Van Gogh was mocked and only sold paintings because his brother Theo paid him for some to try and sell in Theo’s gallery. Now his stuff is worth millions. I think we live Vincent now. Shame no one did when he was alive.

Don had read or was reading Dear Theo by Irving Stone when he wrote this. It's a collection of letters written by Vincent to his brother Theo. Truly a great read.

Look up his paintings online. Van Gough was one of the greatest painter of all time, with over 700 paintings completed in the last 2 years of his life. He only sold one before his death. Now his works bring millions, sometimes hundreds of millions.

This song always makes me cry. As someone that has some serious issues with depression and PTSD, I can't imagine having to deal with mental illness and doctors not knowing enough to really help those that suffered through them in our not so distant past. It must have been hell on earth just judging from some episodes I've had with much better understanding now providing greatly improved treatments now.

The poet/rapper Tupac's favorite song. This is the last song he listened to before he died. This song will only reach and speak to those who let their hearts embrace it. This song is a total masterpiece of art in music. What makes this song great is that it is about a real life artist, Vincent Van Gogh, who had a tortured life plagued by mental illness in a time when no one knew how to deal with it. The only painting he sold was to his brother. This is real life and besides being masterfully written and sung, it is a song for the heart. to understand.

Vincent Van Gogh was Dutch, and one of the most renowned painter-artists of all time, but never got the fame or respect he deserved until after he died. He had bipolar problems in his life and ended up killing himself. At one point in his life the poor guy even cut off his ear. His paintings are epic. This song doesn't resonate until you know his story.

There is amazing animated film, "Loving Vincent," which follows a period of his life. The entire film is animate in individual oil paintings based on his works. It's worth a reaction on its own. @@TeezMcGee

The poetic lyrics you referred to do a beautiful job of describing Vincent van Gogh's artwork, and Mclean does a nifty job of tying one of his most famous paintings "Starry Night" to the night he took his life. That line--along with the "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you"---gets me every single time.

Vincent Van Tough was a Dutch born painter who suffered with depression, mental illnesses, & extreme poverty. At one point he cut off an ear & was confined to a mental institution. From his room he painted his most famous work "Starry Starry Night". He had over 800 paintings & sold 1 to his brother. Born in 1853, took his life in 1890. After his death his paintings became worth $millions. He even has a museum dedicated to his works.

Hey! Thought I left my own unique comment. This is a rare song where the right video enhances the song, especially if you don't know who Vincent was. Like someone said, the lyric video, or another one with a painting on the thumbnail are the way to go. Without the visuals or history, the song hardly makes sense. Happy Sunday Teez!

“Portraits hung in empty halls.” The saddest part of Vincent’s story is that he never knew how famous he would be. He sold one painting to a friend for nothing. He died penniless and alone, and never knew his paintings would sell for millions. He never knew his paintings would be in every school in the world, every library in the world.

One of my favorite songs over the years and one of my favorite artists - Artist Vincent Van Gogh - who died by suicide and struggled with mental health - was not recognised in his lifetime - I went this last year to a Van Gogh exhibition to see his beautiful works - The lyrics reflect all his paintings - if you google his works you will recognise most of his most famous paintings described in the song - after this you should listen again to really appreciate the song - I also have a book of his letters mostly to his brother - he wrote beautifully too and had a beautiful heart
