FIRST TIME Hearing "Dark Chest of Wonders": NIGHTWISH Reaction!! 

Most of the 82,000+ people there had never seen Floor with Nightwish. Hell of a way to introduce them to the Goddess.

Tuomas writes all his songs and composes everything on his keyboard. When he thinks it’s at 100% finished (in his mind) he then takes it to the band to “enhance it with their instruments”. A long process that results in Nightwish Magic! 🎹 🥁 🎸 🎸 🎤 🎵 🪄 🎶

The organ of doom is inspired by the Sibelius monument in Helsinki.

This is how you open a show

This was Floor's 'first exposure' as Nightwish's lead singer to a big audience in Europe. This song (curtain raiser) being the first! What a joy!

A happy song perhaps? Nightwish - Alpenglow, live in Mexico City. Emppus guitar riff is cool in that one.

🤘😎🤘 Cool Reaction. I first heard this song in 2004. Tarja is the original vocalist on this song. We seen them perform this song live with Tarja, in 2005, and they kicked butt. We seen them perform this song with Annette on vocals, in 2008, and it was okay. We seen them perform this song with Floor in 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2022. So Good!!!

That showopener was Floors "baptism by fire" to the big European nightwish fanbase, for shure there were some shows on the continent before Wacken but only for a 3 to 5k audiance.. Nightwish was the end of the whole festival,,and Floor.... She was superb. She not only took the spectators in the palm of her hand from this first Song on, she closed her hand, held... and she only opened it after the end the show closer " Last ride of the day".

You're right , Nightwish doesn't write bad parts. lol Yep, that is how you open a show. 🤘🤘 First time most in this crowd in Germany had seen Floor sing with Nightwish. I believe we already told you she had only been with the band about 10 months here, most of that time was in North and South America. Song #2 at this show was Wish I Had an Angel, and the Marko introduced Floor to the crowd. This was also the set opener at the 2005 Helsinki show (End of an Era DVD) with Tarja.

Nightwish are a band favoured by the voice coach/teacher type reactors, for good reason considering they have 4 world class singers in their history. what you dont see much of is the breakdowns from a musical/technical PoV, and you provide that. great reaction :). looking forward to you reaching 'the big three', Endless Forms Most Beautiful, Poet and the Pendulum & The Greatest Show on Earth.

The album "Once" on which this track appeared, spawned the promotional tour "Once Upon a Century". Of the 129 concerts in the tour, 126 opened with Dark Chest of Wonders. Then it appeared again in the Imaginaerum tour, which speaks to how well-received it was. I'm pleased to see someone pointing out thd different ways in which Tuonas uses the keys part.

And the rest of the concert was perfect! Literally magical - cannot imagine actually being there. This is a song that makes me crank the volume and drive fast. I cannot listen to it in the car lol Emppu has done a great job of adding excellent riffs, bridges, and flare, while keeping the songs pumping along. I swear other bands with complicated music will have 2 or even 3 guitarists. Emppu carries it all himself. Needs big credit.

They are all so good, song writing, musicians, singer's and nobody can open a show like they can old rock and roller fan here seen the best and this group is right up there with the best God bless

Very good Mr. MMR ! Now, I know you don't do lyrics much but Tuomas is a master at that too, I think we have explained Tuomas' pseudonyms, especially "boy", so what have you here ? The dark chest he found as a very small child in his grandparents attic, in it were all manner of books and toys that took his imagination off to many wondrous and fabulous places, he's writing about these imaginary journeys as a child, "seen through the eyes of one with a pure heart", which Floor sings in a high head voice as you might hear from an excited small child. Know that and all the story of the lyrics fall into place. For me, the unravelling of his poetic and metaphoric lyrics is like a second bite of the cherry, your mileage might vary; nothing wrong whatsoever with that of course. I like your digging into the music, very interesting.

You've got an amazing ear to pick up the guitar riffs and sounds, and appreciating the talent Emppu has for driving the song. And I had a good laugh, when you said that the transition felt weird. Because I knew you got carried away while listening to the guitar, and while the rest of the band made the transition. Thanks for your reaction, it's great to see people really enjoying music. No matter what band or what style it is, when you're having fun, it's enjoyable to watch and listen to your opinions.

Great reaction; speaking of moods and feelings: have you heard ‘Dead boys poem’ already?

I learned this song on bass when "Once" first came out. I was in a band - sort of - that intended to cover Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, Within Temptation, more or less all of the symphonic metal bands of that era, and then once we gelled we were going to begin writing originals. We had a fantastic keyboardist I've known since high school, a great jazz/metal drummer I've known since middle school, and a singer I met at college who looked and sang like she could be Tarja and/or Floor's sister. Then we tried to actually get together and practice, and that's when all the plans fell apart. Between people taking classes, two people getting married and going on honeymoon, two of us living an hour away from the other three, etc. it just never came together. Hearing this song always brings me back to that time and makes me smile even though there was a lot of frustration and dashed expectations involved.

To think, none of the songs from this concert were actually written *for* Floor, yet she owned them all after this show.

At first, it's easy to get swept up by the vocals and be utterly blown away. Tarja, Anette, Floor, and of course Marco and Troy too. The band is top notch, all the way through and always has been. But when you scrape away the many layers of awesomeness, the obvious stuff, you discover the true genius factor of Nightwish, which is Tuomas' compositions. Put it altogether and you have the world's greatest band, IMHO.

Another geeky composition trick, notice the turn around the last time the line "open the chest once more" is sung. Every time before, it resolves in a minor chord, only then, at the last time , they resolve it to the major chord. Nice application of the Picardy third right there :)

this is how to open a show, for real ... but, they can top that, for sure ;) Wembley 2015 is my favorit, or similar to "Decades" Tour opening and be excited how they close this concert, this evening, and the whole festival ... "Last Ride of the Day", the last song from wacken 2013 ...

First track on my copy of the "Once" CD by v2004 Nightwish. Great opener back then too! Great album. Probably more commercial than those albums before and after. Contains "Wish I Had An Angel" and "Ghost Love Score"... hindsight makes me think Tuomas saw the events of "End of An Era", going by the lyrics, but could not avoid it... like watching a train wreck or a plane crash, you don't want to see it but you can't look away.... another request for Nightwish's "Crowless" I think you'll like the guitars!!!

The first three albums have more fun guitar moments I think, leaning more towards power metal than the later albums :) wanderlust, tutankhamen and gethsemane to name a few ^^

My ears separate out the instruments then weave them back together. It takes me a couple listens to catch everything bc I often geek out on one little thing/sound/lyric. It's not only the keys that create an almost, extra, vocal-sounding line...I find Emppu's playing often sings, as well! Love your guitar recognition...ever consider choosing a song and giving us a note by note breakdown that you PLAY for us? Would make a cool video!

Therion, Nightwish and Rammstein are the clear alphas in todays music.
