The only song I have ever heard that has a Triangle solo instead of a guitar solo. Peter Gabriel has been changing music, how it is written, recorded and perceived, for over 50 years now. He started with his high school friends in their band, Genesis. On RU-vid people have shared film and video of early-1970s Genesis in concert --- video footage that was not thought to exist at all. May I recommend that you seek out pre-1975 Genesis, for that is the year that Gabriel left the band and drummer Phil Collins took over as lead vocalist, songs like "The Musical Box", "Watcher of the Skies" and their masterpiece, "Supper's Ready", with all of Gabriel's theatrics and mime and costume changes. Good job, Sarah! ----OronOfMontreal
The live video, from his concert recorded in Athens 1987, moved me to tears when I attended that show in Montreal and in Ottawa. It is available for you to see, on RU-vid. --OronOfMontreal
Wow, thank you so much, Sarah! I did'nt expect you to listen to my suggestion so quick! I'm happy you like the song. It's one of my all time favourites. Love your reaction, too, and I always was hounted by the melody and the beautiful voice of the singer.
Normally I don't comment, but you obviously "get" this masterpiece. So I would like you to enjoy what - in my opinion - are Peter's finest versions: 1. The live version from Athens in 1987. 2. The "William Orbit" remix. And 3. The 9-minute live version from the "So" Tour (I believe). Happy listening. You also might want to check out Peter's cover of "The Power of the Heart" from the 2012 New Blood Tour, "Signal to Noise" from either the early 2000's Growing Up Tours or the Orchestral Version on the aforementioned New Blood Tour, and of course, his ubiquitous cover of Arcade Fire's "My Body is a Cage," also from the 2012 New Blood Tour. I believe these songs will "change your life" in the way only music can. And if you haven't yet discovered "Playing For Change, please do. They have been changing the world with great music for over two decades. Keep up the good work!
The Athens 87 video was shot from the 1986 & 87 "So" tour. Peter's dramatic yet simple use of lighting left me gobsmacked. The lights for this number resembled a couple of big pet dogs, warmly watching over their mistress, suffering in her deadly depression, as portrayed by Peter, writhing in a nightmare on the floor of the stage. So very moving. --OronOfMontreal
