This song is based on a book/movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It’s about a soldier who was drafted into WW1 and accidentally steps on a landmine and he gets blown up. He lost his arms, legs, sight, hearing and ability to speak. But he is still cognizant in his mind. This whole song is sung from the soldiers perspective and how it’s an absolute hell to be only able to lie there in darkness and your thoughts
You can get the audiobook of the original novel for free if you are and Audible Plus member. It's a hard listen. I stopped half way through. It isn't bad, far from it. It's a hard thing to hear. Very well performed.
@@KeyMoveMedia yeah totally , he's laying there twitching Morse Code and to the timing of the music , it completely looks like he's Head-Banging - Metallica forever y'all 🤘😸🤘
As a Armed Forces Veteran... this song has more meaning than you will ever know.. it is an anthem.. it is the only song that truly captures the horrors of battle. It is heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time.. the video definitely does the song justice.
Another good song that captures the horrors of battle is '1914 - The Hundred Days Offensive'. If you're into a bit heavier type of metal, I'd recommend to take a listen.
First as a yank across the pond let me welcome you to the legends that are metallica. These guys are now in their sixties and still selling out stadiums and arenas around the world. Second I've been to twenty-one of their shows spanning forty years and not once was I ever disappointed. Third react to "fade to black" I would suggest looking up the meaning of their songs on google, it will take your reactions to the next level. As a disabled army veteran this song "one" hits hard. Thanks for a great reaction mate! Peace from America.
When and where was the first time you went to a Metallica show, I've seen them 9 times from the late 80s until now, the latest being Download Donnington this year?
Yes but the Seattle show I got my two front teeth knocked out going crazy in the .osh bit. Happened during battery, it wasn't intentional just what can happen in the pit. I remember just l.m.a.o. with blood dripping everywhere. 😂😂😂😂
@scottpritchardthep.i.t.1436 I would of loved to have been at those gigs. did you find your teeth 🤣?I broke my foot in the Metallica mosh pit at Reading festival 2015 2nd song which was Bells , stayed in until the end though, also got a nice black eye from an unintentional headbutt in a small mosh pit this year during Puppets🤕🤣
Your reaction to these Metallica songs is similar to my ten year old's reaction. When I show him the music I like to listen to, he's amazed. He's growing up in an era where most music is over produced, techno at its core, and unfeeling. Everything happens in cycles, and I think to the generation that has grown up with today's music, this type of music is like a breath of fresh air. I remember discovering an oldies station on the radio when I was kid. They were playing rock 'n roll from the 70's, and that guitar work just blew me away! Then I discovered Metallica and it was all over. That was it. MY BAND.
I love your reactions to Metallica. Every one of their songs has a meaning whether deep or not. You will always find something you can relate to in one or more of their songs. 'One' is inspired by the 1939 book Johnny Got His Gun and is about a WW1 soldier. He wakes up a prisoner in his own body after losing his arms, legs, senses etc therefore cannot speak etc. A very deep and powerful song. Welcome to the Metallica family ❤
It's in the lyrics" Landmine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing, taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul, left me with life in hell" Helloween Eagle Fly Free, studio version.
This was when the music meant something to Them and to Us. You can hear the Heart these songs have. It's not anger, it's Passion for the music and the message conveyed..
The song is about a soldier who got hit by a missile or activated a landmine and basically had his legs arms and face blown off. They kept him on the machines, just a body stump without any limbs. He was in his own private hell but he could not express himself except doing a morse code with parts of his body to the bed. Its based on the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" which is an anti-war fiction inspired by TRUE and gruiesome story of one canadian that ended up in World War I.
I'm a 50 yr old who was a hip hop head and break dancer in the 80s. The heaviest bands I listened to back then was ozzy/priest/maiden...a friend of mine swapped cassettes in my walkman, thinking I was gonna be listening to RUN D.M.C., the intro to MASTER OF PUPPETS blasted my ears, and I've been a huge metalhead ever since! Still a hip hop head, and lover of all music, but, Metallica/thrash/heavy metal will forever be my passion. New tonyour channel. Subbed automatically.
People are often surprised by how much metalheads and hip hop fans appreciate each others genres but I think back in the 90s there was a bunch of us who just loved anything with a "PARENTAL ADVISORY" label on it
@daved2352 definitely. The PMRC didn't realize that that sticker boosted sales and did more for promotions than any ads in a magazine. Younsaw the sticker, and had to check out what was inside
After Metallica promised us for years, they would never do a video, they turn around and make the two best! That’s breaking a promise, with a wrecking ball!! 🤣🤣🤣
Metallica fan. Have the Justice album on tattooed on my arm- but Thriller was the better video in the day. This was the song and video that had me following MetallicA.
I was always disappointed that they don’t have the music video version on Spotify or the album, it adds so much it’s insane. I finally ended up just downloading the audio and saving it to my library because it’s already a masterpiece but the added audio from the film really elevates it.
The cover on his fave is because when the bomb went off it not only took his arms and legs it took parts of his face, so the mask protects his injuries from the elements around him it hides them. He can't speak because of the airway he has in, which is what she pinches off to end his suffering and let's him die. The video is about being trapped inside of yourself and not being able to do anything to fix it, so he wanted to die to end all the pain he felt that they thought he didn't. I hope that helps, and welcome to the world of Metallica, one of the best heavy metal bands of all time.
Dude, Metal is such a rich and diverse music form - you have such an abundance of amazing bands to discover as you continue to evolve into a Metalhead 🤘
This was Metallica's first foray into video. They reluctantly agreed to finally make a video after years of refusing. They were so anti establishment in every way, and didn't see the need for a video. But I am so glad they did.
To me, this is one of the heaviest, and most beautiful, songs in Metal. Being a Vet, this song really hits home. I do it for karaoke, on occasion. It's very therapeutic.
Another great reaction friend. Some fun facts about this song: - It's based off an old movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" which is based off a true story. The details are tragic. - This was their first ever music video and it remains, to this day, one of the most powerful pieces of art ever recorded. - This led to them being invited to play this at the Grammy's. First metal band ever. The performance was an emotional roller coaster going from nervous wrecks to legends. - And Justice For All was the first album recorded with new bassist Jason Newstead, replacing Cliff Burton who was tragically killed in a bus accident. The bass on this album was internationally nerfed, which was indicitive of a level of treatment that would ultimately lead to Newstead quitting the band a little over a decade later. Thanks for the video friend. On to Fade 2 Black 🍻🍻
Metal, punk, and rap are so closely related. We all respect the underlying truth. I love that channels like this are exposing the angst that we all feel and relate to. We are the same humans that can't stand the hurt that the unemphatic refuse to acknowledge.
For whom the bell tolls next!!! Definitely watch the songs you've already reacted to LIVE....it will blow you away. Seattle 89 is my suggestion...prepare yourself!!!
This is Metallica's first music video in a music commercial from the previous three albums which there were no video clips from the previous three albums and this song was the top clip on MTV at that time.
I can't count the number of times I've seen this video and it still makes me cry every time. Metallica took an old movie and and old story and turned it into absolute art.
So Beautiful 💯🤘 This song so special 😊 and it goes hard 🤘💯🎸🦾 I seen Metallica many times and I'm going again this year in August in Chicago 🇺🇲 Can't wait! Love them😊 Love your channel and your reactions and you 🎧💯 Rock on and Rock hard 🤘🎧💯 God Bless you and yours 🙏
After seeing this video I searched everywhere for the movie. Finally found it, watched it crying myself into a migraine, and never watched it again. I don't think I could read the book.
Creeping death, Whiplash, disposable heroes, leper messiah check these out of you can. I envy you for experiencing this for the first time. Seeing your reaction brings back memories of me first hearing them. What's even better is seeing them live. What an experience!!
Metallica will take you to musical levels you’ve never known existed 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘….from 1983 to this year releasing albums forcing the World to stop rotating in order to digest these guys otherworldly talents 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘. I have seen them live 18 times…..a lot of people will argue Metallica is the best live band out there….several times crowned to be the best 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘😍
This song was based on a book called Jonny get your gun . An anti-war story about aman going to war and coming back with no arms, legs or face. And the government kept him alive in the hospital. While his family was told that he died.
"One" was my introduction to Metallica. I believe it was the first Official Music video they ever did and I seen the premier on MTv back in the 80's. Been hooked ever since. I had to go buy the And Justice For All album and wore it out. It is still one of my top favorite albums.
Still have the video tape from the day this debut on MTv, i will never get rid of that one. they swore they would never shoot a video that wasn't concert footage, and they go and make IMHO the best video ever made, that actually follows the story of the song perfectly. such a powerful song. Loved seeing it live on the ...and Justice for All tour.
Have seen Metallica several times in concert. They are just amazing performing live. Even won a contest to be in their "Snake Pit" which was in the middle of the stage during the Black Tour. What an experience.
My first concert ever was Metallica,in Halifax, N.S.It was the justice tour, and I was 17.Recently turned 50.Thanks my boy for reminding of this experience. Cheers
For the love of Christ man, please do the official video of Nothing Else Matters. You'll see some behind the scenes studio recording of the making of one of the most icons songs in history a MASTERPIECE, since guitar playing gives you the chills, you'll literally be one big goose bump after ...... I can't wait to watch ans subscribe .....
This was my first Metallica experience seeing this video on MTV in my teenage years, many years ago. Few songs have ever impacted me harder, the definition of living Hell. Now 30 years later as a Veteran who has fought in a war I am truly grateful for not having such a fate. ❤
This music video is part song, part mini movie. The song on the album doesn't have the dialog from the movie that basically tells the story of a soldier who was injured during combat and would rather die than live another day.
One of the most ingenious and heartbreaking pairings of song/video you'll ever experience. On its own, the song is unmistakably legendary - but as a soundtrack to such an emotionally unimaginable horror, it's almost too much to take.
Probably the best instrumental metal song I have heard. Absolutely love it. Taking my son to his first concert ever in a couple weeks - Metallica in Detroit. Being ~3 hours away, we can’t go to both shows, but hoping they play at least one of: One, Orion, Fade to Black or Welcome Home for this long time Metallica fan.
@@markleistner1924 from what I heard second night had the best setlist, with whiplash, ride the lightning, one, sanitarium, for whole the bell tolls, and the unforgiven
The version with out all the commentary and back ground stuff is so much better, however, this one puts a lot more into the context of what the song is about, really loving your channel bud, not just for the music, your reaction, but mainly for the memories it brings back..........As far as I know the song is about a soldier who suffers catastophic injuries. Practically dead, but his brain is working. His limbs are gone, he can't see, hear, touch etc, and he knows it, he just wants to die, and wishes for it.......and BTW, welcome to the brotherhood of METAL \\m//
As others have mentioned, the song is inspired by the novel "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo, which was ironically first published on 3 September 1939 (the date the UK and France declared war on Nazi Germany over the invasion of Poland). Trumbo, who wrote the screenplays for such Hollywood classics as Spartacus, Exodus and Papillion also wrote and directed the movie adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun, which is featured heavily in this video. Metallica are in the unusual position of holding the rights to the movie as the fee for buying it was only fractionally more than the licence to use the excerpts in this video and avoided them having to pay future royalties. A 2009 release of the film on DVD in North America actually includes the video for "One". The video went on to win a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" at the 1989 Grammys with Lars somewhat sarcastically thanking Jethro Tull for not releasing anything that year in the bands acceptance speech after somewhat controversially losing to them the previous year in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category for the album ...And Justice For All.
James Hetfield lead singer, guitar, writer of most lyrics. He had a very tortured childhood that haunted him most of his life. Still with him but music, Metallica, and therapy got him through and still killing it at 60 yo. I just saw them in August, for the 15th time live and there is Nothing Nothing comparable to the epic experience of Metallica live Nothing. James older brother told him about the book this movie is based on. James has said that he understood and respected the difference of what war took from this man he also understood what if felt like to be trapped in your body feeling unheard having no voice tortured and in pain he could not express. He expressed that by writing One. James taught himself to play guitar and to this day cannot read music. He is a musical genius and an amazing human because that bad ass MF pours his heart and soul out to us all in the most vulnerable way. Kirk Hammett lead guitar The Ripper, self taught fricken genius wrote riff to Creeping Death when he was SIXTEEN years old. Ranked one of the greatest guitarists of all time rightly so and one of the kindness genuine humble humans on Earth. They have been together since they were 17, over 40 years, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, endless awards, millions sold, Millionaires, give millions to charities, so Talented accomplished so much every right to be big head ego ass holes but it is All about the Music All about the Fans, All about playing Live and giving everyone single person the most incredible literal life changing experience Greatest Bsnd Ever I subscribed because at 53 I am Stoked to see you experiencing them your emotion appreciation respect it is raw and genuine. They are still touring I cannot imagine them ever stopping. Baby you MUST SEE METALLICA LIVE. Make it happen. Also, to get to know them, youtube interviews. They changed my life, got me through life. They will do the same for you ✌️❤️🤘
The look on your face is priceless during the last 2 mins! Congratulations you’re a Metallica fan. Look all you want for something like it you won’t find it. Some bands come close but Hatfield is a genius!
Great song and video. The face covering is there because he has no face due to the landmine, also to help keep it from getting infected. A very sober song and message. No one does it like Metallica.
Digging back into your evolution to the dark side now, having just found your channel not long ago. I'm probably not the first to mention it but this was Metallica's first video. They were very against doing a music video and I'm happy to look back over the decades and acknowledge this was an epic first. Really heavy metal, and especially thrash, was a rough road to getting mainstream attention. MTV was about the only ticket back then, but they weren't playing music like this. Local radio stations, especially college or even HS, were where we heard bands like this on the regular. Word of mouth was still the primary way.
Yes, I was a teenager when Master of Puppets came out and I ordered a bunch of cassettes for the 12 cassettes for a penny they used to do. I just picked it on a whim. I fell in love with Metallica immediately and introduced all my friends and anyone who would listen to it. The next thing you know, Metallica was huge and everyone and their mother was listening to them, especially after this video
