A Change of Seasons is a song about the life experiences of drummer Mike Portnoy up to that point. His childhood, the death of his mother in a plane crash (which affected him greatly), growing up, making mistakes, learning lessons, and striving to pass on his philosophy of "seize the day" to his kids when he gets old

When their singer James Labrie sings 'Oh come let us adore him, abuse and then ignore him'. 'No matter what don't let him be, lets feed upon his misery, lets string him up for half the world to see' James is singing about what Mike Portnoy ( drummer & writer of the lyrics for this song) was feeling after the plane crash in his living room when all of these relatives and friends were over telling him how sorry they were and how great his mother was. Mike barley knew them and his mom probably had not spoken to or seen most of them in years. " I'm sick of all you hypocrites, holding me at bay and I dont need your sympathies to get me through the day", that's what Mike was feeling listening to all of their fake sympathies.

I'm pretty sure the fall is referring to the plane that the drummers ( Mike Portnoy's ) mom was on was falling from the sky. His mom died in a plane crash when Mike was in HS. That very day Mike's health teach told the class to seize every day because life is always changing. Before she left for her flight Mike did something he had not done in a long time and told his mom that he loved her. He had remembered what his teacher had told the class earlier in the day. Later that night her plane crashed killing her. When the song starts innocence is portrayed as the song moves along that innocence fades ( A Change of Seasons). For me this is the GREATEST piece of music ever written & performed. Maybe I'm wrong but this is how I interpret this GREAT GREAT song. Thank you once again for your channel and playing this.

So far, the highest accolade DT has is a Grammy nomination. They have won several awards from music publications either as a group or individually, but not a major award such as the Rock and Roll HoF. The closest hall of fame award they have is the Long Island Music Hall of Fame with three of the founding members being residents of Long Island, New York Also, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame awards popular musicians, those that are in the cultural zeitgeist with or without hearing their music. DT is not known to general music fans, and most of their fans are musicians who are deep into their respective instrument, so yeah, tough chance for DT

About the "short set" joke DT concerts are long solo-act shows that last around 3 hours (with a 15 minute intermission). That line is just pure irony on their part since they really take their time and they often play whole albums in just one set. A whole album of theirs lasts about over an hour, average of 70-75 minutes. The first half may consist of fan-favorite songs.
@elBanananas
@elBanananas 3 года назад
Worth noting here: Portnoy collapsed after that show due to exhaustion. This live set was actually really long; a good 187 minutes of playing in total.

There's a RU-vid video of John Petrucci watching Dream Theater covers by youtubers... also, Mike Portnoy himself commented on a DT reactor's video not too long ago, thanking him and saying that his reactionj "made my day". So yeah, they're pretty well tuned into social media. P.S. - John Myung's bass neck has an incrusted moebius ring (symbol of eternity), not a DNA strand. ;)

Baby Phil Collins. I'm sure Mike would be honored. If you like that older rock/progressive rock sound like Kansas, Genesis, etc you really should check out The Big Medley by Dream Theater. They do a medley of a bunch of covers from bands like Genesis, Queen, Kansas, etc. One of their albums has a second disc that is all covers as well as a full cover album.

James LaBrie has solo albums and also shows up in the Ayreon albums. I don't think you've reacted to any Ayreon yet so you'll be in for a treat. The "band" is really the brainchild of one guy Arjen Lucassen who writes everything as a concept album and almost all of the albums are tied together in their own universe. He recruits other musicians and vocalists to perform on his albums. James has been on a few of the albums as well as many other notable rock/metal/prog vocalists you may recognize. I'd definitely recommend the official video for The Day That The World Breaks Down.
@mtaffer

There is also Avantasia which leans more on the hard rock/power metal spectrum but also has multiple vocalists, including the amazing Jorn Lande! I would consider that more rock/metal opera.

If you want the singer to fucc up your mind even more try a live performance of "learning to live" from '91 to '94, or any live performance from that period, he was absurd! Then at the end of '94 he ate some bad shrimp and vomited enough to damage his vocal chords, AND THEN he had to go on a world tour! Props to him for making it through!

A bit of an unfortunate thing about this live album/DVD. The original cover art had a graphic of NYC (and the World Trade Center) on fire. The release date of the 1st edition of this live album to the public...September 11th, 2001 (I'm NOT KIDDING) rightfully so, all unsold copies got recalled for a cover art change (the first edition cover art copies still exist and are now collector's items fetching over $100)

Hi Marvin If you want to do a really long video do the entire 41 minute song Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Haven't seen many tackle the whole song at once. The song chronicles how some people are affected by mental illness . This song has everything from orchestra, ballad, rock and metal and is very well done.
