Joan Jett and Pat Benatar…..two of the best female powerhouses of rock ‘n’ roll! You can’t go wrong with any song of theirs you pick! Great reaction! *NEXT!*
@@onnasenshi7739 Debbie Harry's (Blondie) voice I always thought of as more ethereal and earthy - not so much a powerhouse vocal and Suzi Quatro I listened to more for her bass playing skill than vocals.
...100% mate..Pat Benatar & Joan Jett are fucking Rock n Roll royalty ..check out Pat Benatar 'Live From Earth' 1983..and if you want to see Joan Jett command a stage, check out the video to 'Cherry Bomb' there's cool live video footage in it..🤘😜👍
You MUST review her performance at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame where she sings I Hate Myself for Loving You, i Don't Give a Dam About My Bad Reputation, and Cherry Bomb...all live songs will blow you away.
She didn't do "hate myself", she did Bad Rep, Cherry Bomb w/ original bassist Gary Ryan and Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Crimson and Clover w/ the original artist Tommy James and an appearance of Miley Cyrus who inducted her.
So good. I love that song. I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation Living in the past, it's a new generation A girl can do what she wants to do and that's what I'm gonna do
Tommy James performed the song w/ Joan in 2015 when she was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame! That was great when Joan introduced him as someone who wrote one of her biggest hits. (Also, her manager/producer Kenny Laguna BRIEFLY played Keyboards for Tommy James and the Shondells which is how the song got to Joan to try)
One of Rock and Rolls greatest anthems by one of Rocks greatest bad girls. For the GenZ's out there, a jukebox was an automated machine that played vinyl records for a dime (later quarter) a song.
On stage she's about nothing but the music. Raw, powerful, no nonsense. Just saw her on The Stadium Tour a little over a year ago. She still kicks ass.
Joan Jett is my favorite female rock singer!! All their songs are good, try Do you wanna touch and Crimson and Clover too!! The runaways were good as well❤️❤️
Joan is GREAT live too! I saw her last year and it was such a "moment" when the whole fuckin' stadium was singing every single word along with her...She should be very proud of her rock n roll legacy.
Joan Jett is truly a pioneer . Try " Do you wanna touch me (oh yea)" if you want to hear a song getting straight to the point!! ... you will love it. We play it in spin class all of the time for motivation!!! Another good one is "I hate myself for loving you"... a real in-your-face-song.
“I Love Rock n Roll" song, the story: When Joan Jett was in her first band the Runaways (all teenage girl punk/metal influenced band) they toured London, England. The Arrows, in England, used this song as a "B-side" song to one of their hits in 1975 and when Joan heard it she INSTANTLY wanted to do a cover of it on the 2nd Runaways album. However, since the Runaways already did a cover with "Rock n Roll" in the title on the first album in 1976 (Lou Reed's "Rock n Roll"), the girls didn't want to have another song with "Rock n Roll" in the title and look "cheesy" so Joan held onto the song for a bit. Once the Runaways broke up and Joan started to pursue a solo career she originally recorded this song (as well as another one) w/ Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols (another English Punk Rock group), It's on youtube if you want to hear it. When Joan formed the Blackhearts in 1980 (after she released her first solo record as just "Joan Jett", later renamed "Bad Reputation") her manager thought it was a good idea to RE-record the song w/ the Blackhearts and make it a stronger and less "Sophomoric" sounding and THIS is the result. The song went to #1 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks in a row!!! The original video was shot in color, however Joan HATED the red jumpsuit they gave her so they decided to release it in black and white and they loved it because of its vintage look. The color version is now available as well. The song at the beginning of the “I Love Rock n Roll” music video: The song in the beginning is “Bad Reputation” from her first solo record (right before forming the Blackhearts). The Runaways (Joan’s first band, all teenage girls) had a reputation for being “jailbait” rock and had a reputation for partying. However, after the Runaways broke up Joan went into a DEEP depression. She contemplated joining the military, but MUSIC was her PASSION. At first she didn’t know WHAT to do. When the Runaways were a band the MEDIA and the INDUSTRY all told them “girls can’t play rock n roll” (something the Go-Go’s and other female artists and bands would deal with) and at this point it LOOKED like they all won and were laughing at Joan. She started drinking REAL heavy and abusing drugs badly. She hung out w/ “punks” from the L.A. scene such as Sid Vicious and others, that got her labeled as a trouble maker, thus she had a bad reputation among the industry and NO ONE would sign her to a record deal (23 major and minor record labels sent her rejection letters which she still has to this day), so Joan and her manager started their OWN label “Blackheart Records” and put the first 2 albums on their own. The SONG “Bad Reputation” was about her attitude towards the haters. “Everyone can say what they wanna say, it never gets better anyway. So WHY should I care ‘bout a bad reputation anyway? Oh no!” AFTER the song and album “I Love Rock n Roll” became HUGE they RE released the song “Bad Reputation” as a single and NOW became a hit!!! They recorded a video for it basically giving a middle finger to all the record companies that told her NO, worth checking out. The song would also become a staple in Pop Culture being used as the opening song for the show “Freaks and Geeks” and used in films such as “10 things I Hate about you” and “Shrek”.
I was about 11 or 12 when this came out. I vividly remember playing the 45 single on repeat on my little portable record player and feeling like a pubescent badass.😂
I was in high school when this song came out. EVERY KID AT SCHOOL was SO into this song. It was such an anthem. What a great time to be alive......and a teenager.
It's iconic, both the song (let's forget it's a cover, it will always be her / their song now lol) and Ms. Jett, one of the most badass rocker and musician out there. (PS the rock-punk song playing at the very start of the video is alos Joan Jett, it's her hit 'Bad Reputation')
I remember when this song came out I wanted to be like Joan Jett. She was pretty, sang great and was a badass. lol Love this song and many others from her.
JOAN JETT!!! She is called the “Godmother of Punk” and “Queen of Rock n Roll”, and has pioneered women in hard rock since the 70’s! She got her first guitar at 13 as a Xmas present from her parents and was musically influenced by T-Rex, Bowie, Iggy Pop & SUZI QUATRO. At 15 years old she started the FIRST ALL GIRL punk/metal influenced hard rock band in 1975 which also featured a teenage Lita Ford on lead guitar and vocalist Cherie Currie (However, FANNY was the first all girl ROCK band but punk had not come into the music scene yet until the mid 70’s). In 1976 they debuted their first album “The Runaways” which spawned the classic song “Cherry Bomb”, which Joan Jett wrote as an audition song for vocalist Cherie Currie, alluding to her name and the fact that they were all “teenage firecrackers” (Cherie Currie, 16, wore a corset, fishnet stockings, black underwear and high heels on stage which gave them the reputation as “jailbait rock”). Although this was their most recognized song, it certainly does not define them as a band. Their album debuted the same time that Heart debuted their album “Dreamboat Annie”. Both bands had to deal with sexism and misogyny from the male dominated genre of hard rock, although Heart was backed by male band members, the Runaways got it worse being ALL teenage girls. They released “Queens of Noise” in 1977 and toured Japan where they were HUGE, they were NEVER taken seriously in America. Lead vocalist Cherie Currie quit the band during the tour making Joan the front girl of the band. After the tour they recorded what I think is their best album, “Waiting for the Night'' which Joan Jett wrote most of the songs, along with some songs written by Lita Ford. It was a punk/metal influenced album after touring in England and being exposed to the punk rock scene, later touring with the Ramones, Cheap Trick, etc. By 1978 there was heavy drug abuse and tension among the remaining 3 members of the band (Joan, Lita and drummer Sandy West) after they released their 4th and final studio album “And now, the Runaways” (which featured the song “Black Leather” written by Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols). Joan Jett gravitated towards a Punk sound and both Lita and Sandy towards a more heavy metal sound. By Spring 1979 the band broke up and Joan Jett began her solo career which would last till this day. Later Lita Ford would also find mainstream success. In 1979 Joan Jett met Kenny Laguna, a producer who also became her manager. Together they set out to launch Joan’s solo career but NO ONE wanted Joan Jett. Joan recorded FIVE songs on a demo tape: “I Love Rock n Roll”, “Crimson and Clover”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah!), “Bad Reputation” and “You Don’t Own Me”. The demo was sent to *23* major, and minor, record labels. ALL *23* labels rejected her saying, in essence, she wasn’t marketable. Their letters said Joan “should lose the guitar” or “look prettier” and she needed a “song search”. Not giving up, Kenny Laguna took some money he had saved and both Kenny and Joan started their OWN record label, BLACKHEART Records. They recorded their first album titled “Joan Jett” in 1980 and sold their records at shows from the trunk of their car. Eventually they were signed on to Boardwalk Records and they re-released the album as “Bad Reputation”. Joan put an ad saying, “Wanted 3 good men” for a band and the Blackhearts were formed. While still struggling as a woman in hard rock the band recorded the album “I Love Rock n Roll”. The title track went to #1 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks in a row!!! The next single “Crimson and Clover” went to #5 (a cover song from Tommy James and the Shondells which Kenny Laguna temporarily played keyboards with and he brought the song for Joan to sing). They re-released the songs “Bad Reputation” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me” and they became hits. The video for “Bad Reputation” was a JAB at all 23 record labels that rejected her (note that the 4 songs that were rejected were 4 hits on the Billboard charts). Joan Jett was HUGE and was touring with Queen, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and other big bands. In 1983 she released the album called “Album” which had 2 hits “Fake Friends” and a cover of Sly and the Family Stones’ “Everyday People”. In 1986 she appeared in the movie “Light of Day” with Michael J. Fox, with her acting performance getting great reviews, and the title track song written by Bruce Springsteen. In 1988 “Up your Alley” was released and 2 songs were hits “I Hate Myself For Loving You” and “Little Liar”. In 1990 “The Hit List” was released, an album of ALL cover songs, including the covers of “Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap)” by AC/DC, “Love Hurts” by Nazareth and “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” by CCR. In the early 90’s the Grunge era came but Joan continued putting out albums and non stop touring. “Notorious” (1992) and “Pure and Simple” (1994) were released. Joan also did other TV shows and movies such as “Boogie Boy”. In 2000 she was doing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Broadway playing Magenta. “Naked” CD was released in Japan (not in America) which had the song “Science Fiction, Double Feature”. In 2006 she released the “Sinner” CD which had the video for the song “ACDC”, a cover of the Sweets’ song (about bisexuality) which featured Carmen Elektra. Joan Jett also toured the Vans Warped Tour main stage that year. In 2013 she released “Unvarnished” and the song/video for “Any Weather” co written by Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and the song “Soulmates to Strangers” co written by Trans musician Laura Jane Grace from Against Me. In 2015 Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame after the previous year when Joan Jett performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” w/ Nirvana when they were inducted. Throughout the years Joan Jett has written songs for other artists such as Alice Cooper, L7, Bikini Kill, etc. She was dubbed the leader of the “Riot Girrl” movement of the 90’s. She produced other bands and signed them to her Blackheart Records label. She is an animal activist for P.E.T.A. For years she also goes to play free shows for American troops overseas bringing them “a piece of home”. She is a singer, musician, songwriter, producer, record label owner, activist, pioneer, legend and Icon. Below will be some links to Official Videos and performances. For a more in depth account of her history check out the Showtime music documentary “Bad Reputation” it’s on RU-vid.
The Summer of 1981 I lived across the street from a family with 3 kids under 10 years old... I'm still haunted by those kids singing over and over the hook... AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH... I love rock 'n roll so put another dime in the juke box baby... for hours... seriously for hours...
Since The Super Bowl just happened, and if you are a Pro Football fan, the Joan Jett and The Blackhearts song "I Hate Myself For Loving You" was reworked to be the theme song for Sunday Night Football. It was sung by Joan for the first two years, then Faith Hill and now Carrie Underwood. Still the same song. Seen Joan twice, she has a ton of energy and projects it throughout the whole room, or arena, or stadium. AAAwwww!
It's 1981, I'm 10yo and in 4th grade, in a suburb of Indianapolis. It's recess, the boys are in their little groups doing whatever boys did back then, and us girls are in our little groups, doing what we did back then. Even at 10yo there were girlie girls in pink, giggling at the boys, and talking about Duran Duran, and the tom boy-girls in jean jackets, and scuffed up levis talking about rock n roll, and pretending not to notice the cute boys. Her name was Tiffany, long dirty blonde hair, with slightly feathered bangs, wearing a scruffy blue satin jacket that was probably a hand me down from an older sister, holding a small boom box. She pulled a cassette tape from her pocket, popped it in and pressed play. Joan Jetts snarl began "Saw him standin there by the record machine, knew he must've been about 17". In that very moment, we felt like teenagers, weathered and jaded, and wondering what it was like to smoke cigarettes, and drink beer. We felt cool. I'll never forget that moment, Tiffany, or that song. 'Do ya wanna touch me there" is my emphatic suggestion!
She’s great in concert and will be touring with Alanis Morissette this summer!! Lots of great songs as noted-Crimson and Clover, I hate Myself For Loving You, Do You Wanna Touch Me, Bad Reputation!! Enjoy!
Joan is very hot, a very hot artist The Runaways originally influenced the Pretenders and the Go Go's, and Belinda Carlisle of the Go Go's, and Blondie, and Debbie Harry of Blondie, as well as later Billy Idol.❤
As well as the Bangles since their bassist Mickey Steele was in the first incarnation of the Runaways in 1975 w/ Joan Jett and Sandy West when they were a 3 piece and Mickey was lead vocalist and bassist.
1982 actually, and also that year they RE-released "Bad Reputation" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me?" as singles and put out the videos. She was on fire that year!
This takes me back the summer when this came out. My brother and I went a carnival several times to ride a certain ride and everytime we got in the ride this song was playing. Memories.
In 1981 I managed a arcade with the latest jukebox that played the new CD's, and I can still hear this song playing loud and strong in my mind from back then. Being the most popular juke box song, I must have heard this fifty times a night and it never got old.
That's impressive. Because the record wasn't released until late November 1981, in Australia, and the first, commercial, CD ever was made in...1982, in Japan.
Most likely records... 45's specifically. Or at least in my neck of the woods. The album this song is off of released in '81. CDs gained widespread use in '84, but people didn't really replace their jukeboxes very often. Hell... I was still buying cassettes in '89.
I'm just really surprised you didn't know it already. It has so much power it gets played a lot. It is the epitome of hard rock musically and in its attitude.
Oh, YES! Melissa Etheridge is absolutely in the same vein. In ~1994 I (female, late 20’s) got off work early, drove an hour and a half into the guts of Milwaukee, sang my lungs out at ME’s concert, drove an hour and a half home, and went to work the next morning. I was sleepy…but so, so happy! Salvo could react to anything from her Yes I Am album and it would be great. But yes, “I’m the Only One” would make an excellent start….
Joan Jett broke so many barriers, open the door for those females that had an "edge" and love for punk rock. Def need to check Crimson and Clover, her cover song from an oldie.
I watched the Movie 'Light of Day' with Joan Jett and Michael J Fox. I mean, it isn't a deep intellectual masterpiece, but if you have been around bands it rings true in several ways. I loved it. "I'm a little hotwired but I'm feeling ok, I got a little lost, along the way. But I'm just around the corner to the Light of Day, yeah!" 'Is anybody here from Cleveland!' "Don't ask me what I'm doing cause I DON'T KNOW yeah!" -- The movie has one of my top quotes when it comes to rock. "That's what I love about rock and roll. Commitment."
Oh, we're at proper classical, now! Yeah, it's punk. There's no surprise Joan is called the "Original Riot Grrrl". Now, the next one to do is Bad Reputation, the video to which tells the story of Joan and Blackheart Records! Then, after than, "Light of Day", "I Hate Myself for Loving You", "Crimson and Clover", "Do You Wanna Touch", AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds"....and the list goes on.
"Cherry Bomb" is worth a listen also, although Cherie Currie is on lead vocals for The Runaways, Joan was on rhythm guitar and another lovely badass 80's frontwoman, Lita Ford was on lead guitar.
Joan Jett did this song RIGHT. Joan was one of the big pioneers for women in rock and roll in the 1970s. Her, Suzi Quatro, and (I would argue) the band Fanny really paved the way in that decade.
Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and Heart are the top 3 picks for anyone who wants to learn about how female rockers changed the way that people thought of "Rock-N-Roll" being a "boys club".
Her early stuff had some of that because of her manager/producer Kenny Laguna who was known for 60's bubble gum pop music production. In the 1990's till now her music is definitely more punk pop rock.
"Pure and Simple" in 1994 was a GREAT album, grungy, and the "Evil Stig" CD she did w/ the Gits in 1995 is also amazing. "GROAMY" was an OK album for ME, Kenny Laguna really influenced that bubble gum pop sound into it. Album had more of a Rolling Stones vibe, straight up RAW unpolished rock n roll sound which appeals to me. "Up your Alley" from 1998 was also a GREAT album that had 2 top 10 hits (I hate myself for loving you and Little Liar), polished in production yes but great songs on it and when done live even better! :)
