Chuck D is one of the greatest rappers to ever live. A true GOAT. Flav was fun, but he was more of a hype man - like a pro wrestling manager. As a white suburban kid in the 80’s, Public Enemy’s messages influenced me deeply and helped me to form my world views. Views that I still hold today. They taught me all about the damage and pain caused by systemic racism, which had a positive effect on structuring my social values as a young man. These guys still resonate with me to this day.

There are so many good Public Enemy songs. An easy way to decide what to check out is basically any of their songs with an official video. They do have way more good songs than they made videos for, but all the ones with videos are worth checking out for sure. One of the best groups ever.

THAT song was beloved by my crew... when my crew was a bunch of Heavy Metal dudes! 💯 Heavy Metal and Punk Rock kids ADORED Public Enemy!!! 😎 Its the "Fuck THIS" attitude that hit us the same way "our" bands had been hitting us since '77. And all of us locked in IMMEDIATELY! 💯😎

One of the things that really pulled me in to Public Enemy was that it's clear that Chuck is well educated and his words spoke hard truths about our complicated history. The message was necessary then, and it's necessary now.

PE & other hip hop artists in the 90s spoke 100% facts, they were better teachers than our schools, and they trusted all their young listeners to listen and understand, even when it was hard to hear. I miss that.

Yes Sir. Now you're learning dawg. This is why we say the new school is soft, no heart. James Brown said it best. "Talking loud, saying nothing". They only talk about their own... Black awareness is down today. Check out Public Enemy "Black Steel in the hour of chaos" , "Terminator X" , "Super agent" and by the time I get to Arizona " for starters..

Ahem public enemy was my favorite rap group in the 80s and 90s and in the year 3000 will still be my favorite rap group of all times I met Chuck D at a concert in my hometown of Jacksonville Florida in the 80s backstage my cousin was doing security and I asked him about getting on at Def Jam and told me to send a demo of course me and my peeps couldn't come together but I listen to Public Enemy almost every other day mostly it's nostalgia and it gets me crunk for work It takes a nation of millions and fear of a black planet are two of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time

This was the single/video off the album Apocalypse '91 the Enemy Strikes Black. PE's 3 album run with It Takes a Nation of Millions, Fear of a Black Planet, and Apocalypse is one of the best consecutive album runs in music history and definitely hip hop. That said, I didn't think it was as good as the prior two. FWIW, Bring the Noise with Anthtax was the album closer. Tracks to check out from this are: Lost at Birth/Rebirth, By the Time I Get to Arizona, Shur Em Down, A Letter to the NY Post, and Get the F* Outta Dodge.

P.E. Cold Chillin in Effect...P.E. is The Goat. Sadly there's no P.E. in this Disco/Hip Hop today. Yet though we live in what Rock n Roll went through in the 70's with Disco, what was created underneath that was Punk Rock. A rebellion is swelling in underground hip hop, a rebellion tired of the bulls hit Disco Glam/Hip Pop that sold sold out Hip Hop. I may be 48 but I'm excited to see these rebellious Hip Hop bands Strike Back against the willful dumb down of what has been inflicted upon Hip Hop.

Apocalypse 91, The Enemy Strikes Black is one of my favorite records ever. I was 10 when it hit stores. I got it for Christmas 1991. I'm a white 43 y/o male who grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood. Aside from one or two other people, no one listened or cared about Public Enemy where I grew up. Fair enough. Chuck D is one of my idols. Chuck talked about things that I had no idea about. The video for Can't Truss It still gives me cold chills, what, 33 yrs later. Public Enemy is that group you want to listen to, sir. I tried turning people onto them and they said they don't have time for that political, straight forward history lesson rap. My bad, I was under the assumption you were into learning. It is what it is. Please make "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos" the next Public Enemy song you check out. The video version is good, but it cuts out a verse. The 6:24 long album version is the one you want.

Not sure what happened to Hip-Hop but, old school Hip-Hop needs to make a come back. It's was full of stories, history, conciousness, and fun. I miss those days. I don't care about if you have some WAP, selling drugs and murdering your brothers for the Benjamins...ish is WACK!

The media deliberately changed the public face of hip hop by making 2 Live Crew the poster children for everything that is problematic with it. They didn't want the truthtellers like Chuck D and KRS-ONE getting their message out. And then it all became about gangsta rap which besides leading to real violence has made the music a self-parody.

their production crew, the bomb squad (the shockley brothers), were critical to PE's brilliance--only the beastie boys had the same high quality beats and dense punk-inflected production. in fact, beasties and PE are very similar in production styles, if you listen closely.
