Oh man, this song was *everywhere* when it was released. People couldn't get enough of it. There was just something so charming about the aesthetic they presented in the video. I kinda saw it as a parody of the previous era's "I'm so rich" rapper stylings.
@@tim.noonan Yes, Lil Dicky is great. Not sure why you felt the need to use him in order to put down an artist you dislike, but congratulations on having an opinion I guess. lol
In addition to being catchy as hell, I think people really vibed with the way this song said, "Hey, just because you don't have money for expensive shit, that doesn't mean you can't dress outlandishly and feel awesome while doing it." Too many songs equate confidence and coolness with money, and this song deliberately flew in the opposite direction as hard as it could. :)
I think this might of been one of the most important songs culturally for that year. Convincing the poor or the middle class that they are inferior for not wearing some brand and getting them to waste money that could be actually improving thier lives is a travesty. As someone who grew up dirt poor this was the best feeling.
Other than socks, shoes, hats and underwear I've not bought much new in over 20 years. This song blew my spots up in the worst way for 5 ish years lmao #Savers4lyfe
This song is addictive. This song is almost a decade old and I still find myself doing that stupid “what what, what, what what” thing from the beginning of the song.
lmao more like everytime i walk into an outlet, or wal mart, I hear the music in my head aaaaannd. "I'm gonna pop some tagssssss" i'm off to the races.
Macklemore has tracks where he can come off as corny and comedic, but that’s intentional. Then he has serious songs like drug dealer and other side remix which are incredible storytelling songs.
I'm here to say, I worked at a thrift store when this song came out and yes, it brought more people in. It's great, people don't have to spend a lot of money to dress nice. 👌
when i was in HS, Retro was just becoming a thing. finding that skinny tie from the 50's for a quarter, was a godsend. button up shirts from french indonesia for less than a dollar even more so. This song was more about the liberties the companies take to jack their prices up, rather than the freedom of finding cool stuff at a thrift. No lie grandad had some cool shit, we just gotta reclaim it.
I hated new clothes...I always shopped at the second hand and the army/ navy surplus...I asked my mom the other day what happened to my old man coat...I need it. 😁
I’m from Seattle as is he and I can say that this song is 100% legit. People that were “hipsters” did shop at thrift stores to look more unique or whatever and then it just went hyperdrive after this song. XD
Yep. I’m from Seattle too. I used to have the most badass tshirt collection. Had like 50 shirts with wolves on them. Next thing you know, there wasn’t shit that was cool left in the thrift stores. I always said that Macklemore ruined my style. Lol
Also from Seattle. Do some research on Dave Niehaus first to get some perspective about those of us from the area and then react to "My Oh My". That song, to me, is what speaks to him as an artist. He is just singing about his childhood. To be fair though, you won't go wrong reacting to any one of his songs. He is a master at the craft
My MIL used to live in Bothell, and loved going around to all the thrift stores in the area on a regular basis. I was visiting her for a couple of weeks when this song came out and when I showed her the video, we both recognized which stores it was filmed in.
Try going to the Redmond Goodwill - I found an entire cashmere suit there, once (mauve/purple, with a cigarette burn on the cuff). Got it for a bachelor party I was going to for $10. EDIT - I wouldn't say it was QUITE "Last year's Armani" in terms of selection, but there were some seriously nice "y'know, you could have got some cash at a consignment store" pieces there. I suppose if you consider the tax write-off you can get, it makes a bit more sense though. (ie, essentially selling it for 34% of the original cost of the item.)
"No sneaker head in the world" would be giving props to the velcros ? Dude... You clearly didn't grow up in the Bronx during the 90s. LOL. Good content, keep going.
The song “Otherside” shows off his serious side as an artist. After experiencing the fun of thrift shop it might be interesting to listen to one of his deeper songs. “Same Love” and “wing$” also good serious ones by him. If you’re looking to get weird and have fun, “and we danced.”
Otherside was what helped me look at my addiction and realize I was going nowhere fast and needed a change. Macklemore can forever call me his fan with that song and "Starting Over."
I’m so glad you reacted to this. Thrift Shop was an absolute classic in the early 2010s for many especially in the gaming world. Brings back memories every time I hear it
Macklemore is an awesome artist, his song go from silly like Thrift Shop, serious like Same Love and Otherside to songs that make you dance like Downtown and Can't Hold us Down.
"Not meant to be serious?!?" Any culture that pushes (some % from corporation, some % from inside the culture) the requirement of $50 t-shirts and a vast/expensive sneaker collection to considered accepted is a serious problem. And holding up a mirror to that absurdity with an opposite absurdity is a brilliant(and fun) way to bring attention to and provide some modicum of solution to that serious problem.
@@RyanTravis23 that’s facts but it is what it is now. It’s said it hurt Macklemore tho. I think it really bothered him especially with the hate he was getting
I always took the song as "find your own style and rock it". A trend doesn't have to define what'll make a fly get up, but you _do_ have to have some style to pull it off.
Macklemore gets pigeon-holed a lot as a "fun" rapper, and because of that people don't bother exploring his other work. However, "Otherside", "Starting Over", and "Neon Cathedral" show a whole different side of the artist.
When you listened to "Leaving Heaven" and the "while Macklemore was keeping his room nice and neat" line went by you because you didn't know who it was, I was PRAYING you would check him out. If you want reference to that line in Em's song, check out "Same Love". Love your reactions. ❤
It is so incredibly odd watching back in 2012 right before he blew up off this record. I was so happy for the dude just knowing he likely never write this record to spawn as many hits as it did. I think if he never won that Grammy we still might see him around a bit more but man just to see him bubble and shoot to stardom, this song is so reminiscent of early ‘10s it’s a shame he had nowhere to go but down after this
I literally went line by line of Bad Touch with my teen so he could understand the level of pop culture references that mean nothing if you didn't grow up in the 80s/90s. And of course, sex. Lol
This reaction is truly one of the best from any song I have ever seen. Your my personal favorite reactor now with out question. Keep up the amazing work and vids bro. Truly amazing and appreciated.
You should do the Pentatonix cover 😆 They changed a LOT of lyrics, obviously, and it's amazing. It's one of their "couch" videos from 2013, though there's also a video of them singing it into a PA system at an airport just for fun.
I. Love. This. Song! When my son was little this would always be on the radio when we were in the car, so then we would have to stop by the thrift store and take a look around. Good times and great memories!
Damn I haven't heard this in years. That's exactly what this song did too 😂. I never liked Macklemore, but anytime I heard this song play on the radio, I catch myself randomly singing the chorus throughout the day.
"Wings" is a super dope song from him. Personally, it's my favourite from him. If you're looking for more of a club banger, you should listen to "Can't Hold Us"
I used to go to the Value Village this video was filmed in. It no longer exists, but it was great back in the day. I also knew Mary Lambert, the singer on Same Love, before she was famous. One of the best poets I've ever encountered. I'm glad she's gotten to follow her dreams.
What makes this song so good is that Maclemore is telling us to do our own thing. To think, be creative and to decide for ourselves what is “dope”. Also, to reject blind consumerism. The lesson extends far beyond clothes.
There is no way you didn’t hear this song before like wow, it was arguably song of 2012 and won so many Grammies along side the album, this song even lasted through 2013 as well for like 2 years because it was so big, I remember everyone singing random parts of the song cuz it was stuck in everyone’s head and everyone would joke around like at school, “ayo, you got 20 bucks!” “I’m gonna pop some tax!!” “Haha only 20 dollars in my pocket” and shit like that like wow this song was ginormous
Wanz has a super interesting story (the hook). He was working as an IT consultant when this song was recorded. Then he could quit his job and follow his music dreams.
Thank you for using the uncensored version when reacting. Censored versions take away from the raw feelings that the artist is trying to convey in their music.
LOVE Macklemore and Ryan Lewis! So underrated and great band too. Plus, they said FU to the record companies and did it all themselves. The humor is awesome too!
This song made me laugh my ass off when it came out. My son was in the 3rd grade and I remember driving him to school jamming to this. Thanks for the memory. 🤪
Sir, I've been watching you for a hot minute now. I must say you've got to be in my top 3 reactors. Your voice, vocabulary and knowledge of music is impeccable. I recommend downtown next. Have a great week!
What do I love about this song? Everything! Lyrics are fire, several different hooks going on, the music/beats build and keep throwing different things in there, and I love songs that use comedy to make a point.
This was THE song that put Macklemore on the mainstream map. I remember it played on EVERY station and you couldn't go 30 minutes without hearing it at least once. I have a lot more favorite Macklemore songs now but that one it so catchy I just have to listen to it every once in awhile.
THRIFT SHOP - over 1.5 Billion (not million, but Billion) hits on RU-vid - I live in Seattle and hit all those thrift shops but never thought I would hear a song about them until Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came along with that infectious beat. lol
