I’m 73 years old and had the great good fortune to witness the explosion of the Beatles on the world, no one is a bigger fan than me. But, I think Roy Orbison is the greatest singer of popular music in my lifetime. I saw an Elvis quote that he would go on stage after anybody except Roy. For what it’s worth, I think Judith Durham of The Seekers is the greatest female singer of my lifetime.

Elvis released his 1st record in 1954. Roy in 1956. They were both with Sun Records in Memphis. Elvis said Roy had a perfect voice. He never did any of Roy's songs because he said he couldn't do them any better than the original. Roy attended all of Elvis' concerts till 1976.

A concert to check out is Roy Orbison and Friends: A black and white night. It was from 1988 and was filmed in black and white. The artists that performed with him included Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waites, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne JD Souther, Steven Soles, Jennifer Warnes, Bonnie Raitt, KD Lang among others. There were lots of celebrities in the audience as well. Also check out the supergroup Travelling Wilburys which he founded with Tom Petty, Bon Dylan, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison. Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Oh, Pretty Woman", "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care", "End Of The Line" etc.

Elvis did say that Roy Orbison is the guy that he didn't want to perform after and loved Roy's voice. Roy is so iconic and perhaps one of the most important male singers in music. One of the first singers to really sing at that high range and even wrote and sung songs of heartbreak and sadness/feelings from a male perspective and making it main stream. I love "I Drove All Night," "Blue Bayou," "Blue Angel," "Only the Lonely," and his classic "In Dreams." Roy didn't make a single bad song!

I doubt you would ever find that actual quote anywhere. Exactly the same quote has been attributed to Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra, BB King and probably a dozen other musicians in describing others, but never verified. That being said, it is certainly true that many times Elvis did express a love and respect for Roy's talent. He did actually say publicly that Roy had the "most perfect voice in the world" and, during a Las Vegas concert, that Roy was "the greatest singer in the world".

@@baskervillebee6097 It certainly was! I read an interview with Fred Foster, who produced his first number 1 hit, "Running Scared", in 1961. Not having the recording technology of today, he was having a problem when Roy sang the last note of the song in falsetto. He tried several times but couldn't get it loud enough to be heard well over the instruments. Roy was getting frustrated. Fred had him face the wall opposite the musicians, but Roy , who said later he was getting embarrassed by it, decided to just belt it out with his chest voice and Fred said he and everyone in the studio were stunned when they heard him hit that high note with so much power and without using falsetto!

It features lots of top artists backing Roy. For sheer awesome vocal ability, however, I suggest only doing songs from the Monument Concert or the studio versions. Almost fell out of my chair when you said 65 was before Elvis. You've been educated in the comments already so I won't beat a dead horse. But some info that I didn't see yet is how Elvis was a superstar by the time he went into the army in 58. Well, he served 58 and 59, Idk the exact date he enlisted. Any how, he already made the first of 31 movies he starred in, and it was called, Love Me Tender. You must've heard that song before, no? He recorded a bunch of songs before he went away bc he thought the people might forget about him while he was gone. They released the songs throughout that time and many of them went straight to the top. He was more famous when he came home than he was when he left. He was 25 years old at this time. He made a string of movies and the songs that went with them throughout the 60s bc he was locked into a contract. When that ended, he was finally able to get back to where he loved the most, in front of his fans. In 1968 he released what is called The Comeback Special, which was aired on TV around Christmas time. It's recordings of him doing very small intimate settings on a small stage which is surrounded by women. Elvis is in a black leather suit with his boys on this small stage sitting in chairs. Prob the first "unplugged" show ever. It's so awesome! I have to leave a link to it. I'll pick the song, Trying To Get To You. Absolute 🔥🔥🔥 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KZ64T6gEdC4.htmlsi=EGDp_6vFykLNa92G It's a real short one, as were most songs from back then, but a certified banger for sure.🤘🤘 Edit: I had it a little jacked up. He actually did 3 movies before the army. He returned home in 1960, at 25 years old, and he was already a millionaire - which is crazy back then.

Most people can't sing this song. Roy was famous for his range.

There is a version by Del shannon from a concert in 1989, that in my opinion surpasses Roy Orbison's

The most beautiful male voice in Rock! The only negative of that video was they showed everything BUT Mr Orbison for the first minute😅 His most well known tune is Oh Pretty Woman.

Roy was known as the "Caruso" of rock n' Roll - a reference to the great Enrique Caruso of opera fame.

There's some really nice steel drums on the studio version. Also his notes are even more impressive.

Dive deeper. I love watching younger people starting to look back, being startled at the quality of what we enjoyed in the 50s/60s/70s.

Elvis and Roy were both influenced by singers like the great Black Operatic Romantic Pop singer Roy Hamilton, who in 1955 (before Elvis and Roy and Bobby and Bill) had chart-topping hits with Unchained Melody, You'll Never Walk Alone, and Ebb Tide.
