This wasn't the original version. The song was written for a 1955 prison drama titled Unchained. Opera singer Todd Duncan sang the song for the movie. Al Hibbler also sang it before Bobby. Bobby's version is the definitive version of the song. Nobody before and after him can touch him.

When Bobby started to rehearse the song at the Andy Williams Studio he realized how great the Acoustics were and how he could work it with his voice, he told the orchestra he wanted to make some changes and he would be back and that's why this is different than any other recording or record you've ever heard.

No one has EVER done a better job singing this song. It will always belong to sweet Bobby Hatfield, no matter how many people try, it will be his forever - especially this version on the Andy Williams variety show in 1965. Rest in peace Bobby. If you would like to see another side to Bobby watch the RU-vid video of him and Bill Medley singing "I Need Your Lovin' Every Day". Wow does Bobby let loose on that one. Do me a favor and listen to it, please.

He effortlessly delivered arguably the greatest live tv vocal performance in tv history [certainly one of the best ever]. It's really sad that most people have never heard this unforgettable version/performance...and have only ever heard the studio/radio/record version or the movie Ghost. This performance is vastly superior...far more dynamic and powerful. I always love the little lip bite at the end...he knew - "nailed it". In addition to his family being in the audience, he was recovering from a cold. Bobby was an absolute brilliant countertenor with a roughly 4 octave range! And to think...he could have been a professional baseball player instead...fortunately for us, he made the right choice :)

This was live on the Andy Williams show there was no do overs just Bobby's voice from the heavens above and a small microphone. NO do overs no auto-tone. Many did this song Before and after him but no one will ever do this song like Bobby Hatfield. SORRY HE OWNS THIS SONG.His performance was effortless, smooth and sheer perfection. Many fell in love to this song and with him he was gorgeous ❤. This was done in the movie Ghost.I still get goosebumps when I hear it today with him singing it and I was in school back then ❤

"Bobby's Song," he made it his own. Bobby was amazing. NO falsetto! Bobby was a "counter-Tenor," with an amazing, rare baritone to G5 and higher. A natural high-register tenor. He and Bill together are amazing

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something right because we're still together. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on baby's when I was home. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years as a Royal Marine Commandos and British Special Forces, and then over 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.

There is a slightly longer version of this live performance, with some good natured chat between Bobby Hatfield (the soloist), Bill Medley (the other "brother"), and the show's host, Andy Williams (a singer in his own right). At one point Andy asks Bill why he doesn't sing in this one. Bill replies, "I didn't know it was going to be a huge hit." 🙂 Later in that show all three sing another song together. IMO, this live performance is better than the studio version played on the radio. People say his parents (or at least his mother) was in the audience. Bobby really extended the runs as well as making his crescendos the awesomeness you heard. If you haven't heard both brothers, I recommend reacting to _You've Lost that Loving Feeling_ and/or _Soul and Inspiration._

The banter was playful, and of course that isn't why Bill wasn't part of the song. It was always intended as a solo. I always love watching that longer version. Bobby was known to always have a bit of stage fright...and you can hear it in how breathless he was in that chat...but then quite literally 10 seconds later he effortlessly delivered arguable the greatest live tv vocal performance in tv history [certainly one of the best ever]. It's really sad that most people have never heard this unforgettable version/performance...and have only ever heard the studio/radio/record version or the movie Ghost. This performance is vastly superior...far more dynamic and powerful. I always love the little lip bite at the end...he knew - "nailed it". Opera singer and theatre and film actor Todd Duncan sang the song in the 1955 prison movie "Unchained." He played a prisoner in a minimum security prison in Chino California. His version in the movie was short and full of pain and sorrow. The loneliness of the days, months and years they will be away from their wives and families is depicted on the face of Todd Duncan as he sings the song in the movie. Ten years later in 1965. Bobby Hatfield gave a once in a lifetime "live" performance that was one for the ages. His live performance on the "Andy Williams Show" was so perfect that the lyricist of "Unchained Melody" Hy Zaret said of Bobby's performance that "it was the best he had ever heard." Hy Zaret lived to be 100 years old [1907-2007]. Great reaction to one of the greatest songs ever written, and the live performance that is considered by many to be the best ever...

I am so surprised that you were not impressed or inspired enough because there wasn’t some kind of modern day distraction “big explosion.” That’s was as epic of an explosion of talent as it gets. We can’t numb ourselves to greatness because most current music is over produced and nearly a hoax. We are sometimes so desensitized by modern music tech that we forget to hear and understand how astounding it was to be a truly impactful artist pre auto tune, pre test rehearsals and sound checks, pre back stage Fallon and Carson hype you up talks and so many more “pres.”

explosion??????? Bobby Hatfield absolutely nailed this song.....and he is an answer to why older people despise modern noise some actually call it music.....so maybe I am wrong, just tell me who can match this mans talent....also this is not the studio recording....this is live on a tv show in 1965 and he does it with ease.....this talent does not exist anymore as so much no talent noise has destroyed talent....my opinion is most of today's so called music is no-talent noise for the no taste public.

This actually isn’t the type of song that lends itself to an “explosion.” More teenagers in the 60’s slow danced to this song and who knows what happened after the slow dancing? It was the definitive romance song of its time and after Bobby got ahold of it , it was all over. No one did it like him. Although I have to say this is not my favorite rendition of the song. But it can’t be beat no matter how you look at it. If you haven’t listened to “Lost that Lovin’ Feeling” you might want to give it a try. It includes his singing partner Bill Medley and showcases his baritone/bass voice. Also Ebb Tide is another beautiful song.

Jean, so many people before and since have covered it, from Andy Williams himself, to a range of old time crooners and talent show winners, Elvis even attempted it. But this will always be Bobby's song to most of us. He owns everything he's ever sung, imo. Ebb Tide is another one. In fact, it's even better, but a couple of verses too short, I could listen to him singing that every day and never tire of hearing it.

Hello Glasses, I have seen you react to Angelina Jordan. She made a cover of this very song when she was 12, it's awesome. I really like how you brake down the song, this kinds of reactions ads value to a music video in my eyes. But You Tube and the record labels don't seem to appreciate this. A few days ago I wrote a comment about that on Ollie's channel Wolf Rock, here it is: I really don't understand this adversarial stance against reactors that the entertainment industry and You Tube have. Common sense would dictate a mutually beneficial approach in which the reactor share in the revenue that any particular video generates. In essence a reactor uses someone else's work to get views on their own channel, that's true enough. But a good reactor doesn't alter that work in any adverse way. Instead he (or she) enhances the original piece of work by adding different kinds of value to them. One added value is that people that would not seek out a particular artists work by them selves because of one reason or another, suddenly may be interested in that artist, purely because they have been exposed to him (or her) by watching a reactor that they like and respect. That kind of exposure must be very valuable for the artist and the record label, and they didn't have to spend any money to get it. Kind of like a company that makes aftermarket parts for cars. Some car models in their original form does not garner much interest among a certain demographic. But they can suddenly get noticed and coveted by that very demographic when they are modified with after market components, made by companies not affiliated with the original maker. That then creates a mutually beneficial situation wherein the car manufacturer adds a new client base and sell more cars, not thru their own efforts, but by the efforts of an outside company. The after market parts producer in turn gets access to all the different markets where that car manufacturer sells their products. And finally, the buyers of these enhanced products all around the world now get to drive the type of cars they find matches their driving style and taste, everyone wins. I have myself found several new artists that I would have never sought out on my own simply by watching different reaction channels, most recently the artist NF. I never used to listen to rap, the genre seemed to be filled with a bunch of braggarts and misogynists with BIG attitudes and stupid lyrics as far as I was concerned. But one day a few months ago I was exposed to NF thru a reactor that I like. And in this artist I found quality's and a attitude that I found very appealing (and the music is banging too, as the younger generation puts it...). So now I'm subscribed to a RAP channel. (I can hardly believe it myself) The ONLY reason I have subscribed to NF:s official channel is because of that reactor. So shouldn't he also be able to profit a little in this situation? Why is that not the standard on You Tube? I don't understand. Other added values that reaction channels can provide an artist is increased appreciation for their singing ability thru the analysis by voice coaches or other artists. Reaction channels further more help keep the fans of various artists exited about them between record drops because they like watching different people react to their favorite artist. Finally I want to mention the comment section on these reaction channels which provide a space for the fans (new and old) to mingle and discuss and share information about the artist. This also helps the artist to get new fans and to keep the old ones by no effort of their own or by their record label.
