Please do yourself a favor and find a version of McLean doing this when he was young. The gentleness and softness in his voice at that age goes better with the song. I’ve always loved this song.

It's a problem with so many reaction channels. They tend to look for a live performance, but old/original film/video of songs from the 60s and 70s is rare since film was expensive and no-one thought it important enough to record for posterity. So unless they happened to be on TV and the recording was kept, all we get is these modern performances by long-past-their-best performance-wise artists, still churning out the old hits. Which is great nostalgia for the old time fans, but you have to have heard the original recording first, to know how it 'used to sound' when it was fresh and new, and the artists voices were still in their prime.
@AnnieWarbux

I agree!! It is a great song, in any fashion, because of the Poetry, within. But, Don's Youthful voice and the effortlessness of his performance are what made it a Legend of a song..

He doesn't care because he's a lazy reactor. I unsubscribed but wish I didn't need to. I like his demeanor but I refuse to watch while he butchers the originals with long past their prime live versions of artists performances. If I didn't know better I wouldn't even believe this is Don Mc Clean. There is no excuse for this bullsh*t!! Total fail!

As someone who has suffered through mental illness throughout most of my life, this song has always hit me hard. I love Van Gogh not only for his art but for his story. Beautiful reaction by your side. You were the only reactor who immediately understood the background of this masterpiece. This song hits me in multiple ways, as I suffer from progressive sight loss and Van Gogh is one of my favourite artists. In 2019, just before my eye disease started, I was in St-Remy-de-Provence and visited the places where Vincent lived and painted. I kept listening to this song while observing the landscapes he often portraited. Now, with my eyesight waning each day a little more I can't help to think that I will always be able to see Vincent's painting just by listening to this beautiful Don McLean's song

This is one of my all time favorite songs. When I first heard it as a small child, I found it so beautiful and hauntingly sad, it made me cry. Just the music and Don McLean's vocals (while this live version is very nice, you should really listen to the original recorded version - his voice was much clearer as youth does afford us all, and of the course the production value emphasizes that) as this was before I realized what the lyrics were, what they meant, or that they were in reference to Vincent VanGogh. Who incidentally became one of my favorite artists as well. Once I made the connection between the artists and lyrics, I realized just how truly haunting and sad the song really was. The fact that the music and tone alone had made my toddler self literally weep without any of the context of the lyrics or their subject just amplifies how much I love this song and the brilliance of the songwriter. ❤🎶

I saw a few paintings of his at the Van Gogh Museum in The Netherlands, but sadly I was too young to fully appreciate it. I do now of course. It was also during a time that other artist were experimenting, so while he was not getting through due to his condition, it was also a battle towards his contemporaries who didn't understand the new wave that was i;mpressionism. They were ahead of their time. And for artists experimenting with something new, it's always an uphill battle. Btw, there's a live version from when McLean was younger. It's so much better and sounds even more genuine. You should definitely listen to that one, or the studio version in your own time. - Outstanding reaction!

Don's other tracks you should give a listen to, Castles in the Air and Mountains O'Mourne! A bit of trivia, this was actually one of Tupac's favorites, if not his all time favorite song, his family even played it for him in the hospital just before he died, rip! Since it seems you have an interest in the troubled artist, I encourage you, not only to listen to the original or the live version from the 70's I believe, you'll hardly recognize the voice, it's so different. Also, wanted to encourage you to check out the episode of Doctor Who, called Vincent & the Doctor, actor Tony Curan does a magnificent job portraying Vincent despite the accent. The other thing I wanted to mention is the unbelievably beautiful film, Loving Vincent, it's the first and only 100& oil painting, animated film. It took an international team of 125 artists and 65,000 oil paintings, all painted in Van Gogh's style to create a film that is literally a work of art. There is even a making of documentary for this highly unique and independent passion project.

I am impressed with your knowledge of Van Gogh and his works. You got a lot more out of the song than a lot of other reactors have done. Unlike some other commenters, I don't think the slightly rougher voice McLean has now takes away from the song at all. The beauty for me is in the lyrics, which are poetry. It is one of the most evocative songs I have ever heard. I am maybe a bit biased - Van Gogh is my favorite painter. I love his use of color and bold strokes. I interpret the line "you suffered for your sanity" as that as an artist, Van Gogh saw reality more clearly than others and the result was both great art and mental illness.

I know that you prefer to listen to live versions over original recordings, but I really feel like a first-time listen to a new song, especially an old song like this, should be the original recording of that song before you listen to a live version. Maybe even during the same reaction so you can compare the two. For this song, there is a music video that someone has painstakingly put together alongside actual images of Vincent Van Gogh's art that makes the perfect accompaniment to this song. I recommend going back and watching that video with this song. It's absolutely beautiful.

This might be my favourite reaction to the most beautiful song ever so thank you so much for this. I will return in kind with the strongest possible recommendation that you watch DM perform this song in his younger years - he had the voice of an angel and it is one of the most beautiful things you will ever hear. Thank you again for this.

I just subscribed as I love this song. That said, I have to agree with all others that point to original studio versions as best first experience. I do greatly appreciate live versions by my fellow old farts... but it is due to hearing their talent, though diminished, still there in my memory. But new fans miss just how great they truly were. Long live the greatest era of music from 1966 to 1987 (me from age 7 to 28). 😎

So glad you got to this masterpiece. I'm sure you checked out the studio version by now. There's also an older live from the 70s which is heartbreaking in its beauty

The Official Video showing many of his finest paintings as an ever-changing backdrop was beautiful and I was hoping it would be that video that you would have reacted to. Well worth you looking at in your free time.

Im not sure if you've reacted to either A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum or Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues but those are both wonderful songs that still hold up imo

Procol Harum with the full orchestra when he was in his '70's is also magnificent

I knew you would “ get “ this song. As other mentioned, find an older studio version at some point for yourself . It’s hauntingly beautiful.

Not bad, but better when he was in his prime. Though this song is best experienced rather than considered intellectually. Find his original, or an older, recording and sit back, close your eyes and just listen as it slowly washes over you. Let it paint pictures in your mind.

This was one of Tupac’s favorites. It was playing on a loop while he was in a coma.

This is my favorite Don McLean song. I admire how he can paint VanGogh's work with his words.

This is a shadow of the original recording. This is what it is to "phone it in" once you've retired from the music industry. Don't get me wrong, this song is amazing especially when it was sung as intended back when he could still sing well.

his voice when he was young possessed not just a broader range and clarity, but a haunting quality that he has lost over the years, a quality that added emotional layers to the performance of this song in particular. strongly suggest for your own personal enjoyment to go listen to earlier recordings of this song.

Need to listen to the studio version of this. McLean and his voice have really aged a lot between the studio version and this performance.

The years did not do his voice good. His voice is amazing when he was younger.

Thank you sir... great reaction. Not surprised with your degree that you know van Gogh well. This song is amazing and has always been a favorite. How well written and as such makes the listener wonder what else Don is trying to tell us beyond the artist himself. Don't know if you have ever reacted to "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobby Gentry. Another song that is food for thought.

Its a beautiful song, but as others have indicated it's a bit painful listening to this version for those who know the original.

Very good reaction! For your own personal satisfaction though, you should watch the video of this with the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh-it really brings the song to life~also, Don was younger then and his voice was better.

I love that you have a master's in fine art. Wonderful! I was an art student in college, and obviously wanted to be an artist. That did not happen but Van Gogh was always my favorite. This song is also one of my favorites as well as a movie about Van Gogh. It touches on humanity, creativity, and sensitivity. I'm 71 now and soon to gain another birthday. It reminds me that beauty exists forever. I have a large hand painted copy of "Starry, Starry Night" above my desk as I write this.

I really hope you listened to the stuido version after this. There's a delicate tone to his voice in the original that he can't do at his age now (still fantastic though). "Castles In The Air" is another amazing Dom McLean song.

There's a video that uses Vincent's artwork...makes it all the more lovely. There is also an amazing film called Loving Vincent that I highly recommend. It's like seeing the world through Vincent's eyes.
