This song was written in 1978. It captivates people to this day, and many singers have covered it since it was written. Dimash`s cover of it became the perfect introduction to his vocal capabilities. In 2017, when he participated in a competition for established singers in China (he was a 22 yo wild card without an established career), he sang this in the first episode, and the next day the producers assigned him bodyguards. He gained a chinese fanbase of millions during that show, and later videos of his performances there spread across the globe, bringing him international fame. Dimash was inspired to cover 'SOS' by Gregory Lemarchal`s version. Gregory passed away at age 24, of cystic fibrosis which severely affected his lungs. He sang SOS with the voice of an angel at a time when he only had 20% lung capacity left. Dimash kept only some of the lyrics, giving the song a stripped down, philosophical meaning. Some of the lyrics, like "I didn`t get the right number (at the lottery of the universe)" didn`t really fit his own life, as it unfortunately fit Gregory`s tragic destiny, of having to live with a deadly genetic condition. Initially Dimash probably sang "SOS" for the range, in a couple of competitions, then he started using it as tribute to artists who died young, rolling pictures of them on stage during his concerts : Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Gregory Lemarchal himself, Amy Winehouse, Chester Bennington, and many others. After 2018, for a couple of years, he used 'SOS' as a tribute and gentle goodbye to his friend Denis Ten, kazakh figure skater, who had skated to his cover in competition, and they were planning to do a performance together, but Denis was killed in 2018 at age 25 by thieves trying to rob parts of his car. "Why do I live ? Why do I die ?" "I think I receive waves coming from another world" "Sleep, child, sleep" got a whole new level of meaning in the contexts above. 2020-2022 he rolled images of painful events that sometimes make us wish we could "fly like a bird, hoping the world would be more beautiful from above" - natural disasters, the burning of Notre Dame Cathedral, then pandemic doctors, nurses, and hospitals. After 4 years of heavy meaning, in the last 2 concerts, which kickstarted his new tour (september 2022 and Armenia last week), he used an utopian city landscape, and left it abstractly philosophical :)

"SOS" is from the 1970s French-Canadian cyber-punk musical, "Starmania." "SOS" had an interesting history even before it became Dimash's musical calling card. You can read about that elsewhere. However, it's almost impossible to find even a brief "Starmania" plot summary, in comments or elsewhere. As I remember, it involves corrupt global villains, a young dissident, and a love story, with his beloved lady tragically dying. "SOS" is sung as she expires from a gunshot wound ("Sleep, child, sleep"). Dimash always performs this song with several dear, departed friends in mind. Dimash is the ultimate, complete entertainer. His mother is a trained opera singer, his father a singer and producer. He felt, and heard, fine music from Day 1, even pre-birth! Dimash described what he called his "monkey act": climbing on stage, at a few years of age, as an audience applauded his parents--then taking bows as they responded with laughter mixed with more applause. Dimash works with his voice almost all his life, his parents sing, his mother is a soprano, he since childhood tells us that he sang high, he has a gift that he clearly says that God has given him, there is a lot of work here, he usually practices 3 or 4 hours a day and when a concert approaches he comes to work 10 hours, that's why his concert last between 3 and 4 hours and he says he's not tire. Dimash Qudaibergen (di-MOSH Koo-dye-BEHR-gen) is a talented artist from Kazakhstan who began his formal training at the age of 5. He is professionally trained in opera, contemporary music, and musical theater. I hadn't heard this version of the song. I've heard a number of different Dimash performances of this piece, but this is by far the most recent, and the thing that really stands out to me is his growth artistically in the lower register. He could always hit those low notes, but they didn't sound nearly so musical as they do here. The low range is starting to sound as good as his high range, which is truly remarkable.

When I listen to Dimash, I can forget the world and be captivated by pureness of sound. For a fleeting moment, I am lifted free of humanity and all that encompasses. My vocal trifecta is AJ, Diana Ankudinova, and Dimash.

This song is from a late 70's rock opera from Quebec. It has been one of Dimash's go to songs for singing competitions because of its vocal range, so I wouldn't take all of the lyrics as a statement from Dimash, because they relate to the story. Many of us heard the version of this song from the Chinese show Singer 2017 as our starting point, and there are other songs from that competition worth checking out, but they might not be as impressive after watching his more recent performances, because he keeps improving.

Sure didn't take you l9ng to figure our he's out of this world. Even though he and Angelina are totally different genres they both grew up and still practice 5-6+ hrs a day. I truly love everything that Dimash is able to do with his voice. Igor, his pianist and Dimash have worked together for many years. Dimash started studying music at the age of 5. He received an elementary musical education. He was raised by his grandparents. He then received an education in opera singing. He was offered a job at the opera house. But he refused to continue studying pop, folk and jazz singing. And after that he got an education in composition. He plays 5 instruments, writes music. His parents are professional singers. And recently Dimash shot the video "Together". The music for it was written by his younger brother.

Dimash is the most phenomenal singer, I listen to him every day and have been lucky enough to see him live. It was such an amazing show. There are so many amazing songs to choose from. Olimpico is my favourite, although I have many. Welcome to Dimash x

You, sir, are officially a Dear. That is Dimash's nickname for his fans. I have been following him for 6+ years now and he just keeps getting better. How? I have no idea other than the fact that he works hard and is never satisfied with doing just what people think he is capable of. He constantly strives for MORE. DIMASH has been on my daily playlist for at least the past 4 years since I came across one of his videos (SOS) on RU-vid! He takes me on a spiritual journey every time I listen to him! I had the amazing privilege of seeing him singing live in Dec. 2019 at the Barclay Center in NYC when he performed his first solo concert ever in the US! Let me tell you, if you think he sounds incredible in the videos, he sounds even better live!! During his concert in NYC I kept having goose bumps while he was singing and I had to wipe away tears from my eyes several times! Seeing him performing live is a life-changing experience!!

To learn more about Dimash I very highly recommend a set of videos by LiLaSi. Each is about a different aspect of Dimash's life and is about 5-10 minutes long. They use footage of Dimash himself from interviews etc so they are very accurate. They are super well done and enjoyable! You may also enjoy (just for yourself as it's too long to react to) a video that I think is called "Dimash singing without a microphone." It's about an hour long but you'll see him singing at weddings, in airports and with family and friends. Enjoy! 🇨🇦
