The band has been through lot of changes and eventually split, so I recommend you also check Soulfly, which is the former vocalist's new band. That Brazilian ju-jitsu you speak of is called 'Capoeira' I guess the significance of it in this song 'Roots bloody roots' can be directly linked to when slaves were transported from Africa to South America, during the middle passage. Capoeira was used by the people as a weapon against there oppressors; disguised as a dance, as it was illegal in the 16th Century for a slave to learn self defense or fighting skills. I guess this song in more ways than one is a cathartic exercise for them recognizing the negative effects of the history using the symbolism of Capoeira in it's religious or spiritualist context by summoning up the strength of there ancestors and fighting the powers that be.

First Sepultura smashed the boundaries between punk and thrash. Then they invented a whole new genre with the Roots album, and it changed metal forever. They wanted to go deep into Brazilian culture on this album, so they went into the Rainforests and hung out tribes, even recorded with them. It gave the whole album such a unique sound.

You should check out the Chaos A.D. album that came before this. It was the first album where they were exploring adding world music elements; before that they had just been a pretty straight death metal band. On Chaos A.D. the rhythm went from that standard death metal sound to a more groove-oriented world sound that meshed with the metal really well. On Roots they really took the fusion to a new level, but its cool to hear the beginning stages of it on Chaos A..D.

The roots they are talking about are slavery, catholicism... I mean, man, it was all there in the imagery used in the video! From Wikipedia: "The music video was directed by Thomas Mignone and won the Kerrang "Video Of The Year Award" in 1996, as well as a nomination for the MTV Brazil "Best Rock Video" Award. Filming was done in the catacombs underneath the city of Salvador, where the Brazilian slaves were sold. The video is distinguished from other heavy metal imagery by its atypical use of the natural beauty of Brazil, including its traditional capoeira fight, Timbalada percussionists, and Afro-Brazilians people, as well as the reference to the religion of Candomblé. The video also shows scenes of Catholic churches." That mixture of african slaves, european conquistadors, native brazilians, their different religions, all the suffering brought by the church and the europeans, all of those are the bloody roots, most of it nearly invisible to many people nowadays.

excellent choice to hear with the video ...Cuz it show some very important aspects of a part of Brazilian culture... even though the music refers mostly to the natives ( the indigenous people), can easily relate to the slaves brought from Africa.... and the video, to be easier to make was filmed at the most, "African dependent" part is Brazil, the state of Bahia, that created a lot of the mixed cultural aspects of modern Brazil, like religions( the guys with big buffing skirts, straws and cloths on the head, dancing, who are deities of a african-brazilian religion), dances, music, and ...fights .... very nice music from a great band with a hell of a video .......

Yes, they are from Brasil. I saw them at a free concert on the beach in Rio de Janeiro in 1991! At that time & for many years, the could sing in English but didn't speak a word of English. It is called Capoeada.

One of my favourite metal bands of all time, Discovered them way back in the 90's and they just blew my mind with their tunage. Great stuff here, Loved the reaction, A suggestion that would blow your mind is the tune Desperate Cry by Sepultura and I think there is a extended remastered version of it on RU-vid somewhere, Anyways Cheers man!
