💜💜Not Today is inspired by one of the famous quotes by Martin Luther King Jr., “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” It's all about fighting authority and "breaking the glass ceiling." Its 2017 releases coincided with civil unrest in South Korea as a response to governmental corruption. RM confirmed as much when asked about the song by the Korea Herald. "I wrote the lyrics for BTS so we do not stay silent against social issues and injustice and continue to solve it and raise problem," he said. "We talk about social issues, read books and meet with experts and ponder together. We still have a long way to go, but we will think hard and embrace criticism." The lyrics of "Not Today" speak of overcoming obstacles and keep fighting, while instilling hope in oneself. In the opening lyrics, RM calls out to "all the underdogs in the world." It discusses the theme of anti-establishment that was featured in their previous singles "No More Dream" and "N.O.", through lines like, "A day may come when we lose/ But it is not today/ Today we fight!" During the chorus, the band speak of rallying against injustice, corruption and irrationality; "Don’t kneel, don’t cry, raise your hands Not not today." The line, "Break the glass ceiling that cages you" references the idea of breaking all invisible barriers that stop people from succeeding. The lyrics addressed social and political issues (they are trying to rally the youth and let them know life is worth fighting for, possibly in response to the extremely high rates of youth suicide in their country from a generation that feels lost, unempowered and desperate.)💜💜

Crow-tit is a tiny bird. Baepsae = Crow-tit (name of the bird) Baepsae = underdog (meaning in lyrics and Korean culture) The meaning of this bird and underdog meaning is a lot deeper than I can explain here. The only thing I don’t like about Not Today is Jin’s absence in the song and music video (If you blink you would literally miss him). If this was someone’s first BTS video they wouldn’t have known there were actually 7 members.

"Not Today" is a famous Shakespearean phrase from Henry V. He uses it in soliloquy to troops before battle. I can't say that was what RM was going for but it does fit the battle motif in the video. (Highly recommend Kenneth Branagh's version from film Henry V).

Jonghyun was really the president of the Taemin Fan Club 😂 First time they met Jonghyun was 15 and Taemin 12, they were living together as trainees in Super Junior dorms. Jonghyun was his brother, friend, mom, etc ... He was immensely proud of Taemin, who he considered his muse, his inspiration when writing songs ☺️ Jonghyun was also his vocal tutor in their early years (together with Onew), and you can hear it in Taemin's singing ☺️
