I never heard them deny it was about power and oppression, because it certainly is. I think they just didn't want to talk about it, and let the song speak for itself.
@johntarnowski9086

according to lyricist/drummer Neil Peart, there is no meaning at all in this song. When asked in the April/May 1980 Modern Drummer magazine about whether there is a message to this song, Peart said, "No. It was just a flash. I was working on an entirely different thing when I saw a cartoon picture of these trees carrying on like fools. I thought, 'What if trees acted like people?' So I saw it as a cartoon really, and wrote it that way. I think that's the image that it conjures up to a listener or a reader. A very simple statement."

The lyricist for Rush was Neil Peart. He was also the drummer for the band and he excelled at that too. He was an avid reader and writer and he really was a poet. At one time, he was listed in “The Guinness Book of World Records” as “the most creative lyricist in the world,” or something like that.

48 Year RABID RUSH fanatic. My Girlfriend, that's right my GF turned me on to them in June of 1974 the week their self-titled debut was released in the US (Canadian release date March '74). The instant the stylus contacted vinyl I was hooked for life at 13. First saw them in January 1977 on their "All The World's a Stage" tour. I was front row center arms on stage 16 years old attending solo.There were no distance moats in the 70's. The crowd was pressed directly against the stage. Every arena show was General Admission. No assigned seats and NO floor seats at all. You stand for hours. And loved every minute of it. Saw them again in 1980 on the "Permanent Waves" tour. I am now 62 and am more in love with them than ever. RIP Neil.

This was an early fav Rush of mine back when I was 15/16yo even though all of them really were- lol). But YES Van, this song is technically about trees but really, just using a forest scene (trees specifically) as an analogy about how people relate to each other involving tons of typical situations in life. Basic life questions & lessons about sharing and entitlements , jealousy, solving dilemmas and revenge.

You are correct as to the "meaning". Some music is made simply to listen to and enjoy, others to make a statement, still others to tell a tale of a journey much like a musical " movie". Great reaction! I love the comments. The thing is with Niels lyrics is that it can be interpreted so many ways. Geddy Lee said in an Interview that Neil would hand him the lyrics, he would read them and say oh this song is about (X). And Neil would say to him that that’s not what the song was about but he could see how It could be interpreted that way. One things for sure, it’s not about literally trees.

The key line in this song is the last one. Now the trees are all kept equal by hatchet axe and saw. The only way to achieve equality of outcome (equal light in this case) is to cut the best of us down. Is that right, to cut the oak down simply because he is successful. Imagine if they told Labron he had to play with one hand tied behind his back, or Michael Phelps that he had to swim in a cotton hoodie. It's only fair... When we break out the cutting tools, something has gone wrong.

Some people think this song is about the USA and Canada. The maples are Canada, they are in the shade and are not the ones you ear about. The USA are the Oaks and they have the « light ». The maples think the Oaks are just too greedy which is interesting because the Usa could be considered greedy in some examples. Also the « union » could be something of a reference to the thing Canada and Usa signed about free-exchange. So yeah this is a theory

Rush was a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Tom Sawyer", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "The Spirit Of Radio", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.

That zing that you hear in the slower part between the temple blocks/wood blocks is a bell tree-tuned brass cups and looks like a tree as one end usually the top bowl starts big and gets smaller to the bottom. I'm a bass player and I think Hemispheres my number one favorite Rush album. The moment coming out of the synth lead/ temple blocks is the best part of the song with the bass pedals on low octave and the cymbal/ kick beats while Alex is doing an up down chromatic then Ged pops in on bass. Hemispheres is sheer genius writing but they've said in interview/magazines that it was a very tiring and frustrating album to create.

That's exactly what it's about, LIFE!! The Oaks could be representative of say GenX'ers and the Maple say millennials, the people who expect you to apologize for who & what you are!! Like us Gen Xer's are expected to apologize to the millennials because we were raised to take care of ourselves and we don't cry, get offended, some of are offensive 🤪 but We will not apologize for being who we are or aren't!! Just a for instance! Lol My senior English teacher taught rush as poetry so I have a unique perspective of rush!!!
