Yay!!! This is an incredible song. It was Tears For Fears' homage to The Beatles. They have a lot of great songs. Head Over Heels, Shout etc.

Funny tidbit.... "DJ's the man we love the most" was a little shout out to MTV and the radio DJ's that were spinning their material.

TFF has been around for decades, consisting mostly of vocalists Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal (Roland's the one with the longer hair). They just reunited in 2022 and cut their first album in 19 years, and it's great. They are amazing live, and if you want to go down this rabbit hole, you have to start with "Everybody Wants to Rule the World".

These dudes cut their teeth in music adopted by an early Goth scene. Dark, depressing, and passionate, early 80s. That's when they appealed to me the most, but I understand my bias. Their later work was more accessible, this cut taking on a Beatles-eque psychedelia; a hopefulness very different than their first album. Fantastic artists all around. Much respect.

The song is a throwback to '60s nostalgia (big in the late '80s) with a nod to The Beatles and a kind of Flower Power philosophy to it, including political lyrics starting with "High time we made a stand and shook up the views of the common man" and ending with "An end to need and the politics of greed." Written by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the lyrics in this song are a byproduct of Orzabal's interest in psychology and philosophy - he cites Sartre's Les Mains Sales and Arthur Janov's Primal Scream as literary influences. The song is a call to action, asking us to reject the status quo: "High time we made a stand and shook up the views of the common man."

Some very of-the-time UK references here. I was 15 in 1989 when this came out and just starting to become aware of politics. "Politician granny with your high ideals, have you no idea of how the majority feels?" is a reference to the then UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher - it proved prophetic as she was outed from power a year later ... "Food goes to waste, so nice to eat, so nice to taste" is a reference to the EEC (forerunner of the EU) butter mountains and milk lakes which were making headlines at the time, and seemed obscene in the light of recent famines in Africa. "Kick out the style, bring back the jam" was a reference to UK mod legend Paul Weller's band The Style Council, which was a very different style to his earlier band The Jam and seemed to reflect 80s slick excess and materialistic attitude much more (at least as far as their image went) and perhaps seemed a far cry from the raw and relateable late 70s/early 80s sound of The Jam. TFF seemed to be communicating their disapproval of their colleague's reinvention of himself and were suggesting he go back to his 'Jam' roots! :)

Tears For Fears were early in emo music with, "The Hurting" an amazing and groundbreaking album. They were part of the trio of the second British invasion of American music with their peers: Pet Shop Boys and Wham! The deeper influencers are Joy Division/New Order, Depeche Mode-Yaz/Yazzoo-Erasure, and The Smiths-Morrissey, and Electronic. Duran Duran was in this era as well. All from the top of my head and I know there are so many more.
