Where to start. This was FANTASTIC live. But really, you must listen to the studio version. In fact, you should do a special listen to the entire Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Please. Maybe one side at a time? It’s one of those albums where you need to experience the whole thing. It is a masterpiece. A. Masterpiece. One of the greatest of all time. Period. Elton John in the 70’s was bigger than anyone. And he ROCKED. People today think of his quieter, softer songs from the 80’s. Easy listening. But nothing compares to the brilliance of the rock he put out in the early 70’s. “Madman Across The Water”, “Saturday Night’s Alright”, “Levon”, “Ballad of Danny Bailey”…… far too many to list. Jump down the rabbit hole. You will be blown away. And Bernie Taupin must also be mentioned. Elton John wouldn’t be who he is if not for Taupin. A genius lyricist.

He had it all. Concert pianist, composer, phenomenal singer, a great lyricist to write with. And, in a 70s time filled with colorful characters, he stood out as a colorful character. Captain Fantastic has been grabbing our attention for my entire life of music awareness. He'll break your heart, make you smile, cause you to get up and dance, get you in a fight on a Saturday night, and will generally keep you entertained any time you tune in.

As soon as you started the video, I started mourning how you had missed a wonderful atmospheric intro that did a wonderful job of setting up the environment of being in a wind-swept graveyard. Now that you've encountered the live concert performance energy of this pair of songs, I highly recommend that you listen to the studio version of it from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".

Don’t pass up listening to some of the studio tracks. Elton’s albums were meticulously crafted and engineered. Also, earlier live performances from his younger days are worth a look. He was a trouper who toured extensively in his, ahem, later years. I’ve seen him 4 times, first in 1974. Massive talent. I would suggest listening to Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy as it is an autobiographical reference to Elton and Bernie Taupin, who wrote all the lyrics. Bernie lived in the country, Elton embraced the limelight.

I loved when you said,"I thought Elton John was going to be slower"! The MAGIC of many 70's bands was that they made soft, melodic, elegant songs with extremely talented musicians and song writers. Better than any other generation or decade. The culture of the time wanted a lot of mellow, happy songs. But when it came time to ROCK and ROCK HARD, many of the "softer" bands and other genres like prog rock, stepped up and just SHREDDED! Much of this showed up in concerts. Eagles. Little River Band, Jackson Browne, Loggins and Messina, all made their way with wonderfully crafted ballads and "soft rock" songs. But when it was time to get the audience standing, dancing and screaming, they delivered with a powerhouse sound not unlike the hard driving bands like The Who or Led Zep.

It's a sonic masterpiece and quite dramatic, but a lot of that is lost in subsequent live versions of it. You've said that you're open to people suggesting one version of a particular song over another. Do yourself a favor and listen to the studio cut. I think you'll be glsd that you did. There are only two original members of Elton's band, from the recording of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, still alive, Davey Johnstone (Guitars) and Nigel Olsson (Drums). OH MY!! Welcome to the genius that is Elton John!! I've been following Elton since the 70's. You have no idea how deep of a rabbit hole THIS is!! Elton is a classically trained pianist, playing since he was a child - a prodigy actually. The coming together of lyricist Bernie Taupin and musical composer Elton John was a match made in heaven for the musical world. I don't even know where to start with making suggestions as to what to listen to - Elton has a VERY EXTENSIVE catalogue of music that spans DECADES! Since you started with Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (this performance was fire!) - I do suggest you listen to the studio version of this - it will blow your mind! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a masterpiece double album. Tumbleweed Connection, which is vintage (1970) Elton John, is a masterpiece as well. There are others too. Might I suggest YOUR SONG (studio version, 1970) since it was Elton's first international top 10 charted single. It's a touching love song, with such a pretty melody and beautiful lyrics. There are songs that are bangers and songs that will make you cry...can't wait to follow you on your journey as you discover this brilliant music!!

GREAT song to have a first reaction to. Awesome album to react to. EXTREMELY INFLUENCIAL. Where to begin the rest of your Elton John reactions - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Rocket Man, Levon, Take Me to The Pilot, Harmony, Border Song, Burn Down the Mission, Philadelphia Freedom, Empty Garden, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Mona Lisa and Madhatters, The One, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Tiny Dancer, Bennie and The Jets, Captain Fantastic & Brown Dirt Cowboy, just to name a few. His earliest works were the best and pretty much all of the ones I listed above are early with the exception of "The One". Empty Garden was his tribute to John Lennon so it's "alittle" later but still so beautiful. SO MUCH for you to react to. I've been to several of his concerts, including the Dueling piano concert with Billy Joel in Philly.

And that is how a Legend does it. He definitely went out on farewell tour with a bang. Good for you Sir Elton John. You left us a lifetime of great music to keep listening to. Enjoy your retirement and family. God bless

In our quest to see as many classical rock bands as possible while they're still with us, we saw him in concert a couple years ago. He's had such an amazing career and I feel so fortunate to have seen him! Please check out some more of his work.

I was lucky enough to see him three times in the 70s, what a performer, 2 hours, nonstop, and that was when he could still hit those high notes, best memories

These players in the band are the players that have always played on his songs. They are phenomenal. Please go down the rabbit hole. It is like no other and it’s deep. He did the soundtrack for “The Lion King”. And played a song he’d rewrote at Princess Diana’s funeral. He’s kind of a big deal. First, listen to his earlier stuff. It’s the best. “Tiny Dancer” is brilliant. Your best bet is to stick with the studio versions. For instance, the song you just listened to came out in 1973. Listen to the studio version. John was young. And his range will really blow you away. Thank you for posting your reaction. Love your channel.
