When i first heard this back in 93 I was like WHAT THE!!!! This song just blew my mind 30 years ago when i was 20 and it still blows my mind today at 50. Dream Theater will make you go through an existential mind trip. Their music will reach down into your soul and pull it inside out. NO KIDDING!! PLEASE!! DO MORE DREAM THEATER! You'll also be blown away by their instrumental side project called Liquid Tension Experiment. John Petrucci the guitar player has two excellent solo albums. Check out The Way Things Fall, Terminal Velocity, and Temple of Circadia.

I was 10 and got the CD because of Pull Me Under. As a young guitar player this song changed everything I knew about music.

Hey SalvoG, let me start by saying this. When I see somebody who doesn't know DT, gets requested to listen to Metropolis I, I usually cringe. Why? Because the track is incredible, but most reactors are not ready for it, and it turns out to be a bad experience. You however, handled it well. You claim it was hard, but in my opinion, you might be a proggy. Congrats. I thank you for your reaction, and hope you explore the DT rabbit hole further. It will be worth it.

This is like Dream Theater OGs or Level Up DT fans. The best starting song is As I Am, Pull Me Under, or The Enemy Inside.

Dream Theater is absolutely the best band still to this day !! I discovered them in 1989 and have been a fanatic ever since !! The best musicians you will ever find !! Their live shows are phenomenal. This is actually the song that leads into their concept album Scenes from a Memory, which I highly recommend !!

Metropolis Pt1 is jumping into the deep end when comes to Dream Theater. It's funny you say sounds like the hardest song on Guitar Hero because it was the hardest Guitar song on Rock Band 4. But this is a perfect example of why commercial success doesn't necessarily indicate how good a song is. This song is hard to monetize because of it's length and very long instrumental section which is not in the 4/4 time signature doesn't appeal to masses, only those with a deep love of actual music. This whole album is full of amazing tracks, Pull Me Under was a commercial success, Another Day shows they can do power ballads, Under a Glass Moon has one of the sickest guitar solos you'll ever hear, Learning to Live is an absolute gem of a song. A Change of Seasons and Octavarium are typically regarded as their best songs, though both are about 23-24 minutes long.

You also cannot forget In The Presence of Enemies Pt 1 and 2 which if you put them together is 25 min long (they cap the begining and end of the album they are on)

Watch a live video, you'll see how they do it. The thing about Dream Theater is that what you hear on the album is EXACTLY note for note what you get live. They are all exceptional musicians. It was fun to watch you try to keep up, though🤣 and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Watch the live 1993 Tokyo performance of "Under a Glass Moon" from this same album. You were blown away by the studio version, you will be absolutely astounded by watching them live.

It's great to see you discovering my favourite band, Dream Theater. I think you will enjoy them because I know you really like Rush, and Dream Theater's guitarist (John Petrucci) and founding drummer (Mike Portnoy) both consider Rush as major influences. They incorporate a wide range of styles from Yes, Rush and Pink Floyd to Metallica. If you listen closely, that first speed run in the instrumental section and the 'videogame' section you backed up to hear again are the guitar and keyboard playing in unison! John is an insanely fast player with impeccable alternate picking technique, but can also be very melodic. Great examples of this to check out are The Count of Tuscany, Hollow Year's (live at Budokan) Breaking All Illusions (check out the live version from 'Breaking the Fourth Wall'), and Octavarium or Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (VERY long songs, live from 'Score'). For a great live version of this song, check out the version from 'Live at Luna Park'. I hope you enjoy going down this rabbit hole!

Oh wow dream theater is a rabbit hole. The drummer Mike Portnoy filled in for the band Avenged Sevenfold on their Nightmare album, after the death of their previous drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan 😢 My favorite Dream Theater song is Change of Seasons. It’s like a 20 minute song and it’s a banger from start to finish. Definitely check it out ASAP you won’t regret it.

The unique sound is they have different instruments simultaneously playing the same notes at the same time but on their pieces. When you see it done live, you are just in awe for hours. No lie, they have been my favorite band for literally 30 years and ive seen them live more times than i know.. easily more than once a year

Dream Theater have always had brilliant musicians even through the few line up changes but can occasionally be accused of ‘overplaying’ making them sometimes difficult for new listeners to grasp. They have never been a radio friendly band and most of their songs exceed 5mins but for audio accessibility but no less brilliant music there are plenty of newbie friendly tracks that nevertheless show off their considerable chops. Check out ‘ Pull me under’, ‘Panic attack’,’ The Count of Tuscany’, On the backs of angels’, ‘Breaking all illusions’, ‘Untethered Angel’, ‘Barstool Warrior’, and ‘The Alien’.

I saw these guys in concert with Iron Maiden. I absolutely love them. "Metropolis II - Scenes from a Memory" is an entire album, and it's my favorite album from them. You can listen to a couple songs on their own, but the album is one story, so it's best to listen to it in it's entirety. Probably not great for a reaction video, but you would probably really dig it just to listen to

Dream Theater is a deep deep rabbit hole. They’re one of my favorite bands ever. It’s cool that you dug this on your first listen. “Pull Me Under” is a must listen, but so are “Take The Time”, “Under a Glass Moon”, and “Another Day” all from the same album. Their third album, Awake, is still my favorite album from them, but I’m solidly behind literally everything by them up until their 2013 self-titled album. Lots to check out by them that will blow your mind. Glad you discovered them. Also, their fifth album is called Scenes From a Memory: Metropolis Part 2. The whole album is based off this one song and it has a very interesting history and story worth digging into. BTW, Metropolis = Meh-TROP-uh-liss not Metro-poliss.

I remember taping this song from the radio back in 1992 and after a couple of listens I was still confused and didn't remember any section from it by heart but I just somehow still liked it and kept on listening. A week or two later they played Pull Me Under in the same radio program and I didn't care for it at all because it was basically 4/4 from start to finish and I had just fallen in love with the complexity of this track😅 Of course I learned to like it after a while and now I WISH they had the balls to open an album with an 8-minute rocker that's in 4/4 without tempo changes.

This was the track that got me into Dream Theater, and this entire album is incredible. Unfortunately, over the intervening years, they got sidetracked - some of their new stuff was amazing, but a lot of it was just wonky shit. I have since gotten steamrolled by a German prog band called Vanden Plas (formed a roughly the same time, but have never had a lineup change). Here's one from a fairly recent album - an absolute epic called "On My Way To Jerusalem". Judge for yourself how their vocals, keys, guitar, and rhythm compare. IMO, they have picked up the prog baton dropped by Dream Theater. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xMELW0DEM7g.html

Check out Part of the Machine by Fates Warning. In an interview with Dream Theater, they attributed Fates Warning as being those who did it first... But Dream Theater went nuts... Fates Warning remained melodic and "for the flow" instead of technicality... Although Fates Warning can hold their own on the Progressive Genre. 💯

I was working at Tower Records Las Vegas In 1989 when a promotional event occurred in store for an AM Stereo Radio Station, The Krusher 1370 AM. One of the reps who worked at the station noticed I was wearing a Rush Moving Pictures Tour Shirt, and he gave this album to me that just ended up at their station on a whim... It was Dream Theater's first album "When Dream And Day Unite". From the very first time I dropped the needle on that album, I knew this band was going places... My hunch was right, and I've been a fan ever since.

No need to try and find a groove to settle into, once they go into their instrumental sections, as you just learned. This was their "listen what we can do!" song from this album. Odd time signatures make for odd head bobbing anyway, lol. But they have styles and tempos to suit all tastes if you explore their music.

First time I’ve heard this….Holy Cow, James Labrie sounds a helluva lot like Dio or Miles Kennedy to me! And Mike Portnoy, the drummer, is definitely top top tier. If Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee ever make music again, I’d nominate Portnoy as one of the drummers to be considered for sure!

If you want to hear someone that really sounds like Dio, check out Symphony "X." Same amazingly gifted players but more with a symphonic element than Dream Theater. I think DT is the far better band because they are way more diverse and the lyrics are more interesting but no one can deny "X" talent and how much the vocalist sounds like Dio.

James sounds great here, but you'd have to have almost no frames of reference to think he sounds even close to Dio. Russell Allan from Symphony X is definitely much closer, and so are hundreds of other metal singers lol

Thanks SG! It's like jumping from Math Concepts to Calc4 without any forewarning! Just to set expectations... The band consists of 4 of the PREMIER Musicians. Period. Full Stop. Mike Portnoy on drums and vocals - busiest musician EVER. Active in 4 bands. In the top 3 drummers for Rock/Metal. Jordan Rudess on Keys - a f-ing wizard on keyboards. I don't think there's an equal. John Myung on bass - without any fanfare, probably top 5. John Petrucci on guitar and vocals - mind bending, sweeping, spectacular, precision. James Labrie on vocals. Good. Very good. Signature sound. You were dropped in the deep end of one of the most complex, polyrhythmic EPICS ever recorded. More than 100 time changes and simply "balls out" from start to finish. Record sales are inadequate to illustrate DT's exceptional LIVE performances and absolute mastery of musicianship and performance. IMO, the best live performances of ANY metal band and the subset of musicians performing as LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT, are without equal.

Very probably the most sophisticated band in recent decades and, therefore, it is difficult for the band to be very popular, since the general public prefers things that are easier to listen to and radio stations, 3 or 4 minute songs. However, they are a great band with extraordinary musicianship from each of its members.

They were formed in Boston because thats were the three founding members met in college. Portnoy the drummer is from Long Beach, Long Island, Myung the Bassists and Petrucci the guitarists are from Kings Park Long Island. They are 100% a Long Island based band as the three founding members all come from and live on Long Island. You should really do them with live videos. Most DT songs are 8+ minutes and they tend to be the shortest 8+ minute songs you ever heard. To me, this is a slightly below average song by them. I mean I love the song. Just saying compared to so many others it's just ok. And "Pull Me Under" is a good "MAINSTREAM" song, the record company made them do to sell albums. I have my favorites of course but they have SO MANY really good songs, it dosn't matter much. Just stay away from the "Astonishing" album. A concept album that most DT fans ask "WTF were they thinking?" LOL. I can certainly understand you never hearing of them before. I always say they are the most talented band you never heard of it. I live within an hour of where most of the members of the band grew up on Long Island and they were out about ten years already before I heard them on a late night radio show driving home from work at 4am around 1998. And even then they were considered the number one prog band in the world. I believe when Portnoy the drummer, cofounder and namer of the group left in 2010 their music generally suffered for it. Portnoy was easily the most flamboyant member of the band and he also did a lot of the behind scenes stuff for them you never see unless youw atch the making of videos. Not talentwise but their songs were less interesting to me overall. Still amazingly intricate but somehow bland. Apparently, he wanted an extended break from DT to do other things and have the band wait for him to come back. With no firm date of when. The other four members wanted nothing to do with that and to the drummers great surprise, replaced him pretty pretty quickly so they could continue on there new album every two year cycle they were on. The new drummer was every bit as talented if not more so but had none of the stage presence or influence on the song writing Portnoy did. I thought it was a complete "dick" move Portnoy pulled at the time but I have to admit, to me they are far better with him than without. But now it has been announced that Portnoy is rejoining the band. Oh, they replaced this keyboardist in the mid 90s with someone that is so far better than this dude, it makes the old guy look like a child. Oh, if you love pure talent, check out a group called Lovebites. They play heavy metal. LOL. Do something live first. I will say no more so you can be surprised.
