When you get past the ridiculous things that he says and concentrate on the way that he says it, you understand that his rhyme patterns, flows, wordplay and metaphors is what makes people rank him so high. It’s just unstoppable
The magazines and articles say his controversial lyrics made people eager to hear him not his rapping skills or music. According to news articles he trashed everyone in his songs even his fans, his parents and was verbally assaulting women in his songs constantly. After his comeback and after he became Eminem after slim shady that's when he became famous and admired especially in countries outside united States he was discovered when he wrote songs like "Not Afraid" that inspired people. After becoming Eminem he became so popular that even if he puts something filthy, inappropriate or evil in his songs his fans used to trash people that complain about his songs. Young kids did enjoy behaving like a gangster and doing things what slim shady mentioned in his songs. I personally enjoy to hear his fast rap part in his songs it's fun to sing along as well.
What made Em such a big hit is he was rapping but in a light hearted way. We had just been through years of people like 2pac who were always rapping in a super serious way. Em put fun in his "angry" lyrics
Should do the album version of this, because this was from the time when guys like Em actually rewrote lyrics for the “clean” version. Like that “elf” line ya’ll mentioned after first pause, that’s a complete rewrite. Actual bar is “since age 12 I felt like I’m someone else cuz I hung my original self from the top bunk with a belt”
Little known fact: Even the album version was cleaned up from the original. Most of the songs on the Slim Shady LP were Dre redressings of songs Eminem had already made a long time ago and self-released on the underground circuit. Dre's label hooked the beats up, but I noticed they insisted on toning down a couple of lines in order to avoid catching heat. For example the "spaceship" line was originally: "Running over pedestrians, R***ping lesbians, While they screaming 'Let's just be friends'" The line makes a lot less sense when he turned it into "in a spaceship." But it's understandable given this line was literally promoting a hate crime & sexual assault. I should also note that in most cases I actually preferred the production on Eminem's original cheap self made version of the songs.
@@yessum15 I always preferred the explicit version, but apparently I never heard the true OG version of this song. I always assumed the spaceship thing was more of his acid trip type writing, and meant he was way too into the whole anal probe thing, which freaked out the extraterrestrials, making them run over pedestrians as they try to get away from him.
This song is iconic. I remember I was 15yr in my bedroom watching on my 25" 📺 when this video came on MTV. Then I went out and bought the Slim Shady LP on CD 💿 and became a huge Em fan.
there are five versions of this song 1. clean 2. censored 3. uncensored 4. dirty 5. banned this proves how legendary eminem was, and still is to this day. there is no other artist that could have 5 different rated versions of their own songs, legendary.
One of the most iconic songs in the game. The presentation to me and worldwide Eminem for the 1st time. A fan since that day. Portugal here for the Goat Eminem always since day one and forever. Thanks for reacting to this legendary song. Salutes. Ps: Let's not disrespect Eminem comparing him to actual Tom Macdonald. Tom is irrelevant comparing to what Eminem was and is, he is not even 0.01 per cent.
I was a young girl (around 10 or less) in the Philippines (so I didnt fuly understand the song since English wasn't my first language) when this came out and didnt know how I was even allowed to hear this but I did (in MTV) and I saved my allowance to buy his tape. His aura, flow and charisma was just so cool
Hearing the unedited version of this song and then seeing the video to go with it at 17 yrs old really changed my life. For the better or for worse? We will never know xD but I will say my appreciation for bars and lyricism really exploded after that.
This is the very first beat that Dre played for Em in the studio. Dre said Em listened for a second and then just started singing: Hi, my name is! HI, my name is! Dre said he kmew Em.was special!
The best part about Eminem, is that he can make things rhyme and go together that shouldn’t rhyme or shouldn’t go together. He’s a rapping comedian, and he’s witty AF. I’d never want to get in an argument or fight with him. Definitely not a rap battle with him!
Eminem is too good for all the rappers in your country 🇺🇸, his style is unique, his voice is classic, this white guy is amazing.... 🤙🏼👌 (big support from france 🇫🇷)
Well... the song title said “dirty version”. What would a real reaction be if we went and watched and listed to the entire video before the reaction to figure out it’s not the real version? 🤷🏽♀️. We attempted to do the dirty version... guess we got it wrong again! 🤷🏽♀️
@@AsiaandBJ its all good. I'm not blaming anyone.. other than maybe whoever titled the video u picked lol. But u should still check out the unedited even if it's on ur own time. Then I'd like to hear what u have to say about it after hearing the kind of shit he says in that one😂😂
@@AsiaandBJ Love you guys so no hate at all but tbh for pretty much any mainstream rap song released before like 2010 there is over 90% chance the music video is censored to hell Not trying to telling you what to do, just saying most of those old rap videos are corny as hell so you're not even missing much by doing an unedited lyric video version.
@@AsiaandBJ there is a dirty version with curse words, the uncensored version with alternate lines and the EP VERSION IS COMPLETELY unedited and uncensored cause it way beyond Wilding
I was just on this videos taking notes on channels that are bigger then mines. Right off the bat I can see the professional tone, coordination of the intro.. I like this!! Subscribed and definitely watching
😅😅🤗.....rips into everybody, including himself & parodies every aspect of society Witty to the extreme, more nostalgia please 👍👍....(Eddie in the UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧)
The hardest part about those is that this came out in the late 90's. And people had questions.....and answers....but they never talked to Em. They assumed some stuff. Which makes sense. The hip-hop game is one of the most understood genres. I mean...."Slim Shady" LP I'd cool and did what it had to....but then came "Marshall Mathers" LP and people seemed confused.....like they didn't take the time to listen to this man. He had it from the beginning!
I think Ice-T said it best when he did an interview with Dr. Dre. He said "when we heard Eminem's Hi My name is for the first time, we were like WTF? But it was him! It wasn't NWA, it wasn't Snoop. You captured his own voice". You really got to give Dr. Dre a lot of credit for capturing Eminem and letting him do his thing. I was a Freshman in high school when this album came out and dam, what a ride! At first we all thought next big flop since Vanilla Ice, but next thing you know you've listen to the whole album on repeat while playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on PS1 and smoking a bowl LOL!
I remember being in school and seeing this vid for the first time on The Box and immediately becoming obsessed. It's hard to put it in perspective because we know who Eminem is now, but this was so different from everything else that was out at the time, it felt really special
"Since I was age 12, I felt like someone else cause I hung my original self from the top bunk with a belt." I ain't even gotta look up those lyrics, f that elf shit.
So if y'all doin the throwback Em, you should really check out Infinite. It was his work before he was signed with Dre. Released in '96. You can hear his lyricism right from the jump and knew it was something different and special. Love y'all. Keep doing your thing. 🥰
This was basically the world's introduction to Eminem. Who would have known that he, of ALL the hits of the 90's would still be successful 22 years later and only got better as time went on(barring a few bumps)?
The four part HBO Dr. Dre, jimmy Iovine documentary series showed this. They go downstairs to Dre’s studio. Dre has the artist mic right next to the mixing board. Dre said I got some beats, let’s see what you wanna do. Dre said Eminem starts spittin: my name is my name is… Dre panics to get all the dials correct, because “This is gold is coming out and this is off the dome!” So what we’re hearing is the first thing Eminem spit in the first minute of improvised lyrics.
This is one of the top 25 most important songs in rap history. In my opinion this is why eminem is one of the GOAT'S, he did it different from the start.
As hard and hilarious as the lyrics are in this one, the uncensored version that didn't make the final cut is significantly more unhinged, it really shows exactly the kind of image Em wanted Slim Shady to have, this was essentially his first ever record with Dre as well, the beginning of something incredible. The "Running over pedestrians while they are screaming let's just be friends." is a line that doesn't entirely make sense, that's because it was one of many that had to be changed for the album version, I will not say the original line but yall can look it up if you haven't, that ad lib makes a lot more sense when you hear it.
"This was like the first time in a very long time..." nah, Marilyn Manson was doing exactly the same thing (just whatever he thinks would piss people off) a couple of years before, but it wasn't in the same genre so it reached different groups of people. In fact, some say that a number of the things in the The Marshall Mathers LP were there to upset the same people getting uppity with MM, it was them against the world.
...as others said here, best to do the original versions........some of these vids destroy the song with different entire verses, but love that you're hitting some old scool Slim. Love the channel!
Em used to take that "I just don't give a fuck" shit to the extreme. I saw him at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC during his first tour. He missed his show. It was cancelled and rescheduled for the following night. Doors are at 7pm. And shows end by 11pm at HoB. The opening act was some trash local group that took the stage around 8pm. They finished by 8:45pm. He came out at 10:20pm, did a 30 minute set. Came back and did the AC/DC remix of My Name Is for an encore and was done after a 35 minute show. Most of the audience just stood there flipping the stage off after the encore because it was such a short show for such a long wait. I thought the whole situation was funny, like his own fans didn't realize that they were included in the group that he gave no fucks about. It was so in character for him that it was hard for me to be mad at him. And yeah, before Em, nobody was rapping the way that he did. Either in cadence, vocabulary, humor, or content. Now it's easy to find rappers doing a version of what Em does but back then he was completely unique.
Love this track. Loved your reactions and comments. You have to do "Eminem - Just Lose It" its very similar and rips on so many people. But I think Asia is a big MJ fan and might not appreciate all the jokes.
I’m late to the band wagon but you also have to realize this mans upbringing and this time of his life. Eminem is deeper than his deep lyrics. It’s a tragedy and an amazing story all the same time. Crazy. Ass. Shit. Makes. Epic. Ass. Shit.
There's just no way possible, if you live in America, you've never heard this song...im not a rap fan, but have heard this song here in Australia over 1000 times..
Eminem is the greatest and I sincerely believe that. There's other rappers I'd probably say that I like more, but I think you'd have to be a fool not to acknowledge that Eminem is basically that hero character that is on such another level he doesn't even seem real
Eminem's mother attempted to sue him for about $12 million for defamation. After 10 years the judge ruled in her favour and awarded her $25,000. She only got $1,600 after everything since the judge order she paid her lawyer $23,354 in compensation. His high school bully also sued him for defamation because he talks about him in Brain Damage. The judge threw the case out and gave the explanation in the form of a rap! Mr. Bailey complains that his rap is trash So he’s seeking compensation in the form of cash Bailey thinks he’s entitled to some monetary gain Because Eminem used his name in vain The lyrics are stories no one would take as fact They’re an exaggeration of a childish act The unedited version is super good and is pretty much banned everywhere. at around 7:00 in the video you guys discussed the comments about his mother. She has a syndrome called Münchhausen Syndrome by Proxy where basically she basically used Eminem as a scapegoat to feign illnesses and get attention for herself. It's horrific child abuse so Eminem raps about it (my guess is as a coping mechanism via trying to normalize the situation as we see with a lot of psychological distress).
