This is ONE OF EXOs MEGA HIT SONG in South Korea and it's also the start of their popularity in East and South East Asia. Hi! EXO's Growl is an exciting sounding song w/ layered, fantastic vocals & the chorus is very catchy. All 12 members were still in the MV. And, yes, it was a one-take MV. This is one situation that the saying "less is more" proved to be true. Choreography was visually impressive. This was initially released in 2 versions - Korean & Mandarin. This was EXO's lead single of their first studio album (XOXO). It was strong yet an unusual concept. You can check the beauty & the beast live version of Growl & Wolf at Mnet 2013. This was definitely a one take. Pretty impressive. There are many live performances of Growl, but favorite is their concert Elyxion in Seoul. They did a slight remix of the song and it is a MUST. Their concerts are amazing. You have to check out their Live Performances. You will not be disappointed!!!!
As you discovered, the performance version of EXO's "Growl" is a one take video, which means that it was shot all in one take without any cuts or edits. However, although it is a one take video, this does not mean they used the very first take, it just means that every time anyone made a mistake they had to start all over again from the very beginning. While filming the one take MV they had to dance the choreography about 7 times and this was the take the director and producer decided to use. They actually danced this choreography for the filming of this MV until they physically could not do it anymore. But not even this take was technically "perfect." If you notice, Kai drops the hat in the middle of the dance in the Korean version and he smoothly bends down and picks it up. (The stealing of the hat is actually part of the choreography.) He needed the hat at the end. But because it was done so effortlessly that most people don't even notice the mistake, or assume it's just part of the choreography, they decided to use this footage anyway. And if you watch the Mandarin version, if you look closely, you will see Suho steps on Sehun's foot. :D. In the beginning of the performance MV you start out by seeing 6 of the members and as the camera spins around you see the other 6 members. In the Korean version, you see the EXO-K (Korean) members featured first in the two groups. and if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version, you will see the EXO-M members featured more prominently. (Anything that takes place before 2014, you will see all 12 members involved.) However, what is even more impressive about "Growl", is the fact that they filmed 4 versions of the "Growl" MV, so not only did they have to perfect the dance in the Korean performance version, but they also had to do it again in the Mandarin version and then again in both the 2nd MV versions. And it wasn't like they could use the same footage, because the Korean and Mandarin versions aren't exactly the same -- the EXO-M and EXO-K members had different parts in each of the MVs -- so that just adds another element to this. EXO actually filmed 5 different videos for the song "Growl." There is still one more video that was released as part of their "Wolf" and "Growl" promotions. There is a drama video that combines their two songs "Growl" and "Wolf" and it's like a mini K-drama that is more like a movie or TV show with a complete story and the members playing characters. They are each trying to impress her with their moves. If you look up the English translation of the lyrics for "Growl," you will see they are pretty much acting like a wolf or beast, that can no longer control themselves around the girl and they are warning her to be careful because all she does is make them want to growl and grab her and possess her, etc. "I’m warning you just in case (listen carefully) It’s dangerous now (so dangerous) Stop provoking me (there’s going to be trouble) I don’t even know myself ... My breath keeps on stopping You walk towards me You smile at me Maybe you’re attracted to me too .... A dark shadow has woken up inside of me Sparks fly in my eyes as I look at you Everyone step away from her (step away) It’s going to get fierce from now on I’m growling, growling, growling I’m growling, growling, growling I’m growling, growling, growling If you don’t back away then I don’t care if you get hurt ..." etc. Some believe that the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc., etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more. EXO got so good at this choreography that they were able to perform the whole thing live on award shows and music programs just like they did in the MV while singing live as well. "Growl" has become what they are most known for. EXO even performed this song, along with their song "Power," at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in 2018, and both songs were Olympic theme songs that could be heard at venues and events throughout the games that year. EXO was the only Kpop group to be asked to perform at the Olympics that year, which just goes to show you how influential and popular they have become.
Lovely reaction! 😄 If you want Growl live, there’s many different videos to choose from. My personal favorite is from the Elyxion concert tour (in Seoul). They do sets of songs, so you can find a video with concert intro + The Eve + Forever + Ko Ko Bop + Growl. Absolutely stunning. Then you have the performance they did for the Olympics in Pyongchang, with Growl + Power. Amazing (and in the freezing cold outside). Then you also have the performance they did for MAMA awards in 2013 with Growl + Wolf. Really intricate stage, where D.O. actually sprained his anckle in the opening segment but still finished the 13 minute performance without his members or audience noticing. He endured the pain, but once he got backstage he fainted and was sent to the hospital. Because of that, he missed out on the first daesang EXO got later in the evening for Album of the Year (XOXO/Growl). This really turned out to be a long comment. You really need to watch any EXO live stages. And oh, I wanna suggest a new group, they’re just like EXO (when they’re starting, 12members), YG’s new bg, TREASURE. Their debut song is “Boy”. Some of their title tracks are “I Love You”, “MMM”, “My Treasure”, “Jikjin”, “Hello”. They have lots of banger b-side tracks that you’ll like especially “Darari”, “U”, “Clap”, “Yamai”, “Hold It In”.
Growl is one of the most iconic songs in Kpop, it's incredibly famous. The one take and the school uniform look were also trend setters because of this. It is highly covered and copied. It has become part of South Korean culture, it is so huge, a tune instantly recognisable and sing- a-long, dance-a-long to by all generations.

This the first song I randomly found that was Kpop related, I believe just before Kpop blew up, and what a way to start. Such flexibility, jumping between styles seamlessly, group choreography with excellent camera work and nothing beyond this world, like you said, most of the time it's a Hollywood production value, but this is grounded!

And the hat thing you comment on at 5:07 - yes, there was hat choreo earlier on, but that particular move that prompted you to say this was actually just the hat falling off Kai's head. His recovery was so smooth that they decided to keep that take lol. Professionalism!

EXO have so many wonderful songs and some of them are mentioned below, but some of my favorites are Lucky One, 24/7 and Power. It's really hard to pick out a few but the ones I did made my hair stand on end like Growl did when I first heard it. Another group I am just starting to get into is NCT. Have you heard Beatbox? I think there is no kpop group that didnt cover the song or the choreo or both. EXO as far as I know is also the nations pick (something like that, I dont know if this is the proper term though). Everyone over there knows this song...thats how popular that one is. I cant remember from my top of the head if you reacted to Miracles in December... if not it is one great ballad of EXO, from 2013 I believe. One of my favourites for sure.
