I’m sure lots of people will fill you in but this is a Prince song that Sinead totally made her own. Incredible talent and probably one of the first people to get ‘cancelled’ after she tore up a picture of the pope on live tv on a point of principle.

Sinead cut her hair when her record company wanted to package her as another “pop princess”, the haircut was her way of protesting/preventing that. Sadly, she’s struggled with a lot of mental health issues and we didn’t get nearly the amount of music from her that we could have otherwise.

She also did it for a couple other reasons. She only cut it completely off after that, but she had short hair long before that ... here's the story from the Dr. Phil Show... "“When we were children, my sister had beautiful red hair, glorious red hair. That’s why I’d be jealous of her,” O’Connor shares. “But my mother took it into her head that my sister’s hair was ugly, and horrible and disgusting. And she started, when I had long hair, she would introduce us as her pretty daughter and her ugly daughter. And that’s why I cut my hair off. I didn’t want to be pretty. O’Connor opens up about her childhood, claiming that she suffered abuse at the hands of her mother daily. And, she reveals that she was raped as a child numerous times.” That sentiment actually followed her everywhere she went. At another time, she also confided that it wasn't safe being a pretty girl where she was from, and short hair helped to tone down her looks. She never escaped it, because, even with pretty much no hair, she was and is still very beautiful.

Thank you Prince for writing such a beautiful song...RIP. Very simplistic music video w/ just a close up of Sinead's beautiful face. She was thinking of her sick or deceased mother when this music video was shot...hence the tears! This is one of the best songs ever. RIP Sinead O'Connor...just heard the sad news. Yeah, she was right though. It's why I gained weight. All my life I was told that fat people were ugly and disgusting and guys don't like fat girls. I thought I would be safe being fat so guys wouldn't want to assault me anymore. I have replaced one problem with another but at least they left me alone. It's also why she tore up the pope's picture because she knew back then what the priests were doing to little kids and the pope and his minions were hiding it all. She tried to tell everyone but no one believed, or wanted to believe her.

Sinead was the first victim of cancel culture, that I can recall after her appearance on SNL. She was banned for life on nbc, in 1992, after Sinead held up a photo of Pope John Paul II and tore it in half. To her, the photo "represented lies and liars and abuse". And she was correct.

Hardly the first. I guess you're not aware of the blacklisting of Hollywood actors, writers, etc. in the '50s for suspected connections to the Communist Party. So called "cancel culture" is nothing new, it has always existed in one form or another. They tried to "cancel" The Beatles after John's controversial remarks about The Beatles having a bigger following than Jesus. But they were The Beatles so good luck with that. 😄

This was such a compelling video - her beautiful eyes, the vulnerability portrayed was just stunning. Sinead was somewhat the rebel and has really had a troubled and unhappy personal and professional life. She's just lost her only son to suicide. Such a talented woman, a fighter. Hope she finds the happiness that's eluded her.

Almost spot on: this was released in 1990, so 31 years ago. It's one of those timeless songs, I think, which is why you were surprised by just how old it is. It was a massive hit back the and that Parton the video wher tears just roll freely down her face was one of those iconic visuals of that time. So weir to think there's an entire generation (possibly 2) who don't know this song or who Sinaed is. BtW, she's Irish which is why the pronunciation of her name is unexpected. Sadly, another comments have said, she has struggled with a lot of really bad metal health issues over the years.

Notice she did all that closeup in ONE long shot. The emotion stabs my heart every time. This song was EVERYWHERE when it came out. I’m not sure how long it remained in the top 10, but it had to be a while. She just used the pain of losing her mom to connect with the emotion of the lyrics in the moment.

The video wasn't supposed to be like that. The director shot it like that and was going to chop up the best sections and use them intermittently with other non performance imagery, but when he saw it he knew he had to just go with it as is and scrapped his ideas for the other stuff.

Since Prince wrote the song, the verse ending with “mama” I’m sure referenced his lover, not his mother. Sinead didn’t change the gender in the verse.

For all the people who wants to make this about "Sinead's version vs Prince's version" thing, well Prince wrote so much music and really fast (10,000 songs by the 90s), that he obviously knew some of his songs will be taking cared and nurture by others, sometimes bad (Beyonce's Beautiful Ones), sometimes good (Cindy Lauper's Will You Be Mine), sometimes awesome (The Bangles' Manic Monday), sometimes brilliant (Chaka's I Feel 4 U) etc. That what happens when your a musical genius, great talent can re-imagine other great talent. Respect to Sinead for daring the mainstream in a none traditional way, I mean in 1990 top female solo acts were doing lip-sync, with banal sexy dancing (Madonna) and other people choreography (Janet Jackson). Sinead create a beautiful work of art from other work of art, with honesty and respect. Best Prince cover ever.

She had hits with "Troy" and "Mandinka" before she even did this song. She was even nominated for a Grammy for her first Album and performed on the show. Not a one hit wonder. But you are right about the other part. She was going to blow her career up one way or another. If the Pope thing didn't work it would have been something else. Her childhood abuse and her desire to do important music left her ill suited to be a pop star, or to be happy. she has done some really good music since this as well. "This is a Rebel song" "Heroine" "8 good reasons" all stand out.

Great singer. I loved "Lion and the Cobra" this album was great too. I heard some of her Irish folk type stuff and it was great. Too bad they gave her such a hard time with her fame from this album. This is one of those songs you remember exactly where you were the very first time you heard it. Even though I know now it was released in 1990, the first time I heard it was June 1991... I was at Gold's Gym on the stationary bike. Video came on the TV and when she started singing, I said that sounds like something Prince would sing. I didn't find out until like 1996 that he actually did write it and that The Family released in 1985

Prince had originally wrote this song in 1985 for a side group project of his called "The Family" there is also a 1984 recording of him recording with his group, The Revolution, in Minneapolis. This can also be found on his concert song from 1993. There is also a concert song by Chris Stapleton he did right after his death in 2016 you can find it on RU-vid.

If a lady has a shaved head and is still beautiful then you know the beauty comes from her heart as well. When I returned to get her she met someone else, I have never known what happened. I am still in love with her today after 55 years, have never met (or wanted anyone else). Tragic ,rest in peace😢She will always be beautiful. She said that her mother planted the flowers in her backyard that was where it was just letting her mom know she’s hurting over this person. The person that left her and prince wrote the lyrics but I really think he wrote them for her Sinead O’Connor. It breaks my heart we lost Sinead O’Connor, I’m sorry she took her own life. She couldn’t tolerate the fact that her son killed her self. She blamed her self depression is an illness. I can’t believe it was such an amazing person.
