When a Zappa fan introduces a newbie to Frank, they know they have a few different options. Whoever had you do this one knew exactly what they were doing. There are no accidents in Zappa.

According to Frank Zappa, this sing is about an interviewer he encountered in his hotel room in 1977. Apparently the Engishman was asking Frank about his stance on feminism and using derogatory words to impress the female companions he brought with him. This song is an assumption of the interviewers sleazy character in Frank's mind.

Zappa was Weird Al's favorite performer. Obviously, Al took the the safer route!🤣

I once put Joe’s Garage album on for my Mum and Dad to listen. Mum was so shocked by Frank Zappa but Dad almost wet himself laughing 😂

Frank Zappa was commenting on the music and radio industry with the song Bobby Brown Goes Down. As you can tell, he did not like many of the people who worked in the music industry.

He's revealing the truth about the music business, 40 years before the #MeToo movement, because he HATED music executives and the business end.

Although humour is present in much of Zappas music, this isn’t really a joke-song, it’s more of a dis-track, against unnamed individuals. Eg, with the “rape” thing he is calling out certain creeps.

Fell in love with this as a teenager in the 70s. I am amazed I still know all the words. Provocative, and yes, ironic as hell. Also, predates Weird Al.

Bobby Brown is the story of an A and R executive who use to brag to Frank and the band about his experiences. These are Bobby's experiences done tongue in cheek but it's about a real guy.

It's so funny. Great satire. In Sweden this was a big hit! Couples in love danced the last dance at the disco to this. I guess they didn't really get the lyrics. To us that did it was hilarious! 😁

Funny thing, back in high school in 1981 or so, my girlfriend at the time went on a trip to Germany. At a party with some German students someone put this on and they started dancing to it. Apparently, this song clocked in at #4 on the German charts and the single sold 250,000 copies. What she figured out is that the words didn't really register with them. She brought the single back with her and that was my introduction to Frank Zappa.

I grew up listening to this man thanks to my father. Zappa was an abstract musical genius that spent his career making music that mocked all serious performers. It's meant to be offensive, and I enjoyed watching you see through that.

Well, that was a symphony of facial expressions! Frank could also be serious and even lyrical at times, but 'Bobby Brown' is quite the sudden introduction to his music.

He was a genius musically, and lyrically he was also, but he sang from other people's point of view. Randy Newman does the same thing.

He was among the leaders of the fight to preserve the First Amendment against the idiocy of Vice President Al Gore’s wife Tipper, who probably did as much to destroy the Constitution as any other living American.

the story I heard about this song was, that he had a bet with someone that he could write a song nasty as it can be and it would still be popular. He won. That the reason for the last line, I guess.

Frank Zappa John Denver and Dee Snider testified before Congress when they were debating on if there should be a rating system on published music. Those testimony are available on the tube. Frank showed up in a tailored three piece suit with styled hair . Appearances make an impression. John Denver showed up in what we would call today as business casual and apologised for his appearance before testimony. Dee snide essentially showed up with stage makeup and dress. Dee Snider is the singer for twisted sister. Ripped jeans, hair past the shoulder length , makeup,. And a completely foul mouth. He read a statement that immediately slighted the wife of one of the interviewers. Tipper Gore the wife of Albert Gore junior. It is interesting to see how the senators and congressmen assumed what the testimony would contain. John Denver delivered a very effective statement for why censorship or a rating system is a bad idea. Frank did pretty well on why it was dangerous to allow a wife of a senator to decide what the public is allowed to hear. Interesting to see. You should check it out. Not necessarily a review subject but it effects your income stream regardless.

Yeah, a lot of people wouldn't even want to comment on this track, especially nowadays. That being said, this track isn't really about the musicality but the humor. I don't know the full story, but I always assumed this Bobby Brown character was some kinda' pent-up, spoiled rich conservative type who was a real freak in his personal life.

Because of his songs' weirdness, far to many people missed the fact that Zappa was a musical genius and virtuoso, who didn't just write music, but was actually a composer who was able to write the music for every instrument in an orchestra. His guitar playing is often overlooked, but he was an incredible guitarist. Over the years, his band members were some of the most amazing musical talents who would become legends on their own, like Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, George Duke, Chester Thompson, Vinnie Caliuta, among many others.

There is less controversial (particularly nowadays - I think fans just 'got him' in the 70s/80s while mainstream often stayed away) material for you to try. Maybe try Cosmik Debris or Stinkfoot off the Apostrophe album. The torture never stops and Wind up working in a gas station are another 2 of my favourites. One of my favourite lines in a song is his 'I lost control of my body functions on a roller-headed lady's front lawn' (from Wonderful wino). 1979! Got this that year! Zappa is a God!!!

I remember this song very well. German stations played Bobby Brown over and over again. Either they did not understand the lyrics, which I doubt, but at least they pretended not to understand them. In the mid 80`s I had a guy from Oakland (a well known drummer - I won´t give his name though) as guest in my house. He could not believe what he heard on the radio during breakfast and got really upset. He later thought we had pranked him, but we hadn´t. A later found out that Bobby Brown was frequently aired in most of Europe, and it still is. The most bizarre scene I remember from that song was hearing it emitting from a middle class "dancing school" in which middel class teenagers tried hard to make contact with member of the opposite camp, so to speak. All extremly formal and stiff. I peaked through the window and watche dthem dance "foxtrott" to Bobby Brown. I was their age (around 15) but my english was much better, and hey - not much language skill needed to make a save guess what most of the lyrics meant. ;-) Just imagine German teenagers with a stick up their spine dancing cheek to cheek to "Thanks to Freddie, I'm a sexual spastic" :-D That was the time when we looked up to you guys in the US. The time when you had critical srtists like Zappa and Carlin and the like. What has happened since? Zappa was a musical genius, from my areas of CA. Loved how he made fun of everything and everyone, was on the news for politics, went to czechoslavakia and got appointed a position, argued against censorship, etc... Thank goodness he left us with his 4 kids and dweezil zappa. Thank you for the content.

Interesting that this generation is discovering Frank. Their reactions are fascinating, some get knee jerk offended while others actually think about what his saying and get that he was first and foremost a social commentator who pointed out inequity. I've yet to see anyone react to "Jewish Princess" though. Now that will be interesting.
