The whistling and Slash's silky smooth guitar lines really set this song apart from the rest. You should check out Civil War (lyrics) for another amazing song that uses the whistling to great affect. Slash's guitar is killer on that one as well.
This was my dad’s favorite song. There have been a few times I’ve been crying thinking of him and this songs happens to come on. “Shed a tear cuz I’m missing you” gets me every time 😢
This was released in 1988. I wouldn’t consider this heavy metal but more hard rock. Metal is more Metallica and Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. The difference between hard rock and metal is the speed and tempo of the guitars and vocals. Heavy metal is simple and fast; hard rock is slower and sexy. Remember every rock band back in the day was required by contract to include a rock ballad on an album. Record companies regarded this practice as a “recipe for success”. I’d like to request you check out a band called Skid Row. They toured with GNR back in the late 80s, same type of band with a little more edge and both bands were great friends and extremely close to each other. My favorites are Wasted Time, written about Steven Adler, original drummer for GNR. And…. Their rock ballad, I Remember You. I have seen many reaction to both so official videos should not be blocked. Thanks, I enjoy your reactions. ❤️
Well put. And I'm definitely on board with Skid Row. I do have a question for you. I have always considered Godsmack Hard Rock and they consider themselves hard rock as well. Yet the media and awards people always call them metal. What do you think
There are more differences, musically, between rock and metal. Rock is traditionally (and typically, with exceptions) more based in the blues than metal. Rock music is more likely to use chord progressions and scales based in the blues, while metal has explored other modes based in classical music and different types of cultural folk musics. Metal is also likely to use more transitions between majors and minors (chords), as more minor chords give it a "darker" feel.
@@LN-Lifer Well I’m very very old. Musically, my favorites are 60s, 70s and 80s. Godsmack was the mid 90s, I think. By then I was very unimpressed with 90s music. I think grunge ruined popular music and I equate it with the destructive value disco had in the 70s. It totally destroyed “my rock” music. That Seattle mindless whining about how miserable life was. Anyway…. While I adore the talent now of Cornell (RIP), Bennington (RIP) and Vedder, that genre still is not my favorite. Godsmack specifically? Not a big fan. You are right, as their stuff can crossover genres. I just never got their sound or message. When they were at their peak, I was still mourning the slow miserable death of my 80s rock. Personally I still classify them as grunge. But that’s strictly personal opinion. I am not a musician or an expert in anyway.
@@Mainecoonlady. wow. I totally agree with you except for I love Godsmack. I'm a GNR Junkie best band ever. I can't stand that whiny ass Kurt Cobain. 90s grunge arrogant pricks. They were actually the fake ones walking around pretending like they're embarrassed about being famous all the while knowing they were getting even more famous for that. Snobs who who couldn't handle their smack. Heroin junkies pretending to be something better. I was born in 70s but I had older cousins so I considered myself an 80s teen. It made me sick to watch all my classmates go grunge/alternative. But the thing about Godsmack is-they don't really care for that shit either. I kinda felt like they made the crap 90s end on a high note. In fact they even said they wanted to bring rock back
In 1988, Guns N' Roses were riding high on the massive success of their '87 debut 'Appetite for Destruction', so their label asked them to do some tracks for an EP that became 'GNR Lies'... According to Slash, the band rehearsed 4 acoustic songs and recorded them in 1 session... it was to explore the lighter side of GNR, in contrast to their hard rockin' tunes. 'GNR Lies' became another huge success, selling 5 million copies in the US and scoring a top 10 single w/ 'Patience' that year.
You both are young-unz! Respect though! With G&R you have to get in the weeds though. They shine in their songs that weren't top 40. Rocket Queen, Mr. Brownstone, You're Crazy (regular and acoustic versions), Yesterday's, all amazing songs!
You have metal bands that can play rock and you have rock bands that can play metal. Both can play ballads, especially the older bands. The great bands like Guns and Metallica can do it all.
Axel’s voice was great back then, but Slash was always the stand-out to me! When they formed Velvet Revolver with Scott Weiland I loved Slash even more!! Kick-ass guitarist!🔥
@@kathyembley455 you know the one weird thing about Slash. Every few years his sober date changes! After he quit GNR he talked about getting sober. When he started Velvet revolver he talked about helping Scott get sober. After Velvet revolver he talked about getting sober during Velvet Revolver. I kind of suspect that slash is full of shit and he is still getting fucked up
@@LN-Lifer he attempted to get clean in 97 after gnr . he checked into rehab in 2006 after failing to get sober himself. Velvet Revolver was around 2002-2008 so he actually got clean during VR
Of course I love this song But as a GNR Junkie I sure wish somebody would give us some deeper cuts. COMA LOCOMOTIVE ONE IN A MILLION- very controversial, possibly offensive, but undeniably fantastic
Maybe im wrong, but im fairly certain this came out well before 98. Im not even sure if they existed in 98. I dont think the Buckethead stuff was til like 2002 or something
Another great reaction, thank you.Try Hearts cover of Led Zeppelin's song " The Battle of Evermore live" I think both of you will enjoy it. Have a great day.
Best whistle ever!!!!!! GNR was so badass in the 80’s-90’s I use to love her off this album is dope and also check out Don’t cry The smiles on ur faces is priceless
Love this song still !!!......Axl's voice, i believe, was very under-rated by most people.......i love his voice, his whistling, his famous little side-to-side dance and his gorgeous hair color !!......LOL.....i'd probably still lust over him just because.....LOL
Song was written and neatly composed entirely in just one session. They were incredible when they were focused and on their game. Also, God I miss those days. 🥹
I met my husband after a Guns n Roses concert. He wanted to walk down the isle to Welcome to the Jungle. 🤣 We walked to Fleetwood Mac, Songbird instead. ❤
For the longest time this was my favorite song. These days I hate putting a single song on a pedestal and would prefer to choose songs/albums from each genre. I remember jamming out to Guns n Roses and Meatloaf quite a bit when I was in elementary school.
