"I cried when I wrote this song, sue me if I play too long". I never tire of this song, or this Masterpiece Album. Butter, Caramel, and Silk. I agree completely. The Royal Scam Album is my fav
Hi michael! Yes, every song is perfection here....Glad you liked my analogies 🙂 Ah yes, will have to get to that album, many requested songs from there! Thanks for watching!
Tom Scott, a hall of fame jazz saxophone player wrote the arrangement for the iconic sax solo which is played by Pete Christlieb who also played tenor with the Johnny Carson Tonight Show Band. Smooth as a newborn baby’s bottom. This is a desert island album for me, one of a small handful that I’d need to keep me alive until I was rescued. Great reaction and analysis Brandon.
Hi there! LOL, I too thought about that baby analogy 😁 Glad to hear this album means so much to you. Thanks so much for watching and for the comment/compliment!
This tune is like a late-night limo ride around mid-town Manhattan circa mid-1970s. Your gal tucked up tight next to you. Nothing can go wrong. Life is jake. Thanks again, Retro Reactions, for the look back!
My favorite SD lyrics are in this song, and(IMHO) it sums up Steely Dan's attitude towards music...and life I Cried When I Wrote This Song Sue Me If I Play Too Long Of course, the usual excellence elsewhere, an example of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan emphasizing jazz more than rock at this point in their catalog RIP Walter Becker
What a great song choice for today! Steely Dan always gives you mellow, relaxed vibes. I didn’t realize you were that close to finishing the album! Lol
I certainly hope you plan on bringing us more Steely Dan!! I’ve listened to them over the years, but albums like Can’t Buy A Thrill, Katie Lied, Pretzel Logic, The Royal Scam are just the tip of the iceberg of what you’ll be enjoying down the road. 😊
Music from my youth! I remember two main things about Steely Dan: this was usually your favourite band's favourite band, and stereo stores used this album for audiophiles testing speakers and headphones!
Man this song takes me back to a peaceful time in life. Such a classic. Also makes me feel like I'm on a beach with a slight cool breeze blowing, lol. OMG, I seriously just typed the previous sentence, then You basically said the exact same thing... great minds, right 😀
The guitar sprinkles on the outro was Lee Ritenour ! Larry Carlton plays the main rhythm guitar and Dean Parks plays acoustic guitar though uncredited on the album liner notes!
One of the highlights of the band. Wonderful chorus. Overall, Steely Dan's music is a terrific work. But some of their songs stand out. “Deacon Blues” is undoubtedly one of them. I like the early days in the 70's where the band worked more with blues, rock and folk; but also the late works, in which jazz influences can more and more be heard, are phenomenal. It's always amazing to me that, even though Fagen and Becker were meticulously working perfectionists in the studio and wanted their studio musicians to set every single note in a targeted manner, their music surprises the listener with an unexpected twist every thirty seconds. Again and again you come to corners, enter a "new street" with a new sight and are impressed with a new great musical turnaround.
STEELY DAN is a band that has changed its sound throughout its career. Despite everything, the quality of the composition and production has never wavered. In my opinion, the 1976-77 sound will remain the band's most popular identity. If you like STEELY DAN, then chances are you'll like THE BLISS BAND and especially "That's The Way That It Is" (1979). Thanks.
Hey Brandon, this album is fantastic. We took so much good music for granted, it was everywhere. A great time to be young and pretty! I had an awesome 70s, 80s. I miss it. I have just subbed you and asked your name but now I know so, hi Brandon. I am East Coast England, aging hippie rock chick. Peace, love, music and especially The Beatles. Always. Always The Beatles. 🥰
Sounds like you grew up at the perfect time! I will be doing a 60s week in the next couple of months...would love to know your favorite Beatles songs that aren't really known by the general public...Thanks!
@@retroreactions.... oh yeah, I can do that. Ready? Rain; Not a 2nd Tme, In My Life, There's a Place, Day in the Life, Hide Your Love Away, Blackbird, Revolution, Helter Skelter, She's leaving Home.
Big Soul Retro, thank you for all the hard work and for bringing such great music to your channel. It's great to see the magic of the music put a smile on your face. The intellectual fusion of Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Funk is unique, and Steely Dan brings light to our souls.
I thoroughly enjoy your reviews! SD is the best. My dad got me into them back in the day. They have become even more special to me after losing my dad a few years back. Thank you for your reviews! ❤
Great reaction! I could (and sometims I actually do) listen to this song ten times in a row or more, the music it's so relaxing and the lyrics are so amazing! One of my favourite songs of my favourite band!
RR...Your reactions are Fantastic. You have a musical sense and provide meaningful and descriptive comments....and without having to go into too much technical talk that might elude many listeners. On an occasion, Eddie Van Halen received an award for his playing, and thanked the audience for "Getting It." You get it, and we appreciate it! More Steely...Aja is a masterpiece!
Hi Dan! Thank you so much for those wonderful compliments! Really appreciate your support. I have reacted to 5 other Steely songs. Let me know if you'd like the links...
Sometimes I really hate fade outs because you can hear that there is still some good music still happening. Oh well fading out was pretty common back in the 70s
Another well remembered song from my teens. The joke back then was "hey want to go to the Steely Dan concert?" Oh ha ha - they don't tour just a studio band. Which was true I believe until the late 90s. The lyrics and feel are poignant. Its a rather depressing song actually. There was a beer company in the 70s (Michelob?) that had an advertising campaign "we got a name for the winners in the world". And of course Alabama Crimson Tide was a huge football winner (as they still are today). So he wants a name when he loses - Deacon Blues! Lol
Since this is the 2nd false narrative that radio in the day only played 3 minute songs. FM RADIO changed that when it brought stereo and a longer format to our radios in the mid 70's. This one was played in its entirety on Z93 or WQXI FM 96. They played Pink Floyd!!
Ah yes....Steely Dan. Much like Pink Floyd, they created their own genre. Delving into their catalog isn't so much a 'rabbit hole' as it is a deep mine shaft, with many strange side passages to explore. Pack a lunch and drop bread crumbs or you may never get back out. Next time, try what may be their most eclectic track - funky reggae - "Haitian Divorce": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dKMCz1b2RxE.html
