First time hearing James Blunt - Monsters Reaction 

James dad, had 4 stage kidney failure and they couldn’t find a kidney …. So James wrote this to his dad as a goodbye in a sense…. I could be totally “off beam” but the way I interpret the “I’m not your son. You’re not my father. We’re just two grown men saying goodbye” line, is that they are now equals, seeing each other one eye level, rather than one or the other being in a more dominant role (as a father would normally have).

Both Blunt and his father served in the military and when James's was sent to Kosovo it has been reported that when his father said goodbye, his dad said "you are not my son and I am not your father, we are just two grown men saying goodbye ".

The only dry eyes after the completion of this video were Charles Blount's. He asked "Why is everyone crying? I'm still here!"

As Dale said in another comment the I'm not your son. You're not my father we're just two grown men saying goodbye. Is telling his father that he's there because he loves him not just because he's his father. He's committed to him not because he has to be but because he wants to be.

I heard that since both were in the military, every time one or the other went on a mission, they said to each other, “I’m not your son, you’re not my father we’re just two grown men saying goodbye.” I was touching and poetic to add it to this dedication song when he thought his dad was dying.

The lines “I’m not your son, you’re not my father ..” washes away all the baggage of a father/son relationship. “I know your mistakes, you know mine..” means no need to hash over the past, the time has gone for that. The father is dying, let him go in peace.

It may be helpful to understand that his father was a senior officer in the British army and James was a Captain in the same guards regiment so their relationship was not only father and son but also junior officer to senior officer, this is why he says "I'm not your son" (but also a brother officer) and death is a fact of life in the military (British stiff upper lip , show no emotion) so James has always found himself in an odd relationship with his father.

"You're not my father, I'm not your son" Is the singers way of relieving his terminally ill and suffering father from his duties and responsibilities a father has to a son.

I absolutely love the reaction videos to this song. The humanity driven through Blunts word and note choice brings you right beside him in his pain. We feel alongside with him. I, too, have fixated on the I’m not your son you’re not my father line… I agree with many of the thoughts others have put out there, but I would add that he is saying it isn’t a father son relationship where the father has authority over his child… in fact the song beautifully just the transition of the father being the care taker, to needing to be cared for. But even so the lyric says we are just two men saying goodbye… he is honoring his father despite the roles of authority reversing…. But then moments later he calls him Daddy… something usually only small children say when they are most reliant on their parents… I think this beautifully shows the struggle of needing to step up and care, but at the same time feeling like Daddy has so much more for you to learn… so many more conversations, life lessons…. Watch the video again…. Don’t stop until it is completely out of time. You will see at the very end of the shot, Daddy Blunt reaches over and pats James on the arm in comfort. Furthering this imagery that even though he is the one dying, in need of care… his heart is to care for his son.

"Your not my father, I'm not your son" is not literal, it's kinda like saying I Don't love you out of obligation I love you as the man you are and relation has nothing to do with my love for you. There are most likely better ways to explain what if mean than that but you catch my Drift.

I heard that James donated every penny of the money this song made to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much outstanding work to help British ex-servicemen & service women. God bless him for that.

It's not very often you get to hear your Eulogy delivered by your children while you are alive.... Being a Dad is often such a thankless job! I didn't have one myself, but I am the father of four, and I bawl every time I hear this song...

To me, it is about how relationships don't matter when everything is on the line, it is two grown men having an opportunity to say goodbye without any chain of command, any seniority, just human beings who love each other grasping at the last straws of time together and the emotion that 50 years of cultivation gives them coming to this point. I am humbled by the emotion and the strength that this song must have taken to perform in front of his father.

James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually fine a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. I don't know how James managed to keep himself together so well, but it was so damn powerful and obviously deeply emotional for him.

I lost my dad 3wks ago. May 4th 2023 n my Mama passed in Aug 2022 so its a double hitter for me an this song got me, by the end I was bawling so hard. Condolences to you an ur family.

James was potentially responsible for preventing WW3 during the Kosovo conflict. As the 1st officer to arrive at an airport he refused a order from an American officer to take the airport which was occupied by the Russian army.

I think as you grow up perspectives change. The roles blur and change. Parents and children both grow up at some point and can meet as adults. And at some point the relationship turns again and the child becomes the caring part. I think it is very respectful to say that as an adult you are on an equal footing with your parents. You are no longer a child and a parent. That's how it was between my mother and me in the end. I lost her last year. Shortly thereafter I found the video Monsters and first of all I cried a lot. I like this song a lot, even if it makes me cry again and again.

I think anybody who love their dad can feel this song, it's just that universal feeling of s'adresse when you lose your parent. And very much when you are a guy and can relate to this...

It's pretty clear that in the moment close to death being father and son is not the important thing - two grown men are saying goodbye with all that has gone between them as father and son. There is a role reversal here - dad used to look after his son, chase the monsters away, try to keep his son safe and now the son is doing the same in the moments his father is passing from this life - don't be afraid, I'll keep the light on and I'll chase your monsters away. And while you're away, I'll be a good person and make you proud. This was based on James's experience with his father featured here in the video when it seemed his father would die of kidney disease. Fortunately, his father managed to find a donor received a transplant.

You are correct and he says you’re not a father I am not your son he is saying that in a way it’s time to forget about labels let’s just enjoy each other in the little time amount we have left, his dad was dying A kidney failure and you need a kidney yeah and if I want to be not mistaken James actually gave him a kidney but don’t quote me on that one, and he was already making the song and everything so he decided on a different approach with the music video and I think it ending they changed a little bit but I don’t think by much because I still like even though you’re you’re fine now we still need to live life to the fullest!
