One of the most respected and loved musicians in the metal/rock world. A living legend. His voice is just as easily recognizable as Robert Plant. And yeah, he has nearly a 3 octave range. Remember Phantom of the Opera? He hit a G5 at the end. That's just amazing. Thank you for doing these. It's always interesting to see where our heroes came from.
More Marko: He sings lead on these Nightwish songs ...The Islander (live at Tampere), While Your Lips are Still Red (live at Wembley), High Hopes ( Pink Floyd cover...from the End of an Era show) He has a solo album, with videos for the song Stones and the song Voice of My Father
20-year-old Marko in 1986! Tarot makes me wish I grew up in Finland, lol! The Tides video got posted in 2008, although it didn't say when the show was filmed. Might have been as early as 2006, more likely early to mid 2007 considering that Nightwish started touring for Dark Passion Play in September of 2007. You might hear a difference in Marko's vocals aside from the song style between the two (or if you check out the 2011 version of Wings of Darkness for a more accurate comparison) because Marko had a botched surgery for a polyp in his throat in the mid-90s that nearly cost him his voice altogether. He managed to re-learn how to sing, but it damaged the nerves on one side of his throat and he never got his full falsetto back. One other early Marko vocal sample you might enjoy is a stripped-down acoustic version of Stigmata from Tarot's 1995 album of the same title - just him and his brother Zachary with acoustic guitars on a Japanese tv show. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RfE722Whj5s.html (He doesn't have the beard yet, but he's a lot more recognizable!) And then here's Marko and Troy in 2012, doing an acoustic rendition of Jethro Tull's Locomotive Breath; this one's a fan-cam so not the best video, but still good. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uXfkWL6MK0I.html And finally in an adorable home video from 2010, the ultimate sweet Marko, singing a "lullaby" (Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan) to Jukka's youngest. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--XBZutbxSf4.html
Tides is a great song so is this performance. Shows Marko's versatility as a vocalist and his passion for music. There is something special in his mellow voice. I love his heavier vocals as well. I think music is his life, he is ment to perform. Impossible to think he wouldn't come back. Hoping agaist hope, I'm afraid, that when they reveal 'the new session bassist', it would be, surprise, surprise - Marko!
This was really nice surprise! Great reaction once again! I saw Tarot play live about 30 years ago. They were/are awesome. Check out their full live concert "Undead indeed" It's from the year 2007, if I remember correctly.
How did you look back when you was 20? I had big hair and big shoulder pads... Marko voice was crystal clear before his surgery. But now it's very personal and versitale, and I love it. Marko's brother Sakari is a damn good guitar player
Thank you for giving me new perspectives of the people I love to listen to. Had only heard the newest version of Wings of darkness. He looks at the camera just as creepy as in this video. And the other guyes have gaind some extra, shall we say, stability.
Nice double reaction giving some perspective to things! During the '90s Tarot grew a lot toward more serius and deeper progressive metal, and most of that happened well before Nightwish even got started with their early power metal stuff. So, if anything, some of the 'magic' might have flowed from Tarot to NW via Marco Hietala. He also continued to make great music with Tarot well into the 2010s - until their beloved drummer passed away. They were great live, as this Undead Indeed live-DVD documenting a gig from 2006 so well demonstrates. I loved those gigs in packed clubs and on the various festival stages.
So sad Marko left Nightwish, but completely understandable. I hope that whoever they get can do him justice. The lineup prior to his leaving was absolutely perfect... every member completely irreplaceable.
Marko was annoyed throughout the 80s in Finnish interviews and always answered 'I'll never grow a beard! Never.' So glad he broke that promise, he got even more gorgeous with facial hair.
...highly recommend to check out Tarot's Heavy Metal on Ice consert songs "Guardian Angel" and "Things that crawl at night" - if you liked the Tides song 🤘🙂👍
