Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man. The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970 (just think about those real estate prices compared to now!). Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused. Peace out.

I had the privilege of seeing Neil Young & Crazy Horse live in 1976 when I was 16 years old. The first half of the show was Neil Young with his acoustic guitar, Banjo and harmonica. The 2nd half of the show he came out with Crazy Horse and rocked the sh*t out of the place. Still one of the best concerts I've ever been to and I've been to a lot of concerts.

I've seen Neil 12 times. First concert was with Crazy Horse in 1987. I was 18 years old. In fact it was my first concert ever. Most of his concerts, that I've seen anyway have been acoustic for the first half. Then rip your face off, full on for the second half. There was only one concert I was not impressed with and that was his Harvest Moon concert. Neil played with Booker T and the MGs and it was great. It was the opening acts that sucked ass. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. They were absolutely horrible live. And I had to sit for over two hours listening to that crap. To this day I still won't listen to anything by them. Maybe their live performances have gotten better ? When I saw them they were both fairly new to the scene. 91 ? 92? Somewhere around there.

Neil Young has a distinctive voice, and songs that will last my lifetime and more. When he was with Crosby Stills Nash and Young, imo, brought out the best in them. His lyrics and music spans from folk * check out Harvest Moon * to straight out rock, joining Pearl Jam to play his classic * Keep on Rockin in the Free World. Look at Eddie Vedder as an artist with a group Pearl Jam, and solo. Eddie absolutely knows what Neal Young is about, and he so respects this amazing artist, who does things his way. He IS his own drummer, not into the celebrity ego scene, that so many feed off of. I love this about him. Rather, as this video shows, he is not into fancy clothes, nor flashing concert settings. He is there simply to sing and play his songs, and puts everything into it. A great artist indeed.

I have loved Neil Young for a very long time and I never knew this was about an old man that worked on his ranch. It probably colors the song for you , hearing it for the first time. Without the explanation, we all just loved the song and the old man applied to any old man, so it is universal, in that respect!

I enjoy watching your reactions and I know you're listening, which brings me a lot of Pure Joy Sometimes. Canadian here, eh? I'm an old Hippy, but not as old as Neil. I started music lessons in 1965 at 5 years old. Both my parents played music. My Mother's influence was country, folk, honky tonk, traditional. My Fathers influence was Jazz, Blues, Big Band, the Crooners the Singers, Dancers. Black and White, Hollywood Musicals. I have a huge appreciation for what I think of as country/folk/rock which Neil Young is the Master of All. Sometimes altogether, or different combinations of them. He's for real, sincere, cares a lot, and doesn't give shit what people think of him. He's political and outspoken, he has pissed off a many, but History has proven him to be right most of the time, and way ahead of the curve. My wife and I saw Neil on his Rebel Tour a few years ago. His touring band was 4, 20 something young dudes, called; The Promise of the Real, with two members being Willy Nelson's Sons. The Whole Concert was the Heavy, Grunge Rock Neil, from over the decades of his career. After 13 years of music lessons from 1965 to 1978 , I also was captured by Progressive Rock, and played in a progrock band for 4 years in the 1980's. I love both kinds of "music genres." ✌🇨🇦🤝🌎 🎶 My mention for a Neil Young Song, would be Pocahontas. A progrock request would be one many of your listeners would enjoy but likely haven't heard, called; Music of the Spheres by the band Argent, from their Nexus Album. There's a good Audio version on RU-vid with the most views.

Neil Young's "Unknown Legend" from 1993's "Harvest Moon" has a great feel to it. Appreciate your reaction to this classic and unique voice! 🙂❤

I love young, and his music. Always have. He is truly unique, in the sense that crosby stills and nash could never lock him down to a commitment, he always played for his own music.

What you said, about Young's sounding wise...you hit on the essence of all his songs. I never realized that description wraps it up.

No…😂😂😂😂😂 I subjected my sons to every kind of music I could. Just turned 68, and this song I think was from the late 60s. I see you listening to songs with words that take you away from here, and into your mind where you can think. Our generation was so so very fortunate. Music just fills my soul……brings me to a place in time I can remember. ❤❤❤❤

Essential artist for my 65 years. So much more than a guitar god. In “Ambulance Blues” 2 great lines “I never knew a man who could tell so many lies. He has a different for every set of eyes. How can he remember who he’s talking to. But I know it isn’t me, and I hope it isn’t you.” “You’re all just pissin in the wind. You don’t know it, but you are, and there ain’t nothing like a friend that’ll tell when you’re just pissing in the wind.” Written when he was 24. Perhaps not for this show, but a brilliant song.

That was a very youthful Neil Young! I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't really care for Neil Young's voice, however I do appreciate his songwriting, and this is my favorite song he sings. I do like his work with Crosby, Stills & Young. Those four were magic.

One of my all time Neil Young favourites is Words (Between the Lines of Age). A listenable masterpiece in lyrics and music that foreshadowed punk in many ways.

This is folk music. I read somewhere that he wrote this song for his dad. His dad used to be a news caster. Neil Young one of my favs. When this song came out I was 15 years old in the 70s. God do I ever miss those good old days. It used to be so much simpler and easier going. If there's such a thing as reincarnation I don't want to come back to this world.

I have a little Bose speaker that pairs with my Spotify & I play my tunes in the shower & I sing to my songs. Neil Young “gold rush “ was a cassette that I played while on a roadtrip ( a two yr trip) this guy & 3 others were played. The Who also”, Who’s next.” Check out Ry Cooder, “Bop till you drop “ Down in Hollywood , a song I’d recommend. I want to introduce you to some Tangerine Dream. This group is an alternative type of music. Maserati is also an alternative sound. Dave Alvin is an old hippo from the 60’s Califoria. He wrote the theme music for a show about bootlegging in the hills down south. His song is King of California. He has a nice low voice.
