When it's a solo, it's almost always improvised. This includes that piano part too

Corey Henry on synth, and that is Bill Laurence on Piano. I think his solo is the best part of this track as well, perfectly sparse! I would offer to you a track from Bill, Bill Laurence Ready Wednesday (Union Chapel). It's a live cut featuring Michael League on the bass, and Robert 'Sput' Searight on the drums, plus additional musicians. It's tight.

The Clearing is the opening piece of a suite of music, SYLVA, written by Michael League and arranged by Michael and conductor of Metropole Orkest Jules Buckley.

This album this track is from is so nice. EDIT: I think they are improvising, like the structure is already there, but the solo's get improvised. There is some bonus footage from the We Like It Here recording on RU-vid with alternate Lingus versions where Cory Henry plays a completely different synth solo. I think in this case every thing the orchestra is involved with has to be pre-written right?

The song is written and learned by all players beforehand, including the orchestra. They all know when the solos are coming in, and how long they would take (in terms of how many bars they have for the solo). Inside that space, the performers are free to improvise. Also, the orchestra has a conductor, in this case Jules Buckley, who's one of their many functions in "directing" the piece of music is to queue the players in and out at the right time.
