It’s a song about all the self-examination people do after someone close to them commits suicide. He’s literally haunted by the loss of his best friend and wondering what you could have done different…wondering if he’ll ever escape feelings of grief and guilt.

That's how I see it too. I've needed to listen to it a few times to understand this point of view. I've seen this playing out amongst young men who have lost way too many friends to suicide. There is nothing that can take away the pain for those left behind. Yet Ren has found a way to express this loss in a beautiful, yet haunting piece.

I never thought I'd encounter another piece of music or musician who can talk to the darkness one can find themselves, especially after someone you love is lost through suicide. Guy Sebastian has written a couple of songs that speaks about his own loss and another to help someone through. Now there is Ren who has achieved this as well. He is extraordinary, so many layers that he has found a way to confront in what almost seems fearless.

Love your honesty and your reactions ❤. The song Power actually touches on how he uses music as his coping skill. I'm sure these have probably already been suggested but look up his collaborations with Sam Tompkins doing Nina Simone, and mashup of shot the sheriff/zion/hip hop with his band Big Push. Literally anything by Ren is fantastic and so happy for him that he's now blowing up the internet after 10+ years of putting his music out there. We can always count on you to get it, Mrlboyd. One of the things I find most compelling about Ren as an artist is his ability to find the universal in the personal. So he's singing about this specific tragedy in his life, but it touches so many of us, and says something about our own tragedies. For me, as someone with a life-altering chronic illness, I can relate to everything here in my personal experience. One does forget "how to be me," when illness takes away everything you once thought was you. I feel like we can all come together and be soothed by this voice of someone who can take that tragedy, and make something so beautiful.

Have ever experienced something like this? Like, finding someone that is creatively so special. I feel like I did when discovered Prince's deep catalog or Peter Gabriel. , but I feel like this is going to go even further than those greats. The first two verses are not written from Ren's perspective, they are written from the perspective of his best friend, Joe, who took his life one evening by jumping from a bridge. The last segment of the song is written from Ren's perspective.

Ren is a true poet. His illness and situations like his friend’s suicide give him a point of view that is older than his years. There’s a lot of party happy youthful look to the future he missed out on in his twenties but on the other hand he’s already done ‘middle age’.

I’m not sure I entirely agree with that. I actually think that because of more than a lost decade of his youth he hankers after those lost years. REN’s lyrics often represent the mind of a 21 year old Uni student as opposed to a 33 year old man. Don’t get me wrong, I still think he is talented to an absurd degree, because he is so multifaceted in what he can do and how well he he can do it all. REN’s don’t come around very often.

They have that Blood Harmony. At times their expressions mirror one another, the eye contact implies so much trust between them- they are on the ride together. This is a very difficult song for Ren to perform. He’s done it on IG and completely broke down and couldn’t finish the last “solo” verse. He came back and did it. Then he wrote that he contemplated not posting him completely “ an emotional mess” but said F- it! Suicide among males are 4X that of females because we are conditioned not to feel and express our emotions.

This is my favorite song by Ren. I can't believe I've never checked out Chinchilla until seeing her collabs with Ren. I knew she was an up-and-coming UK singer, and she'd toured with Sting, but I didn't know how remarkable she was. I so thoroughly adore you, Sir. I literally couldn't be happier to see that •you• specifically, are reacting to this young man with many of his phenomenal collaborators. This song was written about/to/for his dear friend who took his life. Because life is like that, it so happened that Ren was the friend in his circle whose location was physically closest, at that moment, to the bridge where his friend presently was at when Ren got the call. Because life is like that, Ren arrived two minutes too late. This friend was apparently the one who had the funniest stories, who always made them all laugh, who was a brilliant light. Because life is like that, he had confided just a week before to Ren that he was troubled. I don't know when in Ren's timeline, from that event, that his physical illness began, but I imagine that specific night must have tremendously impacted the state of his mental health. You are doing such a respectful and impressive job reacting to this material. Thank you for being you.
