Not only is it about drugs but the songs structure is also intentional. the fast intense hard beginning represents the anticipation of getting high. thinking about it running around to find it. the 2nd part slow amazing solo is THE high and the users euphoria. the 3rd part fast again is the come down ,regret and realization you gotta do it all over again.

As a Metallica fan, the lyrics of this song are what make it such a masterpiece. There are 3 parts to this song the beginning where the drugs are convincing the man to take more drugs as if that is all he needs. As if drugs would solve all his issues. The man knows he's already not doing well but trusts the drug's false promises. In the middle of the song, the slow part is the high that the drug is giving the man. This leads to the end of the slow part showing the man coming out of the high leading to the crash afterwards. While coming out of the high into the crash the man is begging for more drugs as that is all he knows how to do at this point and asks the drugs to "fix me" and the drug claims its victory on the man with laughter. The man realizes that the Drugs lied to him and that it's really just taking away his dreams, and future. The last part is where the man is now too far into his addiction and the Drugs, his Master, is controlling his entire life like a Puppet Master. At this point the man is so far in that his life has become a living hell and he's now doing drugs for breakfast and the drugs now occupy and rule over his life. It's just a story of personified Drugs talking to man, and the progression of man's addiction.

Chop your breakfast on a mirror is usually a give away, but here it is. The song is coming from the perspective of an addiction. I always said it was specifically about cocaine, but after years of being browbeaten mercilessly over it, it can be any addiction. The addiction `is` the master of puppets. "Blinded by me you can't see a thing. Just call my name cuz I'll hear you scream. Master! Master!" It's as if your addiction is mocking you. Then the slow breakdown and the perspective changes to the addict. "Master! Master! Where's the dreams that I've been after. Master! Master! Promised only lies. Laughter, laughter, all I see or hear is laughter. Laughter! Laughter! laughing at my cry...Fix me!" (nice little double meaning. `Fix` as in make me better and `fix` as in, give me my `fix`.) and finally "Never-ending maze, drift on numbered days. Now your life is out of season" It ends with the addiction completely taking over and the addicts inevitable death. Dark, but poignant. Anyone who has ever battled addiction can easily relate.

It’s about addiction. Drugs are mentioned ( needlework the way, shooting up. Chop your breakfast-Cocaine,also alcohol (sucking darkest clear). It’s set as the addiction speaking to the user(puppet). Melodically it’s fast and frenetic just like needing the fix, then you get the slow melodic middle (getting the fix ). And then the inevitable need to get high again. Also in my opinion at the end is the addiction getting the last laugh and the puppet dying.
