I love this when someone who has never heard the music of other generations and eras-particularly 60's up to 90's to understand that yes we were deep and most of our music was telling a reality story within it was when musicians played instruments, wrote there own songs-performed live for years-they worked for the music they put out.

As others have said, "REM" means "rapid eye movement"; that's the stage of sleep in which you dream. There's a dreamlike quality to a lot of their songs. Try their first single, "Radio Free Europe," to get a taste of where they're coming from.

Don’t know if realize that all of the visual imagery references the Old Master paintings in classic figurative art. There is a whole layer of hidden (for most) meaning in plain site here...literally. As a student getting my fine art degree when this released, I spent hrs analyzing the masterpieces to uncover the layers of this performance.

My favourite is "The one I love" which is an 80ties Alternative music classic... "Shiny happy people" is also very nice especially because of the appearance of B52´s singer Kate Pierson with her wonderful voice although for a REM song it has a surprisingly "Happy sound". "What´s the frequency, Kenneth" is also a very catchy tune as well. "Drive" is a deep tune. "Man on the moon" is a smooth ballade "It´s the end of the world" is a statement

Its an Irish expression as in, "Where's Johnny?"" He's over there, losing his religion! "(He lost his temper and he's getting in a fight, like losing his witness). He's losing it, losing his composure, coming apart, etc. A bad breakup is causing him to become unraveled.

I was 15 years old when this song came out and I was about to enter my "Confused Teenager" phase full blast. Singer Michael Stipe turns 61 next Monday. Happy Birthday to him! I met R.E.M. backstage after one of their concerts in 1986. I got their autographs while my buddy talked philosophy with Michael Stipe. For their hits from the 80's, check out "Radio Free Europe", "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)", "Driver 8", "Fall on Me", "The One I Love", "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" and for a few worthy deep cuts from them, check out "Gardening At Night", "7 Chinese Brothers", and "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" among others. But if you really want to turn on the waterworks, check out "Everybody Hurts", their signature songs of the 90's.

Nice guys. Same town where these bands are from: B-52s, Widespread Panic, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Danger Mouse, Drive-by Truckers, Pylon, Azure Ray, Love Tractor, the Glands, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Gresham Disco, Vic Chesnutt, Vigilantes of Love, Bill Malonee, Dreams so Real, Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, Dead Confederate, John Berry... It’s considered the birthplace of Indie music.

You are spot on about it being about the frustration of unrequited love. I think you're the first person I've seen react to this who caught that! The imagery in the music video was purely artistic (beautiful as it is), so it throws a lot of people off, as does the title, which others have said is a slang phrase for losing one's temper. I hope you do listen to more REM, they were my favorite band when I was a teenager and they still have a special place in my heart and playlist. Michael Stipe's voice is magical. Be prepared to get teary if you react to "Everybody Hurts," though.

Michael Stipe didn't want their lyrics printed, preferring meanings to be interpreted according to the listener's experiences & beliefs. When the Net became a thing, I couldn't get enough of an REM fan site where their lyrics were untangled & posted by a slew of people (try shouting along to 'it's the end of the world as we know it' without the actual lyrics, it sucks). I get his point, though, too. The Internet took the matter out of R.E.M.'s hands, and they began providing lyrics in the 00s.

An artist similar to R.E.M that I think you'd love Jayy is David Gray, his songwriting & vocals will reduce anyone to tears inc the one I live, this year's love, Babylon, sail away. I know you have a community post where people can recommend new artists for Mondays but I'm using my tablet cause my phone's a cheap pre-owned & my tablet won't let me access the post cause I'm not on mobile. REM has a very unique voice and this song along with The Great Beyond, Shiny happy people & Everybody Hurts are really deep spiritual file lyrics. Hope you find some time to yourself in 2021 I fear you're gonna burn out soon you seem to be doing a lot of reactions and people need to realise it takes a long time to shoot one reaction Inc filming, edits and style of thumbnail, sorry Jayy just thinking of your well-being ♥️♥️

you hit the NAIL on teh head :) its about "unrequited love" as per an interview with Michael Stipe himself.....its got NOTHING to do with religion...........he is from the Southern US and he said its an expression there where you say" im about to lose my religion" as in lose your cool/temper/go crazy etc! its such a brilliant song - my fav lyric --" consider this, consider this, the HINT of the century, consider this, the SLIP taht brought me to my knees, what if all these fantasies came frailing around, now ive said, too much" its really encapsulates the frustration he was feeling......... without doubt my fav REM song and one of my all time fav songs fullstop! other great songs from them are "Everybody Hurts" + "Shiny Happy People" both very contrasting (you will understand when you listen)!

The phrase “losing my religion” is an expression from the southern region of the US that means losing one’s temper or “at my wit’s end,” meaning as if things were going so bad you could lose your faith in God. “Losing your religion” over a person, could mean that you’re losing faith in that particular person.

Blondie - Rapture, 10,000 Maniacs - What's The Matter Here or These are the Days, The Cardigans - My Favorite Game, INXS - I Need You Tonight. The Flaming Lips need a little introduction. Their first big song was, She Don't Use Jelly and their later hit was Do You Realize. Please watch the Jelly one before the Realize one. It shows how bands and people change over time.
