I honestly think it has to do with the content of the music. Honestly, I'm all for the performance and romantic ideas, I'm older and I was all about New Edition, Jodeci, Boyz II Men, and all singing groups, but now four dudes getting together to dance and sing about "love songs" these days? There's so much going on in terms of what's masculine and what's not, I think older understandings of romanticism are seen as potentially "not manly" PLUS everything has gone towards individual efforts for singers, maybe a collab here and there but groups right now aren't in. However, I do believe they will make a come back as all things artistic go in cycles.
