I think you'll like the live version even more. For some reason I thought you already reacted to it, but I guess I was wrong. The whole album is in this style but it's also very eclectic. Uptempos, ballads, novelty songs. Even "Vogue" is on there. It was inspired by the film, which she co-starred as Dick Tracy's object of affection (spoiler: he also a had a fiancé in the film!). It's actually a great movie. It was a big blockbuster hit in 1990. If you want to see her do more in this style, check out her 1993 live performance of "Fever" from Arsenio Hall. She did a house/pop version on her Erotica album and only sang it the traditional jazz way once and it was great. She's also done a few jazz-inspired songs on her tours over the years.

She made an album to coincide with the period the movie was set in. It was received well by critics but wasn’t a huge commercial success because this wasn’t the Madonna fans were accustomed to. A very nice reaction, and I like your takes on the song. She did appear in the movie and in fact, played the lead role among Warren Beatty. The whole album is a throwback vibe I think to 30s and 40s music, except the last song on the album which was Vogue. Even though somehow that song always feels to me it belongs to the album, even it being a dance floor anthem. Sooner or Later and the album as a whole I think took people by surprise, her vocals were so powerful and people didn’t espect that from her. The Oscars performance is one of the best award show performances ever.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this but she started dating Warren Beatty during Dick Tracy and you can see him in the documentary Truth or Dare which was a behind the scenes doc on the making of her Blonde Ambition Tour. He was very self-conscious of being filmed and generally all the hoopla surrounding Madonna and her fame and that played into their break-up. That tour featured Hanky Panky, another little naughty song from that album.

Not for nothing the standards sound book legacy has accumulated a marvelous list of XX century treasures, including the long tradition of musicals. Then at the 80s, it happened at music releases; Alyson Moyet swept the world charts with the amusing "That ole devil thing call Love" (1985) single. That 1990's Red Hot & Blue compilation gathered famous acts of the time (U2, David Byrne, etc), however surprisingly reunited who we now know are some of the greatest voices of all time, doing the Jazz Swing so notably that the cited Dick Tracy's album and Madonna's "Sooner or Later" even at the Oscars, despite being good, cannot touch them. Yes, Sinéad O'Connor on "You Do Something To Me", Annie Lennox with "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye", Lisa Stansfield going "Down In The Depths" and Jody Watley asking "After You" (who?)... Then K.D. Lang (and all musicians and people at this recording) gets to earn all crowns with here rendition of "So In Love", doing it so deep and so high, as to accomplish a very lone peak, hard to come even far to it. One has to switch genres and styles to get at par. It is such good. Once such music was out, it is for us all to dive in, thankfully.
