First Time Hearing Dreamcatcher | Scream & BEcause Reaction & Lyrics Breakdown 

BEcause is meant to be summer song which in the Kpop industry, it is meant to be fun, cheery and bubbly .... unless the group is Dreamcatcher and it is their take on a "summer" song which is based on a Korean tradition where you tell ghost stories or visit haunted places so that you can feel the "chills" to fight the summer heat. Officially the song unravels a story of an obsession and longing for love. The capitalise BE in the title is used in context as the Hanja character 悲’ (‘BE’) as they sound alike and the word meaning sadness, and the title BEcause could be loosely translate as the cause of sadness, and paired with the line BEcause I like you or BEcause I love you, the sadness is caused by liking or loving someone. Also, the whole creepy toxic vibe is link to the choreography where there is a scene of someone choking another, and the lyrics about "forever mine, even your breath" and then "your face blue...like an ocean view" kind of reflect someone being strangled until the fact turns blue etc. Also, the MV plot theme has another layer that officially borrowed quite a bit of plot elements from the horror movie "Us" by Jordan Peele where doppelgangers who were forced to live underground depraved of the "finer" things and are trying to are trying to take over their "privileged" above ground counterparts...won't go into much details as it would be better if you watch the movie yourself if you haven't). There are a lot of details in the MV that point to this such as the movie "Us" which has scenes depicting a hall of mirror, someone being captured and replaced, the carnival; similarly the choreography also uses the movie themes such as the doppelgangers holding hand in a chain, the slight side to side head tilts, ending pose of the center member which two hand on her face, mirrored choreography etc.. There are also a few easter eggs for the doppelgangers concept such as the MV is 3:13 minute long (coincidence? I think not) , and that the opening scene and ending scene has the members in completely different outfits (with the ending outfit more whimsical), as well as the completely drain symmetrical hourglass at the end indicating that at some point, the doppelgangers replaced their original counterpart. More impressively, musicality, it plays into the theme of opposite doppelgangers where there is a two part chorus (whimsical and cute, and a more rock follow up) and two part bridge (soft vocals followed up by a deep spoken rap with atmospherically vocals behind) trying to show this mirror duality. Also, I love the Pyscho volin homage during the rap part of the song.

They released a new song called Maison two days ago. It’s a super epic song. The structure is very different from their other songs, but the buildup to the third chorus is amazing.

Dreamcatcher's music is produced by Leez and Ollounder (hopefully that's spelled right), who are part of Edenary and also produce some of Ateez's music. They have a fantasy and horror concept I believe. I haven't gotten too deep into them, but they are one of my favorite girl groups.

Your interpretation of the Scream is mostly correct. Basically, the lyrics are reacting a Witch being burned at the stake. However, through hints on the song, they tell you these aren't just what happened to the old witches that were persecuted, it happens today as well, through social media all the time, by "freaks that hide behind a mask" (online avatars) that "witch hunt" just as much on the internet. On the last chorus, they are flipping the tables, rather than allowing the hatred make them scream, they want to make people scream of cheering for them.

in "because" it is intentional, about love being suffocating, it's about the sadness and toxicity in certain relationships, it's a metaphor

No one ever really touches on this; although the doppelganger concept has been explained, it seems like the doppelgangers are attracted by the girls' sadness (rather than being the cause of it) as they can exploit it by telling them they love them and offering to remove their tear stains and guilt to trick them into relinquishing their being. Their intent is to steal their souls and preserve their bodies as perfect "paintings". I see the interaction where the one girl takes the apple from herself (her doppelganger) through the mirror followed by the line, "I don't want to be", as the girls giving in to their doppelgangers, unknowing of the true cost. The shot of the lobby at the end shows the hourglass that was flipped at the start, they've run out of time and the doppelgangers have taken their place.

Again, I don't know much about them so correct me if I'm wrong but if I remember correctly Scream is part of a trilogy (that's why there is a "to be continued"), the following song would be "Boca" and them "Odd Eye", they all follow more or less the same style. This one was a fun reaction, as always, I really enjoyed the lyrics breakdown and the cat snoring haha I'm glad Leslie didn't hate the song, I remember she saying that female voices waren't her thing. Dreamcatcher are very unique. They are the dark angels of Kpop and the only girl group who consistently incorporate Rock and Metal in their title tracks, fusing that with Kpop into something that basically is a new genre. They also are drenched in horror and social criticism, which again is special. Plus, they are massively talented, all of them. And while the girls look like they could rip your spine out when they are on stage, off stage they are adorable crackheads. 😉 Scream is part 1 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is about cyber-bullying, hateful comments and people losing themselves in the (fake) online world. It is mostly showing the victim's perspective of (cyber)bullying, comparing it to a medieval witch hunt and a burning at the stake. The tree is the tree of language, and it grows black fruit for every hurtful thing people say. Note also the hand gesture, it is the devil's horns introduced by Ronnie James Dio as a symbol for metal, but it originally was a gesture in the middle ages to ward off the evil eye, tying into the witch hunt theme. I really enjoy the music, it's rock mixed with EDM. Dreamcatcher are always very creative, and they are in their own genre by this point. In BEcause, they are outdoing themselves once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu (which you should also react to). The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art. I'd highly recommend reacting to their latest comeback "Maison". It's a call to action for saving the world!

Scream is about how words of hatred can hurt people "i dont want to scream" - like screaming cus you cant take it anymore and you're going crazy. BEcause, you got it right, its about toxic/obsessive love. This was a good reaction and interpretations of the songs! May i suggest "BOCA" from dreamcatcher next?

I don’t know if anyone has commented on this yet, but your confusion about the number of members during Scream was actually very perceptive! There are seven, but when Scream was released one member, Handong, was in China participating in an idol competition reality show. Since it was only meant to be a temporary absence, a backup dancer in a mask performed in the group choreography to represent Handong. Which is why you saw seven “members” in some scenes but six in others! Also the witch guess was spot-on for Dreamcatcher lore!! The Nightmare series (their first 6 singles) has a lot of witch imagery, especially the first three MVs: Chase Me, Good Night, and Fly High!

Scream is part of a 3 song series call the Dystopia Series consisting of Scream, Boca and Odd Eye; the series is meant to be a commentary against online hatred, malicious comments, cyber bullying etc. As shown in the beginning, one day people forgot how to say good things.. hence, in Scream, the imagery of an medieval traditional witch hunt (lyrics such as hands bound, stones thrown, burn under the fire etc, and choreography of surrounding someone pointing at a single person) is used to symbolized such online "witch hunt" which take place today where faceless anonymous people (theme of a mask used throughout the series) just post malicious comments and rumors just to hurt people and perhaps watch the world burn. Fun Fact: The devil horn sign (used often in rock music and in the MV) is made popular by James Dio of Black Sabbath. He explained that it was inspired by his grandmother which she used it to ward off the evil eye (which is known in Italy as malocchio) although some anti-rock/metal conservatives twisted it to claim that it is the sign of the devil.

dreamcatcher \:D/ dreamcatcher's lyrics are intentionally abstract to allow the listener to interpret the song by how it makes them feel. however if you take their lyrics within the context of their discography, you will be able to better interpret their intent because there are several main recurring themes conveyed in many of their songs. one is to stay true to yourself despite external pressure or temptation. so while 'because' can at its surface be interpreted as being about obsessive love, it's likely dreamcatcher's true intent is to show a person's internal conflict between good/evil. dreamcatcher often uses pop-culture references to help convey their themes. you picked up on most of them, notably alice in wonderland references in because. so what is alice in wonderland essentially about? a personal searching for her identity in a world where everyone has an identity crisis. you can also hear the iconic psycho screech during the rap verse and of course that movie is about a person with split personality disorder. more recently there are references to the movie us about evil dopplegangers trying to take over their good counterparts. so in this light, 'because I like you' is your dark half telling 'you' that it's killing your good half so you can enjoy life without guilt and inhibitions, because you like yourself. that's why there is imagery of strangulation during the opening choreo scene and of poison with an apple being handed to you by your own reflection in a broken mirror. the apple can also of course represent temptation with the devil inside you trying to sway you towards that side. if you watch more of dreamcatcher's mvs, you will find that mirrors and duplicates are recurring imagery. so why is this a key recurring theme for dreamcatcher? because they are a kpop girl group and in that industry there are certain norms that have to be abide by. dreamcatcher is actually a second reincarnation of their original group minx who did the stereotypical cutesy sexy concepts you often see with girl groups. because they are from a small company, never gained traction, and also because several members absolutely hated fitting into that mold, they were reborn as dreamcatcher and wanted to succeed or fail doing things their own way. that is why dreamcatcher's music uses a lot of rock/metal which is not common in kpop and also why their themes are often dark. they are the underdog the industry doesn't like and has tried to suppress. luckily dreamcatcher found fans outside korea to become moderately successful today but is still a relative unknown in korea. ps. the message in scream is pretty straightforward since it's an important message they didn't want listeners to misinterpret. their new trilogy which starts with maison just released a few days ago addresses environmental concerns.

Glad you did these, nice to meet Leslie as well^^ (I hope I wrote it correctly) I have the same problem with especially female artists and groups, I'm not a fan of sugary sweet high voices - nothing wrong with those, just not for me. So I'm not into what most girl groups have to offer, Dreamcatcher and a rookie group PIXY have more variety which I like (also Everglow and Gi-dle). Most girl groups don't have that aggressive sound as let's say ATEEZ and Stray Kids often do, I presume that's one of the reasons girl groups' choreos are also often less intense. Though there are plenty of boy groups with less intense choreo as well (ATEEZ are known for being exceptionally dance and performance-oriented group, as you probably know 😁). Actually, BBTrippin, the dance crew who often works as dances for ATEEZ bigger performances and who makes most of their choreo, did a choreo for girl group Everglow last year and it was so nice to see a girl group with really aggressive and "showy" choreo. Dreamcatcher has 7 members, but their Chinese member Handong was absent for a while due to her participation in a competition/reality show in China. She was replaced by a masked dancer here in Scream, for example, that's probably why you guys got confused about whether there are 6 or 7 members^^ Not all of Dreamcatcher's music has metal/rock influences, but mostly their tittle tracks do. If you want to take another look I'd suggest these: Maison MV (the newest), What MV, Endless Night MV, Sahara self-made MV. I'm not too deeply into their lore but I know they have their own universe - and there has been some controversy with them using dreamcatcher imaginary, which doesn't come from their own culture. But I've understood that they don't use that anymore.

I think in terms of tones in girl groups, my favorite would probably be (G)I - DLE's members. But I also do like some of dreamcatcher members. about scream, you were definitely onto something with the witches. there's another song on scream's album (called dystopia: the tree of language btw) called "red sun" which is basically about witch hunts and has a witchy vibe because is about love turned into obsession as a coping mechanism for sadness. the references to strangulation and the repetition of "forever love, even all your breath, forever mine" are talking about being controlling and possessive in a relationship. the line in the chorus "tell me you love me because i love you" is talking about a one-sided relationship and the narrator being in love with someone who doesnt love them back (for good reason lol). so its just like a song about a stalker who wants to control the object of their obsession
