he's actually playing the harmonica solo on a synth, even though he could've played it on a harmonica. digital sampling was still pretty new so it was a fun experiment for him back then to try to make it sound real.
Chaka Khan this was a jam back in the day. If you didn't know the song was written by Prince and that is Stevie Wonder playing the harmonica on this song!
I think Chaka Khan is mainly known as the queen of funk. She fronted the band Rufus in the 70s. This Prince cover was a bit of a comeback for her. She’s mean drummer too, not a lot of people know that.
This song WAS and still IS 🔥! Chaka started out in a group named Rufus - they were a pop/funk band. Then she split off and was disco/pop and had a whole string of hits. FWIW - that harmonica solo was Stevie Wonder!
This is just a fun song. I remember when this song was played in the clubs back in the day, I'd have to dance to it. The whole dance floor was full of people. Great times
This takes me right back to the dance clubs in the 80s !! Awesome reaction to a great dance song !! It is hard to not shimmy your shoulders to this one !
When Prince writes the song, Stevie Wonder plays his harmonica, and Chaka Khan kills the vocals, you get this. Stone cold classic. That's a goofy a*s video though.
This was a song originally released by Prince a few years before on his 2nd self-titled album 1979. He never released it as a single though. Chaka Khan redid it and changed the arrangement. It was a huge hit for her, maybe her biggest hit, but not 💯 sure.
Its a great version, better than the original, but I would not really call that a different musical arrangement at all; the instrumentation is updated, for certain, but the actual arrangement is pretty much identical to Prince's original, in my opinion.
Rufus and Chaka's first hit 'Tell Me Something Good' came out in '74 and their music from the 70s is straight funk/R&B/soul music. I was 15 then and Chaka is my all time favorite female vocalist PERIOD! I'm going to see her in March at the MGM casino/hotel in Maryland. I cannot wait!! Please don't sleep on her music.
Chaka started out in funk with the band Rufus. One of my favorite songs from that era of her career is "sweet thing". She's definitely in the R&B mold and could really belt it out with awesome singing. She also recorded the original version of "I'm Every Woman" which was popularized by Whitney Houston. I happened to listen to Chaka's last single which was released in 2022 called "Woman Like Me". She's still got great pipes.
as soon as I saw the name of the song I knew the BJ jive would be in operation with this reaction and I wasn’t disappointed although BJ you never got out of 1st gear, you gave a starter but I was waiting for the main LOL.
I love Chaka Khan ! I've been listening to her since the early 80's , And you guys are 100% correct about her voice , It's next level quality , I always knew it , But when I heard her song "Through the fire" Well let's just that cemented the deal !
As stated below, Chaka started out in the early/mid 70's more in the Funk/R&B genre with Rufus. This song was sort of a departure for her as there were some hip hop street elements to this song. Purportedly she was not happy with doing a popular/hip-hop type of song at the time but this song was very big at the time.
Wow this brings back memories! I saw Chaka Khan in concert in the mid-80s with Wham and Katrina and the waves at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Chaka Khan was amazing and her hair was so big and purple I couldn't understand how she held her head up. Haha.
Love this ! It always reminds me of my band days during the 80s when this song came out and when my band would be on break the dj always cranked up the jams for people to dance to and this was one of the favorites that would pack the floor. It would even make me get up and dance LOL... You really got to hear this in a club with a huge Soundsystem !
Love this song..! I first heard "Ain't Nobody" back in the 80's movie Breakin'... That's JAM too...! And "Tell Me Something Good" is a all time Classic...!
Loved listening and groovin to Chaka Khan back in the day. Not gonna lie, I had a crush on her too. She's still fire to this day. BJ's right, she's a Queen, gotta put some respect on her name.
Although Chaka Khan first came to prominence in the mid-1970s singing funk/soul with the band Rufus, she is a versatile singer and master of several genres including pop, soul, R&B, funk, and jazz. Chaka Khan showed her mastery of jazz on her 1982 album entitled "Echoes of an Era." Sometimes on her pop/R&B albums she would include one track that was a jazz/standard ballad. On her 1988 album "C.K." Chaka Khan covered the song "The End of a Love Affair" made famous by Billie Holiday on the album "Lady in Satin". She also sang the jazz/standard ballad "My Funny Valentine" on the soundtrack of the 1995 movie "Waiting to Exhale." In 2004, Chaka Khan released the album "ClassiKhan" featuring jazz, pop, broadway, film score, and country standards such as "Stormy Weather", "Hazel's Hips", "Round Midnight", "Teach Me Tonight", "Hey Big Spender", "Is That All There Is?", "Crazy", "To Sir With Love", "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever". Yes, Chaka Khan will always be the nonpareil Queen of Funk, but she is always a welcome royal visitor to other musical genres. For those interested, here is some information on Chaka Khan from Wikipedia: Her career has spanned more than five decades, beginning in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk band Rufus. Known as the "Queen of Funk", Khan was the first R&B artist to have a crossover hit featuring a rapper, with "I Feel for You" in 1984. Khan has won ten Grammy Awards and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide. In 1969, Chaka Khan started performing in small groups around the Chicago area, first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe. She was asked to replace Baby Huey of Baby Huey & the Babysitters after Huey's death in 1970. The group disbanded a year later. While performing in local bands in 1972, Khan was spotted by two members of a new group called Rufus and soon won her position in the group. The group caught the attention of musician Ike Turner who flew them out to Los Angeles to record at his studio Bolic Sound in Inglewood, California. Turner wanted Khan to become an Ikette; she declined stating she was "really happy with Rufus. But Ike's attention was certainly a boost." In 1973, Rufus signed with ABC Records and released their eponymous debut album. Despite their fiery rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Maybe Your Baby" from Wonder's acclaimed "Talking Book" and the modest success of the Chaka-led ballad "Whoever's Thrilling You (Is Killing Me)", the album failed to gain attention. That changed when Wonder himself collaborated with the group on a song he had written for Khan. That song, "Tell Me Something Good", became the group's breakthrough hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, later winning the group their first Grammy Award.
If you love Chaka , you must check out the band Rufus. The song I would recommend would be “ tell me something good “. Old school always warms my heart.
This is a cover of a 1979 Prince song of the same name. Chaka Khan made a music video for this song as well... Melle Mel on the Rap, Stevie Wonder on the Harmonica.
Written by the late Prince, RIP. Harmonic sample from Fingertips, written by Stevie Wonder. Rap by Melle Mell. The needle drop was thought to be a mistake! 😖 But the producer decided to keep it! This decision made this cover more popular than the original!🤯 Suggested next video 📹 Chaka Khan sings Through the Fire 🔥.

Chaka has always been one of my favorite artist. There is an official video version for this song. Not sure if it was blocked but suggest you guys watch it. Has a few of the breakdancer that were hot back in the day in it which makes it even better.
