The difference between WH and Dolly Parton is with WH i get goosebumps, but with Dolly Parton i get tears in my eyes, because it is so freaking humble, so sweet and from the heart. With WH its all about a powerfull voice control, one of the greatest singers, but knowing its original you know WH sangs it completely wrong. This song is about being humble, being small, give your beloved the way out to find a new love. And she really did mean that.
Mark i love your analysis of this song 100% spot on. Whitney did an amazing job with it. However you are right about this songs humility it is soft and humble. A gentle goodbye to an old friend who she loved dearly. This is my favorite version just effortless so natural less forced. And i do love Whitney her dance hits as well as her own ballads. I just feel the original by Dolly who i also love. Hits closer to your soul love your comment. Aloha from Hawaii 🌺🍹🌺🌺🍹
Dolly Parton makes it a personal relationship. She is singing just for you. Angelic voice just for you. She is unmatched. She loves you, unconditionally when she sings for you.
Dolly wrote the song to the guy who sat with her at the end of the video. His name is Porter Wagner and she was leaving his show after many years. He didn’t want her to go so she wrote the song to show him how serious she was about leaving. Dolly is a world treasure. She’s written more than 3000 songs and is still writing. She wrote this song and Jolene the same day. You need to react to Jolene.
Just to correct a little misunderstanding that's going around. Dolly isn't sure if she wrote Jolene & I Will Always Love You the same day. Just that they were on the same tape, so were written very close together, POSSIBLY even the same day.
Porter was pretty nasty to her after she left. But, true to her word, she always loved him. When he was forced to sell the rights to all of his music, she bought the entire catalog. Once he was back on his feet, she gave it all back to him as a gift. When he was dying, she sat beside him and sang to him.
The purity, honesty, truth and emotion in Dolly's monumental voice, along with her power lungs and vocal range all complimented each other her entire career...she is a LEGEND!
Just wanted to let you know. Porter Wagner was not Dolly's boyfriend. Both were married. Dolly loved Porter as a friend, boss, singing partner and record producer. After leaving his show, Porter sued Dolly over their contract, songs/record rights etc. Their last album together did not get released until 1980. Porter remained mad & won't talk to Dolly for many yrs. They(Porter) became friends again (l think in the 90s). It was great to see them on tv, talking & singing together again on special occasions. Ck out some of their songs together as no reacts to their songs. A few are, "If Teardrops Were Pennies" "Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man", "Holding On To Nothing", "Please Dont Stop Loving Me" These are just a few of their songs together. Here's a couple written by Dolly. "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning", "The Bargin Store", "Down From Dover", You'll need tissues for this one. And then chills for your soul, "He's Alive". Sorry this is so long.
Later in life when porter was hard up for cash she bought the rights to all the songs he owned from him and then immediately gifted them back to him. She is a true saint and truly an American treasure ❤️
Dolly Parton is a true class act. So many wonderful things about her. Too much to write here. To all you young people, you should look up her biographies, she is a powerhouse.
The man you saw on the clip you played was big name talent when this unfolded. He brought her to the public, and she actually made his program more popular and his name more popular. She desired to sing and tour on her own, but that would never happen as long as she was in contract with the man. They talked of going separate ways and agreed that she should go her own way. She knew that her leaving was going to be risky and also personally painful. She prayed and prayed asking God to direct her path, and to give her something tangible to hold onto through the separation of singing and being a part of the Porter Waggoner Show. After much Prayer and Personal soul searching. she said God gave her the thought and Words to this song, the rest shall we say is History.
"I Will Always Love You" is a song written and originally recorded in 1973 by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton.[1] Her country version of the track was released in 1974 as a single and was written as a farewell to her former business partner and mentor of seven years, Porter Wagoner, following Parton's decision to leave The Porter Wagoner Show and pursue a solo career.
I'm a white american country boy , and it warms my heart to see a beautiful nigerian woman like you discovering the music of Dolly Parton - you're right my darling : you are my favorite nigerian girl .
The song ends the movie "Greatest Little Whorehouse in Texas" -- the Chicken Ranch. Dolly plays the madam and Burt Reynolds is the sheriff who lets the place stay open and loves Dolly. In the movie the Chicken Ranch ends up getting closed and Reynolds is getting set to head for brighter fields. Dolly sings this song and Burt says "oh, the hell with it. Get in the car" -- and they drive off.
You should react to Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton. It's a beautiful true story of her life. Very few can relate to being so poor that your mom makes you a coat from a box of donated rags. She is humble, sweet, wicked smart, and so beautiful.
Dolly’s version always sounds more sad - they will never see each other again Whitney’s version always sounds more hopeful - we will meet again some day. If that makes sense
rileyandmike. Yes!!! I feel the same exact way! When I first heard Dolly perform it I was a kid but I got tears in my eyes. When I heard Whitney perform it, I got goosebumps! However, it DID seem more hopeful! So much so that I was looking for a Bodyguard II where they got reunited!!! 😄
I love Dolly Parton. I love her singing. Her films. Just her personality in general. She is very personal, warm, and funny. A very talented woman. Great business person. Just an amazingly smart individual! Love you Dolly😊 💖🌞 The Flower 🌹
Porter Wagner was the man who was standing with her. He started her career. She was in love with him, but he wasn't good to her. So.... She wrote this song as a way of telling him goodbye.
Dolly has repeatedly said she was never romantically interested in Porter, they were never involved & those were rumors started by small minded gossips, who couldn't understand how she could be the only woman, working in a group of men, & there not be "something" going on.
Absolutely love your reactions!....If you are prepared to stumple into a massive rabbithole you should try to react to the swedish super group Abba. I grew up in the 70's and even though I'm a metalhead through and through Abba always strikes a chord deep within me..."Knowing Me, Knowing You" would be a good song to start out on
Mz Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagner, she's leaving after such a long time...history now. You would love Coat of Many Colors and Jolene-her Goddaughter Myley Cyrus covers it too.
I remember Dolly the money she got from records of song after Whitney made very popular it-actually earned Dolly absurdly amount of money that huge chunk of it lot of money Dolly donated to help black community.
She wrote that song when. Left Portal Wagner Show because he gave her start when she left the mountains of Tennessee. To let she cared. To further her career.
The gentleman that sat down next to her is who she wrote it to. She was leaving his show. He had given her a great start in the industry but she was ready to move on, and man did she move on.
Dolly wrote this song and her singing of it is very sentimental and soft. Love it by her. Whitney Houston's voice is so powerful, almost too strong. She belted out song. I like Dolly's voice, her sincerity better, soft but also strong. A good balance.
I am so glad you reacted to Dolly’s version. I love it. I am not sure if I prefer it over Whitney’s version. It would be nice to see you react to Dolly Parton’s songs “9 to 5”, “Islands in the Stream”, and “Jolene”. Love you ❤️
Dolly is both writer & owner. A writer automatically owns a song (& their name will always show as writer), but if they sell the Publishing Rights, they no longer own the song. Whoever owns those rights is the one who gets future royalties. Dolly didn’t sell her rights, so she makes money from any version or use (re-records, TV, movies, etc). Dolly’s joked that she doesn’t mind if Whitney gets the credit (for IWALY), as long as she (Dolly) keeps getting the checks.
I looked for a reaction to Whitney Huston's cover, but didn't see any. She gives so much power to this song. Have you listened to Dolly Parton's "Jolene" yet? Great song also.
Whitney's version is beautiful but Dolly wrote this as a goodbye to Porter Waggoner because said he wasn't listening to her about leaving the show. That's why she said " I did kinda mean it" .
2020. She was singing it to that man Porter Waggoner. Her boss, her producer her boyfriend, as a Good Bye song to him as she leaves that man. Really heart felt....😎🙏
Porter Wagoner was not Dolly's boyfriend. She has repeatedly said they were never involved & those were rumors started by small minded gossips, who just couldn't understand how she could be the only woman, working with a group of men, & there not be "something" going on.
I’ve always hated Keanu Reeves but I recently learned he buys his stuntmen in every movie a Harley, has paid for college for makeup artist and has donated almost all his earnings.
