I don't think anyone else has mentioned this yet: the violin solo on The Fog is played by Nigel Kennedy, one-time "enfant terrible" of the British classical music scene, and certainly an extravagantly musician. His solo is simply exquisite, adding the icing on an already gorgeous cake. The swirling orchestral arrangement fits so perfectly with the song. A proper eargasm.
...Kate was/is a magician, who expresses herself through the medium of music, and choreography - her videos are as hypnotic as her singing and overall compositions. I also felt throughout her career that she always was true to herself... whatever she wanted to do, she did authentically... a role model for a whole generation... love Kate 💖 ...and what a match to hear and see your reaction, Brandon - being the magician of deep listening, feelings and words, that you are... 🌈
So nice to see you reacting to 3 of Kate's best songs imo. The Kick Inside album and Sensual World close to my Heart from youth, and both Beautifully Emotive songs from each one. The Fog on a different tangent but equally as Emotive. Thanks again Brandon as always❤️
The Man With The Child In His Eyes Only 13 when she composed it. This was one Gilmour had professionally produced and recorded, she was 15 or 16 here singing it.
More Kate! You are in for a treat. She came out of the gate running with her first album. (Her second is also outstanding, no sophomore slump.) I fully absorbed “The Sensual World” when it first came out. It was my real entry point to Kate’s world. It’s a masterpiece throughout.
@@retroreactions.... there’s a song on the Sensual World (“Deeper Understanding” is the title) where she sings about online dating, long before it was a popular thing, using computer beeps and tech noises, but painting a picture of unsatisfied longing for love and connection. It’s poignant, funny, insightful, and quirky as hell! But it hits hard if you find yourself spending too much time with machines instead of people 😁. My other favorite quirky song of hers is an older one, called “Babushka”. Great, unusual vocals and energy! She is a creative treasure
Ah, so she predicted the future as well! Pretty sure I've heard at least the chorus of Babushka, but I will add your votes for both of those songs, thanks!
@@robslack5468I'm never concerned with peoples interruption of songs because they're all open but when things are said with conviction I take note, I'm saying this in a kind way but letting you know deeper understanding isn't about on-line dating, she was ahead on time with a song about a friendship someone builds with their computer and shuts out human connection.
I'm pretty sure the vocal on The Man With The Child In His Eyes is the one from the original demo, so it was recorded when she was 16. Mind-blowing brilliance.
Yes, love Sinead. Only know a few of her songs. I just listened to her on the song "Kingdom of Rain" by The The. I highly suggest it if you've never heard it!
All three songs exude excellence, pretty much a guarantee when it's Kate Bush! 🥰🥰🥰 It's been a long time since I've heard "The Fog", what a treat! The other two I'm very familiar with, "The Sensual World" is great and uses a modified Balkan folk music melody (I used to be in a Balkan folk music band and we did a version of the original, I'm forgetting the name at the moment but it was in an odd time signature, where Kate modified it to fit into an even time signature) and "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" is a long time top favorite of mine and can bring tears occasionally! Also on The Sensual World album my most favorite cut is "This Woman's Work", which was a contender for my Eclectic Love Songs list but, at one point I had all of the saddest tear rendering songs I could think of and it was just too heavy to listen to all of them in a row! (plus the list was an hour and a half long!😅)
Well said! Not sure if I knew that you loved Kate. I probably just forgot, as you surely watched my Ninth Wave reaction. I've already reacted to This Woman's Work by the way! 😊
@@retroreactions.... Yes indeed, the Ninth Wave is my most favorite Kate Bush masterwork and I watched and commented on both parts off your reaction. 😎👍 It looks like I haven't watched your "This Woman's Work" reaction yet but I'll get around to it one of these days. 😊
Awesome choices today my friend! I’m familiar with all three songs, but there’s part of me really drawn to “The Man With The Child In His Eyes”. I’ve loved it for years, the reason I’ve suggested it before, but it’s definitely way too short. I tested positive for Covid earlier today, and really feel like crap now! I did find these songs uplifting though, and made me feel a little better! 😷 I’m soooo glad my concerts weren’t this week.
Last minute switch up that I knew you'd enjoy! Loved The Man, but all 3 special songs for me. As if she could ever miss, haha. Darn, sorry to hear you caught it. I pray you get and feel better ASAP! 🎶🙏🎶
@@retroreactions....Thanks Brandon, my daughter is doing better, and I’m hoping I have this no more than another day or two. She caught it (I think) when at a concert last Saturday and was in the mosh pit! Go figure…
Incredible Kate Bush - talented from God, she can touch directly to your soul and this music is so intricated and very well arranged - dynamic, sensitive and so beliavable! Thank you, you can always reach the core of the song ;-)
Kate is always captivating at all age she were, a true artist at different stages, everywere some sound or arrangements surprises. Kate Bush! Great as always, deep insights and listening. Some folk and Irish influences as classical orchestration is also exciting, with middle age moods in the last song.
I wondered if you'd get around to Kate Bush. She is one of my favorite artists. Kick Inside is my favorite album as her beautiful love songs are amazing. Loved your reaction. She has some songs that really transcend and move you. The Sensual World song reminds me of Loreena McKennits "Mummers Dance" which if you haven't heard it, I think you'll enjoy a lot.
Hi Claire! Yes, I love Kate's music so much. I actually have 8 total reaction videos with her music, including the entire "The Ninth Wave"! So happy you enjoyed my reaction. Wow, never heard of Loreena. Is Mummers your fave? Thanks for watching! 😊
The demo of Child in His Eyes ended up with David Gilmour, IIRC. Plus a few others, and he lent her studio time and the rest is as they say… The others are from a much-treasured album. Love it so much ❤ Gilmour on 2 tracks ❤❤
The Man With The Child In His Eyes is a favourite of mine from her debut album (along with The Kick Inside). The Sensual World album is a sublime study in subtilty, of course This Woman's Work is the stand out track, but from this album Never Be Mine is also top on my list.
Hey Brandon, thank you for the warm memories of my teenage years. TMWACIHE is a delight and one of the first song I heard who made me realise that I love English pop. It's timeless and you can feel the lany splendors to come. TSW is hypnotic and always makes me think of swirling dervishes. An interesting fact: the lyrics from Janes Joyce's Ulysses and the Molly monologue were problematic at first since his estate refused to let her use it, then when they heard the alternate version she came up with, they finally agreed. Also, she said she repeats "yes" because it is for her "the most feminine word of the language". Certainly food for thought... TF I completely forgot about, what a complex production! It's as hopeful as it is ominous and there's really no one quite like Kate Bush. Eat your heart out, Tori! Cheers my dear, please pick from The Dreaming next, it's her darkest album and I love it!
Ohhh so yesss... love that you pause respectfully at the end of the tracks, to take in & taste the last strains of 'Kate Bush time.' 🙌 Yes please to Taste of Honey & Aerial. For me, she always goes to the depths, on many levels. 🪷
Hello there! Yes, plus it takes me a minute to come back to reality or clear the watery eyes at the end sometimes...😊 No one hits quite like she does. Sadly Aerial is outside the channel window and will have to be saved for Patreon, but tons more pre-2000 Kate to go! Clearly she's on permanent rotation for the life of my channel! Thanks for tuning in!
@retroreactions.... for sure, taking a beat is a good thing rain, tears or shine. Too bad about Sea of Honey, so will consider joining you on Patreon. Looking forward to more Kate, as your inspirations flow, thanks again! 🪷
@@retroreactions.... Please consider doing Aerial on the channel, I really love your reactions and it's my favorite album so it would mean a lot! So many of us love post 2000s Kate! 🙏
One of the greatest and most progressive musicians ever. She inspired so many people. To be honest, when The Sensual World Album came out it was a huge disapointment for me - The title track and especially The Fog were by far the best songs imo. Until then she developped her music, sound, and production, as well as experimentation with every album since Lionheart. It was also a very "soft" album for me compared to her harder and more experimental previous albums. In retrospective it is not that bad but still one of my least beloved ones (The disasteroursl produced - also by her opinion - The Red Shoes is much worse).
You're right that Kate expressed dissatisfaction with the production on The Sensual World and The Red Shoes, and the latter is certainly uneven. I don't agree that they're poor records though. The Sensual World, in addition to the two songs you mention, has This Woman's Work, justly one of her most beloved songs; the uncannily prescient Deeper Understanding; and the lovely, low-key Never Be Mine. As for The Red Shoes, its highlights are magnificent: the beautiful, poignant Moments Of Pleasure; the menacing, insistent title song; the euphoric Top Of The City, with a truly epic bassline; and the last song, You're The One, one of the most nakedly personal songs she ever recorded, and a real emotional gut punch.
"The Kick Inside"...I love this album. One of the most fascinating debut LPs of all time. The album doesn't contain a single bad song. And Kate's expressive voice is the highlight in every one.
