Mary is one of the realest artists out here! She’s brutally honest in her lyrics and you feel her pain when she sings. Check out her song “My life”! I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Yes that song means so much to her because she had loads of drama, molested as a child, used drugs, bad relationships with men… Also the last line that she sang on the live version, is because the industry (Grammys) took a while to recognise her work.

To add to this Mary’s own mother kicked her out of the house at 15 years old and Mary said she lived with friends and neighbors for a while and she Stopped going to school she Dropped out of High school at 15-16 years old and her Father left the family when she was 3-4 and her mother had to work & would have to leave her children with friends and one of her mothers family friends a man molested her at just 4 years old and she never told her mother until a few years ago.

I forgot what year she finally told her mother she was molested , but her mother asked Mary why didn’t she not tell her & Mary’s response was she was scared that her mother would go to prison for killing the man who molested her and her mother was like that’s true i would have probably found him & killed him for doing something like that to my child who was defenseless and helpless and innocent, years later when Mary found her Father his response was the same as her mothers but he was like he wanted to actually take Mary with him when he divorced her mother but her mother fought him in court to keep all the children and then she moved to another side of NY with the kids and he completely lost all contacts to them and it wasn’t until Mary & her siblings grown that she found him and he told her that he was sorry for leaving her & that he tried fighting for full custody of her but the court ruled favoring the mother and he lost full custody as well as visitations due to a old drug arrest case that Mary J Blige’s mother put into her court case documents basically making it not possible for him to get Mary . Mary dad told her that if he had known that she was abused, he would have tried to get Custody of her .

There is not a person that was around when Mary J. Blige came out with this song that did not FEEL it and love it. She has always been and still is absolutely amazing. Coming from an old head but I do not care, it's still fire.

Some historical context: Mary J had just broken a very long pattern of addiction and this song was her statement. Furthermore, this was on the tail of 9/11 and the drums of war were already starting to sound across America. Mary was processing a lot on this stage.

Also one thing I forgot this was a message to the grammy voters as well. Mary had been in the game making some of the best music ever and it had been 10 years at this point and they only gave her one grammy and after this you notice in the next 4 years it jumps from 1 to 9. She put them on blast because she started so much of the music we listen to today but wasnt getting credit. the neo soul and the hip hop mixed with r&b was mary. You look at the 80's it was straight rap or straight r&b they were separate. Mary came and changed all of that r&b and hip hop became like one. mary means more than a lot of youngins realize. You know you something when music completely change when you arrive.

Ya'll definitely have to check out her catalog from the 90s. Mary is criminally underrated. At least nowadays. Back then her songs were played on rotation non-stop on the radio. Especially if you lived in the NY area. 'Real Love' ft. Biggie, 'I'm Going Down', 'Reminisce' (remix), 'I Can Love You' with Lil Kim, 'My Everything', 'You're all I need' ft. Method Man (her most famous song of the 90s). Hit after hit after hit after hit. I saw some comments from the halftime show with people saying they had no idea who she was. She's the queen of hip-hop soul. There's a reason she was on that stage... she's as big of a legend as the rest of them.

Facts : in 2001 When this song came out Mary J Blige had lost friends in the industry including Singer Aaliyah and another friend & Mary J herself claimed during this time she had a awakening in her house in her bedroom were she thought she was next to die this was when she claimed she was out of control with Drugs and Drinking alcohol.

Mary J had a rough childhood she was sexually abused, started using drugs as a teenager, been in domestic violence relationships & married someone who used her & took almost everything from her. She struggled & went through some serious shit.
