This is a Motown song , originally by The Four Tops in 1964; Johnny Rivers covered it 3 years later. As much as I like Johnny Rivers, the original is a better version. Check it out. Y’all haven’t done a day of covers in a while.

Love Johnny Rivers! There's another guy I don't think you've reacted to named Gene Pitney. He was a 60's - 70's artist with a very unique voice. Try Liberty Valance, Town with Pity or Only Love Can Break a Heart. A voice worth listening to.

@@johncampbell756 They are thinking it is MOTOWN because the song as written is a Motown song but the fact that the Four Tops sang it doesn't mean it is superior. I love the Four Tops and I love Johnny Rivers. Both songs are excellent and both renditions sound like a Motown song. Some prefer JR some prefer 4Ts but in both cases it is simply an opinion.

@@bryanwhitton1784 Point taken. The two sentences were intended to be separate comments. Whether you agree the original is better or not, the fact that it was MOTOWN is why it sounds like MOTOWN. That part is factual. But I can see why you read the second sentence as dependent on the entire first sentence and not just the Four Tops part. Sorry about that.

@@johncampbell756 No worries but thank you for the response. I posted elsewhere that after the many comparisons between the two versions I listened to both back to back. It was interesting to listen that way. It is really hard to not love the harmonies of the Four Tops. JR uses an echo in his cover but the Four Tops win out here. But the instrumentation and backup vocals are better in the JR cover. IMHO. But I really like them both.

Johnny became known as the king of covers as he had so many hits which were made popular in previous years by others, but having said that THIS one I believe was BETTER IMO than the original. His other big one in that time period was Poor Side Of Town, really great and perhaps my favorite was Summer Rain.

I love both versions. I would say that the Four Tops' version is smooth, 12-year old single-malt Scotch, and Johnny Rivers' version is bright sparkling Champagne.

For an interesting change, how about taking a shot at some songs that made the Top 10 and were sung in foreign languages? A few for starters: "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto (sung in Japanese), and "La Bamba" sung by Richie Valens in Spanish. (interesting factoid: both of these performers died in plane crashes).

If you haven't seen it, you must watch the RU-vid video of Johnny performing this beauty on the Ed Sullivan Show. Backing dancers in silver lame min-dresses, psychedelically colored platform risers. It is just an amazing time capsule of 1967.

Awe sweet Johnny Rivers, love his voice. I was blessed to see Johnny Rivers in concert at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston, Texas July 2, 2016. It was a fantastic show he sang all my favorites "Mountain of Love" including this one "Baby, I need your Lovin' ". Born Nov. 7, 1942 John Henry Ramistella in New York City, was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he calls home.

Johnny was my first favorite musical artist way back in 1964. Although he's done quite a bit of cover tunes over his career (he just recently retired from touring), he's got some really good stuff, stuff as well known: Goin' Back to Big Sur and Look to Your Soul off his Touch of Gold album and Carpet Man off his rewind album. Thanks for taking an interest in his music.

This is one of two Motown covers that were big hits for Johnny. This one was originally by the Four Tops; the other was "Tracks of My Tears," originally by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. "Tracks" is a terrific song too. Johnny did a lot of cover tunes, and did them well.

Love Johnny River!!! Love "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny! Love this song, "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" by him. Good reaction. When I hear this song I thought he was from Motown when I hear this song on the radio. Amber is correct...he does sound like he is from Motown, but remember The Beatles and The Motown sound was everywhere and influenced artists every where. So, I really not surprise that Johnny and other artists sounded like Motown.

With everyone's comments about the Four Tops rendition of this song being better I had to go and listen to both versions back to back. My favorite Motown group s the Four Tops an Johnny Rivers is one of if not my favorite solo artist of the 60's. In comparing the two its like selecting your favorite version of chocolate ice cream. As long as it is a good quality ice cream, just like this song, they are different but both very good. I think the instrumentation and background vocals are better with Johnnie Rivers but it is REALLY hard to beat the Four Tops for the soul sound of the music. I really like them both. But I like Johnny Rivers's version better for general listening but I would never turn off either one. JMHO.
