FUN FACT: I’m Coming Out was written by CHIC members Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards. They got the idea watching 3 drag queens dressed as Diana at a club called The GG Barnum Room in NYC.
She had no idea what the song was about when she sang it. Someone made a joke about her being a lesbian and she had a meltdown claiming her career would be over. Though in all fairness if people had actually thought that, joking aside, her career probably would have ended. At least her mainstream one.
Today as you know it's the Anthem for the LGBT Community. It was Co Written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards the Co-Founders Of Chic. She was at her peak as a solo artist with other hits like Upside Down which went to Number One. Nile Rodgers is a Legend. In the UK he's worked with Duran Duran (Post Andy Taylor & Roger Taylor) when they left with "Notorious", with David Bowie with "Let's Dance", and one of Chic's Songs "Everybody Dance" was later covered by the Co Ed Group Steps 1996-2001 and Kimberley Walsh formerly of Girls Aloud. She also did a Duet with Westlife (A Irish Boy Band).
Essentially a Chic song with Diana vocals. Check out all Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards, both geniuses. You should listen to Chic’s “Le Freak” and “Good Times”
she's the best. what's not to like about Diana Ross. try Touch Me In the Morning. Theme from Mahogany. Reach Out and Touch. Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Last Time I Saw Him. also with Supremes: Love Child, Back in My Arms Again, You Keep me Hanging on, You Can't Hurry Love
I bet when she made this song she would imagine a whole community would thinking it’s about them. This song will feed her for the rest of her life. Talk about making money moves without trying.
J, You'll Love "Touch Me In The Morning" "Love Hangover" "Do You Know Where You Going To"(theme to Mahogany), "Upside Down" and duet with Lionel Richie "Endless Love"
Hi Jayvee The drummer is propably the late Tony Thompson who was a friend of our family and my Brother Eddie Martinez who was Robert Palmers lead guitarist. Tony Thompson, Bernard Edwards and Nile Rod gers formed the group Chic in the 70's and had to this day the biggest Disco tune of all time named freak out. Those 3 and my brother played gigs in the Bronx as kids before they became successful. My Brother Eddie went the Rock route with Jagger, Rod Stewart, Robert Palmer, Mic Jagger then he played guitar on Run DMC King of rock and rock box. Nile Rogers of Chic to this day is propably the biggest producer other than Quincy Jones and I believe produced this Diana Ross album. All these people I mentioned believe it or not are and were actually some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Diana Ross has a voice sweeter than candy."Upside Down",and "Ain't no mountain high enough""Chain Reaction",written by the BeeGees, just to mention a few.
This song sounds so good with a full system & sub woofer!.... I can't say enough about super producer Nile Rodgers. He's written hits for Madonna, Sister Sledge, Duran Duran & David Bowie to name a few. A true music genius!!!!
Thanks for doing this one. It was an amazing anthem for the LGBTQ+ community, especially at that point, when coming out was still exceedingly difficult to do, if you could do it safely at all. Please react to "Chain Reaction" next. Wasn't a big hit in the US, but it was in Europe. The Bee Gees wrote it and sang on it, and Barry Gibb was a co-producer.
Love Child is one of my favorites! Shows off Diana's voice and gives you insight of what it was like before birth control pills and abortion was an option. 💞✌
Upside Down was always my favorite by her. I used to make my dad play me those 2 songs when I was little. His Diana Ross album was the only music of his I wanted to listen to.
Great song. Made for the dance floor. That anticipation builds and builds, so when the track finally starts properly, the dance floor explodes into life. Love it.
Wow , How love was she involved in the music industry? Did the gay community adopt this as their anthem. I don’t think it was intended to be but it’s a fun & fitting song for it.
Nile Rodgers said that he intended it to be a gay anthem. They just didn't tell Diana that because they feared she wasn't going to record it if she found out..
Nile Rodgers was always one of my favorite record producers. After chic he went on to do many eclectic artists such as Debbie Harry, Thompson Twins, Jeff Beck, Jimmy and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Madonna, two David Bowie albums, and even jazz artists! He made the song Love Shack by the B-52's sound like a perfect pop record. He even produced One of Ric Ocasek solo album from the cars which was one of my favorite record of his. He really can make any artist have rhythm in their songs!
I bet that's really sounding funky in your headphones, yeah, we all loved Diana back with the Supremes and afterward. She was so classy and helped MJ in so many ways in his personal and professional life.
LADY D!!!!! DIVA, DIVA, DIVA.....who has or ever matched her in her solo career. This song is her entrance songs when she does her live performances.....IT IS MIND BLOWING!!! When she went solo on the brain set of Berry Gordy, it was one his greatest moves since he brought in the Jackson 5. One of my best friends does her background vocals, he said she is simply, AWESOME!!! You have to check out some of her other solo hits, "REACH OUT AND TOUCH", AIN'T NK MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH", MUSCLES, duet with Marvin Gaye.....MOTOWN MAGIK!!!!!
Forgot how good this song was. Adding to a playlist right now, great way to start a day. Used to Do some DJ for dances back when I was young, this brought everyone out on the floor.
Brrrr goosebumps, she sang this together with the bandmembers of Chic: Nile Rodgers-Guitar, Bernard Edwards- Bass,Tony Thompson-Drums and the two female singers of the band, great band, GREAT musicians! RIP Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson.
There is rumor that MJ wanted to look like her and that is why he had so much "work" done to his face. Not sure if it's true, but would make sense when you look at that cover photo.
Try “Upside Down”. That was the other single release off the same album. Sounds like electric guitar 🎸 at the beginning of the song instead of acoustic. I agree about the drums on this song. They’re really coming through. I like the way to kick sounds.
Now Rogers is an incredible arranger and producer. You can always recognize his work. His drums are amazing and his rhythm guitar is always incredible. He is produced for everybody. Madonna, David bowie, Duran Duran, Grace Jones, Diana ross, everybody. And his own group Chic is also very big on their own. Btw, Luther Vandross is singing background on this song
I love this Motown Monday’s. It’s cool to see reactions to classic R&B and soul and not just classic rock, but I still like those reactions too. Gotta throw some funk in there too brotha...Funky Friday’s One Way - Cutie Pie Another great solo Diana Ross song is Missing You...This song is dedicated to Marvin Gaye.
Diana was the it woman back in the day!!! You shld also chk out "The Boss" (I believe it was written by Ashford & Simpson, who you shld also chk out, great song writers) This is a really positive song, I love it!!! Your energy is so infectious😁!!!
Try Lauryn Hill: 1 - Lost ones 2 - Doo Wop (That thing) 3 - Everything is everything And Estelle: 1 - No Substitute Love Erykah Badu: 1 - On & On 2 - Appletree Janelle Monáe: 1 - Locked Inside Guru: 1 - No Time to Play
Diana Ross was the Best among Berry Gordy's Motown many Greats; multi-talented, as a "Supreme" Actress (Lady Sings the Blues/Billie Holiday story 1972 Academy Awards nomination) I thought she was robbed! lol My first concert, as young High schooler. She was thin as a rail, but beautiful, inside and out, as seen transparently, through song and carriage~
I will always come out for Diana 💯💗 You should listen to her cover Billie Holiday (from the movie she starred in called Lady Sings The Blues). So stunning.
So glad u decided to check her solo songs out, cuz she got a lot of great ones. Please check out "Do You Know Where You're Going To". The video version w/her in a shiny red outfit IS ABSOLUTELY GREAT! "Missing You" is another really great one from her. The video version on that one is great, too.
Diana was also the one who brought The Jackson 5 to everyone's attention. She had them on her special , heavily promoted them and she really took Michael under her wing.
Um it was Suzanne DePasse that discovered the Jackson % and Barry Gordy signed them to Motown. As a way to promote them they used the idea Diana Ross discovered them but that was not the case.
@@guywill7875 Exactly right. But the public didn't know Suzanne and she didn't have tv specials and appear on tv shows. So the way they were brought to the attention of the public was Diana Ross
Sounds like you need to watch some Superfruit music videos. An updated take on all those dance genres from the past. You could start with Guy.exe, it's the funkiest and also the funniest.
I remember this coming out. I liked it. It took a while but I did grow to love it. Always thought for an older lady the album cover was pretty hot... and then when she did her central park concert in the rain... lets just say there was wettness across the country.... thanks for your reaction... not much different then people back then...
I first heard this song at my best friends house when I was a kid living in Wilmington Del. My friends mom idolized Diana Ross, because she favored her a lot and her name was Diana as well. This was a huge brake out song back then. I miss my best friend this song brings back the memories. 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤
Diana Ross' must hear solo hits: "AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH" (The 6 + Minute Version); "LOVE HANGOVER" (The 7 1/2 Minute Version); "THEME FROM MAHOGANY (Do You Know Where You're Going To)"; "THE BOSS"; "UPSIDE DOWN"; "CHAIN REACTION"; "TOO SHY TO SAY"; "SUMMERTIME"; The Opening to her 1979 Las Vegas Caesar's Palace Show (here on RU-vid); her 1980 live version of "REACH OUT AND TOUCH (Somebody's Hand)" singing to the troops on a Bob Hope Special; her duet with Lionel Richie, "ENDLESS LOVE"; her live version of "FOREVER YOUNG" from the 1980's Jerry Lewis Telethon; her appearances on THE MUPPET SHOW and SESAME STREET; Her CENTRAL PARK CONCERT Opening from 1983.
