Who Can It Be Now, Dr Hekyll and Mr Jive, Its a Mistake, Overkill are also great songs from Men At Work Men At Work is from " the land down under" Australia
Another band from Australia is Midnight Oil they were very interesting too mostly about social consciousness and the mistreatment of the Aboriginal people. One of the best songs they did was Beds Are Burning
Regarding Midnight Oil: That entire album is fire. I mean it: Diesel and Dust ( the entire album) is a must-listen! I believe you will love it and learn of it: the land down under. But I will readily (though perhaps sadly) admit that I've never been. The stories, though, so powerful, it's the stories!
I had a friend that said he liked Midnight Oil before they got political. I asked him when they weren't political :-D I believe the first song of theirs I heard was Power And The Passion or Read About It.
@@mangerinegirl I wrote Be Good Johnny on my list. I love that song! I might have said nah nah nah a few times in my life. Maybe if u post Be Good Johnny not just as a response to blue 22 there's a better chance it'll get played??
These guys were very big in the 80s and loved their carefree antics. Olivia Newton-John and ACDC are other big names from Australia back then. Loved them all.
Hey, Jayy, I found some info that might add to your opinion of this song... Vegemite ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite ) ... The lyric: "Where women glow and men plunder" references women who work hard enough to really sweat while the men are probably causing trouble.
Sorry late to the party! I was having a "discussion" with the weeds in my garden, but, I'm here now!! Let's do this!! I Love Men At Work!!! This song was SO much fun back in the day.... at 11 y/o, we had no idea what they were talking about, but it didn't matter... it's just a such a fun little jam...
Yeah you know it's funny because he Europe in the northern area so the concept of it being on the top when I actually it could be the bottom cuz it's only a concept just like the direction we go around the Sun even though it seems like it's horizontal we're actually going vertical if you look at all the positioning yeah I love these groups from Australia Men Without Hats Midnight Oil they've got some really great stuff yeah I 80s what a wonderful time no looking back
I have heard several Australians describe the meaning of the song as I'm Australian (and proud of it). Australia is approximately 1,727 miles south of the equator line while the United States is approximately 2,747 mile north of the equator. Another way to look at it is to use Antarctica (South Pole) as base: The United Kingdom is (roughly) 10,163 miles away The United States is (roughly) 9,072 miles away Australia is (roughly) 4,502 miles away (although closest countries to Antarctica are Chile and Argentina at roughly 3521 miles away) One last tidbit : Although 'down under' was more of a European/British term originally to denote the land being down under most of the lands one the map (along with New Zealand and some of the island nations), the Australians took this ownership of this term and made it a distinctive nickname that occasionally overshadows the actual name of the country in (media) use. This song also helped to make 'down under' a rally cry/call, more or less.
I loved Men At Work as a teen. I still have this album on vinyl. This song was the unofficial Australian national anthem for a lot of years, so much so that it became cliche. Wow, this tune brings back memories.
Good on ya, you got Men at Work! My fiance is an Aussie.. We plan on moving down under first chance we get. He's seen enough of my country, now it's time for me to see his! Men at work are Australian icons. "Who Can It Be Now" is another gr8 one. You need to try Vegemite and the Tim Tam cookies are to die for. Oi oi oi!
Check out Colin Hay "You Saved Me From Myself" and "Maggie". He was the lead singer of Men at Work. His voice is still Awesome!!! Also check out Men at Work "Overkill", "It's a Mistake", "Johnny Be Good". RIP Greg Ham (4/20/2012) Miss your flute and sax playing.
Mental As Anything - Live It Up is an awesome tune. It featured in the 80s film Crocodile Dundee. INXS are also another great band from Australia, a song featured in the Cult movie Lost Boys, with Jimmy Barnes - Good Times the track is awesome. Obviously, they had loads of hits. But as ever, nothing tops AC/DC.
Love, love Men At Work. I remember when their first album came out, I was so excited that such a sound was on the radio. It was so different from anything on the airwaves back then. Thanks for your reaction, Jayy. Took me back in time. Take care and be well. Peace.
Yes, these guys are Aussie's!! My dream destination!! ;) Vegemite sandwiches are apparently big in Australia, but to this day, I have NO idea what vegemite is!! It's just fun to sing!! Men at Work also have another good song "Who Can It Be Now".... think you'd like that one too!!
@@elysehfm8797 Hahaha!! That's what u get when you're trying get a 👑 on every reaction!! 😂😃 And EWW, if that's what Vegemite and Marmite (never heard of it) then they can keep it too themselves!!🙄😂😁
This song and music video make me feel like Australia is exactly like this and regardless of reality (don't spoil it for me, haha), I hope it's like this and always will be..which it will be until I ever go there..which may be a reason why I shouldn't. It's sorta like never meet your heroes...I just want Australia to be the Mad Max Dundee Walkabout outback of my dreams. Is that too much to ask?
This was a geat Australian hit back in1983. Still popular and regularly played on local radio. Incidently, the thumbs downs are from Aussies, because they're UPSIDE DOWN!! LOL
I love you people from Oz... But Vegamite is fucking VILE AS SHIT! haha! 😁 I tried it when I was in Queensland... (I pretty much HAD to) and I can't even understand how you drink good beers and eat THAT shit! Haha! It WAS an awesome weekend, though!!!
Haha, did you get the line about "a Vegemite sandwich"?. Vegemite is Australia's favourite spread. More suggestions, "Overkill" and "Who could it be now". Colin Hay, lead singer is actually Scottish
WOW!!! Another great old Jayy!!! Back in the early eighties these guys had a lot of hits in a short amount of time and then they just kind of went away. They did a song called Overkill that I really used to like. But they've got a lot of good hits you might like to listen to.. another great reaction keep smiling Bright eyes and we'll see you on the next one
Other huge Aussie artists; Midnight Oil, "Power and the Passion", "Dead Heart"( official video). It's a song about Australia's indigenous people. You must do, John Farnham, You're the voice (official video), and Help with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. This is a Beatles cover. John is an Aussie icon and was voted King of Pop here twice in the 70s. Silverchair, "Tomorrow". They were only 16 when they had a hit with this song. A bit of a Nirvana grunge sound
Sadly the flutist was sued for copyright, for playing of a traditional children's tune. He was devastated by this, and passed away, from a heart attack in 2019. RIP Greg Ham
I love that you have been listening to the soundtrack of my teen years. Cyndi Lauper. Eddie Van Halen. Now this.Yiu should watch The Breakfast Club! Thanks so much!
More Aussie! Big Pig 'Break Away' and John Farnham 'You're the Voice'. The flute riff is from the song 'Kookaburra', which I had always assumed was some old, traditional song in the public domain (probably the band thought the same) but in fact was written by an extant person, who later sued the band.
Great reaction, Jayy. Yes, like everyone else commented; Australia is where they're from and the reference in the song. Two giveaways were the FOSTER'S beer cans being opened by the tall guy (6'4" and full of muscles) and the vegemite sandwich lyric in the same part of the song. The food is a staple in Australia.
Please check out Level 42. The live 30th Anniversary concert of the song "Almost There " . Level 42 is one of most incredible brit funk bands ever. You will be impressed.
Too bad you missed out on the 1980's. It was a great time for music and there were never be anything like it again. Just like the iconic 1950's, 1960's and 1970's they were all good years. I wonder if we will look back on the 2020's 40 years from now and be thinking the same thing?
My favorite memory of this song was during the 1983 America's Cup in Newport when the Australians would trail their boat down to the launch with about 500 supporters cranking this song and partying in a parade behind the boat
You definitely need to look up the lyrics even though of course some of them are in Aussie slang. Right off the bat: “traveling in a fried out Combie, on a hippie trail, head full of zombie...” That old VW bus is the fried out Combie, of course zombie is weed. And of course, “he just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich!”
Okay heres a few obsucre references that only make sense if you know slang or more obscure Australian things Kombi - Is the VW van you can see Zombi - Was a type of strong weed The flute line is a version of "Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gumtree" everyone has probably heard a Kookaburra, it's a bird who sounds like it's laughing and the noise has been used as a sound effect in films about jungles forever despite Kookaburras never having seen a jungle in their lil feathered lives. Vegemite - Is a drak brown salty spread that you put on things like toasts and sandwiches - it was originally a by-product of beer production The Man from Brussels hits the sandwich away using a handball motion from the sport Aussie Rules Football Chunder = Vomit So Where rivers Flow and Men Chunder is almost certainly a joke about Toilets where rivers of urine and vomit occur after a drinking binge Den in Bombay - is a drug reference to an opium den The Man attempts to steal or tempt Colin with of all things a Dunlop Volley Tennis Shoe - it was the cheapest show imaginable but very practical for the beach. When this song came out most every Australian would have owned one or more pair of these
How cool is the line " Where beer does flow and men chunder"! For those not from Australia .. Chunder means to throw up or barf ... meaning that we drink lots (too much) of beer in Australia !! Ha
"Down under" is Australia...and it is called that way to express that it is located on the other side of the globe from an "England´s point of view" basically what was meant respectively the saying was that when you start digging from England straight through the earth crust and you dig and dig further and further then you will come out in Australia..therefore the british colony Australia was so to say located "down under" England... at least so was the saying back then as that "down under" for Australia came up..
Men at Work owned the fucking world for a hot minute in the early to mid '80s. This song as well as Who Can it Be Now? as well as Overkill (please do that one) as well as It's a Mistake.
Growing up this was my “first favorite band”. I remember nervously asking my mom if I could have their cassette. My parents were pretty conservative, listened to Country and every Sunday Lawrence Welk. I don’t remember how old I was... maybe 10. It was my first time asking for a cassette. They had given me cassettes of Eddie Rabbit and a few other country artists but this was when I branched to pop. Sort of a coming of age moment😉
Colin Hay is the lead singer and song writer. Can I suggest, for your own enjoyment, you seek out and listen to some of his solo stuff. May not be appropriate for reaction, but he is very good.
@@michaelrush3403 first that it's a privilege to have been friends with the guy, he wrote this song for them and then my condolences for the loss, guy.R.I.P.
This song puts a smile on my face every time I hear it. I remember hearing this song for the first time in music class around 1989. A fond memory for a kid to have.
