Per Wikipedia this song was born on a tour bus going to Portsmouth in 1971 when a reporter asked the band how they wrote songs. To demonstrate, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and began playing a riff consisting of a single "G" repeated over and over, while vocalist Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. The song was refined and was performed that same night. The song first appears on the 1972 LP Machine Head. The track remains one of the band's staples in live concerts, and was the set opener even before it was released on any album.

The great Jon Lord on keyboards. "He studied classical piano from the age of five, with a local teacher, Frederick Allt, and this focus on a classical grounding to his material was a recurring trademark in his work, both in composition, arranging and his instrumental solos on piano, organ and electronic keyboards. In particular his influences ranged from Johann Sebastian Bach (a constant reference in his music and in his keyboard improvisation) to Medieval popular music and the English tradition of Edward Elgar. He attended Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys between 1952 and 1958 where he gained O Level passes in French, music and mathematics, participated in amateur dramatics and the school choir alongside his organ and piano studies and then worked as a clerk in a solicitor's office for two years."

Yes. Deep Purple "Made in Japan" Released in December 8, 1972, Ian Gillan / Vocals; Ritchie Blackmore / Guitar, Roger Glover / Bass Guitar, Jon Lord / Organ & Ian Paice / Drums. I had this Lp on Vinyl but wore it out, still have the Cassette. Deep Purple kicks the Beat and goes into Overdrive, Some Bands step on the Beat but Deep Purple Kicks it like Ringing a Bell. Pretty tough to Compete with The Drive, Energy and Tempo "Highway Star" Projects Live. Ritchie Blackmore influenced Yngwei Malmsteen to Fuse Classical with Rock, Their "Fireball" Lp left a big impression on Yngwei, Both Guitarists Revere Jimi Hendrix and can hear his Classical influences as well. Ritchie Blackmore used a Pre-Amp from a Reel to Reel between his Fender Stratocaster Guitar and Marshall Amp, He stated in Guitar Player Magazine, "It helps to Smooth off the High Top end and Calms things Down, I find it Difficult to play without it." This Power Tune left alot of Bands in Deep Purple's Wake, left many in their Dust.

This whole album is phenomenal. It came out when I was in junior high school and yeah we played it all the time and it is definitely a great Highway song for sure. Everybody in this band was so talented everybody. And everything in this song was fantastic. That base Line is killer, and surprisingly for this era, it's really easy to pick out because there's such Clarity on it and yet it's still Blends in just the way it should. The drumming is fantastic the singing is amazing John Lord on his organs that he ran through Marshall Stacks or whatever, the guitar playing, the interplay between all the different parts, it's just so solid. And it's fun lyrics on top of it. I bet he had a blast singing that.

My built car was a pickup magnet but it was also a magnet for all kinds of trouble as the police were following me as soon as they saw that car on the street , just waiting for any mistake like stopping to close or too far at a stop sign , going 2 or 3 miles TOO SLOW in a school zone and they ticketed me for impeding the flow of traffic , sticking a penny in my tires to see if I had enough tread , measuring my bumper height , making me open my hood to see if I had an an air cleaner and if I didnt they towed the car as an unsafe vehicle , measuring with a tape measure to see if I was parked an inch too far from the curb and iof course there were those broken parts which cost me more money than I was earning and the gas , that car was getting 4 miles to a gallon ! ouch !

I remember my high school buddy Dave borrowed his brother's black 1970 Nova SS with a 350 LT-1, Muncie 4 speed and 4.11 posi track gears and we went cruising around one Saturday night back around 1974 or 75. A 350 LT1 was 350 cubic inches and 350 horsepower. With 4.11 rear gears that was a _fast_ car! His brother owned "Deep Purple - Machine Head" on 8 track (kind of dating myself here!) from which "Highway Star" is taken, and man we felt like real teenagers with a _real_ hot rod to speed around in! He had a great stereo for the day and we cruised in style and I don't remember anyone wanting to race with that Nova SS! Of course, that was stupid for 16 and 17 year old kids to be driving a car that fast but we didn't get any speeding tickets. Though we did take it out on the highway north of town to see how fast it was in the quarter mile. Somewhere in the 13 or 14 second range, IIRC! If you wanted to go faster you had to go for a big block V8, and those were really expensive and an absolute handful to control when you put the pedal to the metal! 🎸🎸🎸💘😏😎

My first car was a 1972 Plymouth Roadrunner, which I bought in 1977 from a friend. This album, but specifically "Highway Star", was an immediate favourite for driving. Can you imagine? I was a 19 year old guy with 425 Horsepower. This was the kind of music we listened to, as well as Boston, The Jackson 5, The Guess Who, The Beatles (even after they broke up), etc., etc. I loved Disco when Saturday Night Fever came out and I so enjoyed dancing whenever I could. The 70s were such a stress-free and truly independent time. Other than the Vietnam war, which was coming to a close, there was so little to worry about. We lived our lives to work and have a good time. We played as adults and enjoyed our communities and surrounding towns and cities. It's very difficult not to pine for those times, but it is not where we are at present. But, I digress. I can see that you both "get it" about this tune. It's as unbridled a rock song can be, with so many metaphors for life and relationships, especially the "my brain" part, where I think it means we all have personal responsibility for our choices and we should be allowed to choose our lives any which we we desire, mistakes and all. This song drives you to consider yourself as a "Highway Star". It's true, isn't it? Love you guys. : )

Songs like "Stargazer" (epic classic), "Gates of Babylon", "Kill the King", "Man on the Silver Mountain" and their live concert footage from the 1977 Munich concert, songs like "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow" are on a different level.

The Guitarist name is Richie Blackmore. He left the group after the album "Burn" and formed the band Blackmore's Rainbow. Check out "Man on a Silver Mountain". Also check out the sing "Burn" by Deep Purple.

Had this on 8 Track! Band hit(s) really hard when they want too. Still one of the GOATs. And, yeah, 74 Nova lol! Listen to "Lazy." My fav Purple tune. And do a dive on that album. Smoke on the Water is literally the true story of how this was recorded.

Many accomplished guitarist say they cannot duplicate Blackmore’s skill on this tune Blackmore was trained(all the members were I believe) on the classical method and he utilized arpeggios segments to make those sounds The incredibly short segments of “silence” between the strums in an arpeggio method is critical

I had to learn the bass line when I was taking lessons when I was 19, lol. It's still one of my favorite pieces of music.
