FIRST TIME HEARING DAVID BOWIE-Heroes REACTION 

Hey Scribe! David Bowie was from the future... everyone else had to catch up to him! (5+ decades of musical genius)

There's an iconic photo of East German soldier giveing flowers to his West German Girl friend thru the barb wire. So nothing can keep them apart ❤️ conquers all.

He was doing in the 70's what they can't do today, 50 years ahead of his time.

Think how this sounded on the radio in 1977....Bowie was soooooo far ahead of everything....

Wonderful to hear him thru your ears. He was just brilliant. Keep in mind, these trippy guitar and synthesizer effects are trademarks of the 80’s. This is Bowie, Fripp and Eno inventing those sounds in the 70’s. Please do more Bowie! He transcends genre.

You're one of the few reaction video hosts that has a musician's sensibilities. I love how you're always pointing out the coolest little parts in the mix. (this song predates the term alternative by about a decade or more).

Written while Bowie was living in Berlin, and a wall separated the city that reinforced the separation of the country of Germany at that time. Soldiers were instructed to shoot at people who tried to approach the wall (the guns shot above our heads). Years later, one of the incidents that precipitated the tearing down of the Berlin Wall was a David Bowie concert on the western side of the wall that drew a crowd on the eastern side that was too large and by then that the soldiers had no will to disperse. Mass gatherings only grew from there until the wall came down. This isn't to say that Bowie's concert was THE catalyst, but was one of many. It also goes to show how powerful music and song can be when they can topple governments. As Woody Guthrie said, "This machine kills fascism."

Being an avid Bowie fan from an early age (you inherit your brothers tastes) I bought the album the day it was released. Rushed home, headphones on....I cried...such brilliance

I am so glad to see the youth of today take in the one of a kind talent of Bowie. To appreciate this song is to watch the Visconti making of heroes video. There is so much going on here. Thumbs up kiddo, You brought a smile to my face!

Robert Fripp on that watery high liquid guitar at the top end running through the song. The sheer DESPERATION on Bowie's voice when he starts to go up on those verses. And the SHAME/was on the other side!!!

Robert Fripp of King Crimson developed the guitar sound you hear throughout this song. It's called the Frippertronics technique. Few guitarists have successfully emulated it. However, Fripp wasn't certain what Bowie was looking for. So, he recorded three different guitar tracks that were mixed together to create the aural landscape of guitar that became so memorable & classic on this cut.

I still tear up when I listen to this. I'll never forget his Reality Tour show (3 hours), where he did "I'm afraid of Americans", and then said "and the flipside..." and did Heroes. Especially giving how much trouble our country is in right now, well.... you know.

The guitar player is Robert Fripp former member of King Crimson, on keyboards Brian Eno. Bowie moved to Berlin and made two (three)fantastic albums there.....Heroes, Low and Lodger

This song was composed when Berlin was divided by a wall separating people from the others and the history of this song talks about two people who were separated. So it looks like he screams a few times like he's crying out.

David heard a lot of different sounds in his head leaking from the ether, and was determined to follow wherever they led! Check out Young Americans album, straight up, in the pocked old school soul! Check out NEVER NO TURNING BACK. HO-LY-CRAP.... The vocals are as badass as anything every recorded in rock/popular music! Layered and off-timed and bold & beautiful! (Other genre busters: Joe Jackson started post-punk/new wave went New York jazz, then swing jazz, then wherever the hell he wanted LOL! Also TALK TALK. They went from well crafted new wave, to killer acid jazz making great use of empty spaces & silence. Totally non-commercial by their final album!)

This song found new significance following the 9/11 attacks on the WTC. When you can check out The Concert for New York City, October 20, 2001 at MSG, featuring The Who, Billy Joel, and David Bowie among many others. Bowie dedicated "Heroes" to his local ladder company.

The thing is Bowie reinvented himself even every few years. His music also changed accordingly. I do believe this was his “Glam Rock” period. He also had quite a few iterations of band members, however I think his band on the Reality tour was the best as far as being super tight. It’s too damn bad you didn’t get to see him. By keeping his memory alive you pay him the ultimate compliment one musician can give another.

Also check out some more of Robert's wicked guitar sounds on FASHION from David's SCARY MONSTER'S album (but listen to the whole song rather than watch the original video, which is shortened for TV audiences for some reason) and then there's LET'S DANCE (Also shortened on MTV original vid. A very good video, but it leaves out some stellar guitar work by Stevie Ray Vaughn). 🎶👍✋🎻💕

The version of this song at the end of the movie Lone Survivor, while they show the photos of the actual soldiers, is abosultly chilling.

This is that : Early morning camping vibe. You wake up and kick the fire alive to make coffee. Watch the sun part the fog ,and fill the campsite with gold. You look back at the tent to see your sweetie ,asleep ,smiling and serene. The rest of everything ceases to matter for a few moments.

Heroes changed my world in 78! I was 11

This song is about Tony Visconti, David's producer, going to meet a girl under a gun turret attached to the Berlin Wall. David saw them out a studio window and wrote the song quickly. The screaming in the chorus used a special technique where 3 microphones were placed at different distances and wouldn't activate unless David got louder and more intense. It's a really unique and innovative song. I think you'd really dig the song Quicksand.

Bowie 'invented' alternative!

When you hear that song in the movie "Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" it is even more intense. Love also here the playing of Robert Fripp.

Absolute perfection, everything you could want in a song. How he could carry on after making this is a testament to his talent.

Try doing a session of the Wallflowers "Heroes" song. I think it is the best version of that song by D. Bowie.

When they were recording this song, they had Bowie in this big warehouse sized building. You'll hear a lot of great reverb in this song because they set up three microphones at different distances across the space. So when David would sing louder, the further mics would pick him up and create that amazing splash of sound.

Hey Music Maiden; David does this w/ Mott the Hoople during the "Freddy/AIDS" concert in 91 or 92, & performs w/ the remaining members of Queen, the version of Pressure,that got stiched together w/ Queen at Wembley. I recommend that U do a reaction to all of that show, or parts U Like ! FIRE !!!

You can't help but do the backing vocals... The wall he was standing by was the Berlin Wall (torn down before you were born!).

This from his era working with Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, etc. Very much in that vocal style here ...

Take a good look at his eyes. He had Anisocoria. His left iris would not adjust to light, so it gave him an eerie look. One eye blue, the other black. Even without that condition, Bowie was otherworldly. BTW, his song "Lazarus" will bring a tear to your eyes.

If you do nothing else, be sure to look up the story behind this song, which involves the Berlin Wall. Bowie also did this song live at the Concert for 9/11, singing it to the first responders, who were given all the front row seating in Central Park. One Love
