Great song! one of my favorites of their early ones. This performance was wonderful too, such a small intimate group. I loved the fact you commented on the next act setting up. You need to watch the Long Tall Sally from the same performance, it is after this when the hosts just don't want the Beatles to leave and continue to watch the other performers watch them. Fun stuff.

I Want to Hold Your Hand who is the first US hit and started beetle mania in the United States. Other early releases were She Loves You, Love Me Do (first release in the UK), and one of my favorites, I Should Have Known Better. Some of the later mid Beatles songs I like best are For No One, She's Leaving Home, Penny Lane, and Eleanor Rigby, what are the so-called Baroque Beatles style.

I saw them on the Ed Sullivan show and was mesmerized. I had never seen anything like them--because there wasn't. They were funny, charming, witty, and intelligent. And the music! Became an instant fan. Never able to see them live, and I really enjoy clips like this. I have all their records on vinyl and play them over and over again. They grew and evolved and so did their music. They pushed the boundaries of what rock n roll was and could be.

These guys loved having fun and were silly at times. I get to brag that I had seats up front at the Hollywood Bowl in the mid ‘60s when the Beatles played there ❤️😀

Beatles/Do You Want To Know A Secret. This was among the few songs that was released in the USA in 1963 just before full blown Beatlemania the next year in 1964😮😊

You can't get any more timeless than The Beatles! I was born in 1964 and just turned 60 and here we are 60 years later and the young people are discovering them (if they didn't hear them through via parents) and are loving them as well.

as I recall-this is the Drop In show from sweden in 1963 about three weeks before Beatlemania hit Britain then a few months later the US. This is why you can hear the music.

I love the early Beatles! My favorite was a ballad, And I Love Her.

On tour, they would travel with 6-8 more bands and each band would do a 20-30 minute set of all their songs.

I love the early Beatles songs!! I was 11 when I got Beatlemania, had every photo on my wall. Heinz catsup had a thing if you saved bottle labels you could get a 6 foot tall photo of your favorite Beatle. Mine was Paul. When I got my 6 foot photo and put it up, my mother thought there was a man in my room, that I thought was crazy!!! I think I still have everything I had then tucked away. Some day it will be fun to look back at everything again. I even had a Beatles trading card collection that I won a prize for. A magical time!! This one TV show performance made them the biggest band in Sweden and the compare was so impressed when this should have been their last number but she asked them to do one more and they obliged with Long Tall Sally and brought the house down.

In the 40s, 50s and 60s, it was the advertisers on the radio that dictated how long songs could be. More than 3 minutes was too long to not have a commercial to make money for the sponsor. The Beatles took a couple of years to build up popluarity to cross the 4 minute mark.,

I enjoyed this reaction. I like seeing what a famous band ir person sounded like in the beginning. They were not the very good, but I can see the potential . Some one below posted that their record recording was much better. I have seen documentarieries on how they changed the word of music by introducing or improving ways of layering tracks over each other for more sound complexity.

A large part of this was that the Beatles were closer to a modern rock group concept. Other groups were sneaking up on rock, but most of them came off as still somewhat like musical revue acts. It's impossible to really convey what was happening without living in the time.

How about THIS BOY, A 3 part harmony song as old as this song. Other early Beatles are IF I FELL, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, CAN'T BUY ME LOVE......

Their first U.S. number 1 was I Want To Hold Your Hand. A good song to continue exploring the early Beatles. Their 1963 Royal Command performance is a pretty good quality recording.

Their first two albums were their best. The Drummer was Ringo Starr! He has a humorous side, all his life. John Lennon was the serious one. But I love Ringo. Paul was the Shakespeare of the group. George was inside guy watched and learned.

For its time their look was wild. The suits were collarless, the latest in fashion but very different than what you would see day-to-day. Hair is neatly trimmed but at this time it was so far beyond what was considered a middle-class haircut folks claimed they looked like girls. Standards changed quickly after this. They weren't necessarily the first artists to adopt this look but they were very popular in the mainstream, appealing to girls of all classes in a way that most adults didn't get at the time. But as you noted in the beginning, they were very practiced, every song was well-rehearsed and they were a tight band on stage, which meant that they could smile and seemingly goof around on stage, while still making amazing music. They had already been together for 5-6 years when this was recorded, playing in small clubs in the UK and in Germany, playing multiple sets between acts in strip clubs for 8-10 hours per night, thousands of hours in front of small crowds with minimal sleep and lots of amphetamines, developing their act and perfecting their songs, until they hit it big.

You should look out for George Thorogood's tribute to The Beatles. He says what struck him, seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show, was just how happy they were. America at that time was miserable after JFK was shot and no jobs etc. And here come these four cheeky happy lads from Liverpool. Their manager, Brian Epstein, insisted the dressed smartly to give a good impression. How about reacting to the whole of the first album, Please Please Me? It's great. Recorded in 12 hours flat, no messing around.

Usually with these live performances, the mics are the problem, but here it's George's guitar solo that isn't amp'ed properly.

Songs were less than 3 minutes back then, The Beatles, and others, did 30 min concerts.....10 songs....can you imagine that? John Lennon was blond as a bat, and on stage he could not see a thing. You can see him squint in a lot of live videos....until he started a fashion trend with those granny glasses.

Despite the sound balance being slightly off (making Johns harmonising vocals drown out Paul's lead here, and elsewhere George's guitar solo gets pretty much lost), I still highly recommend ANY song from this same 1963 set, which was part of a Swedish TV show. The whole thing is a blast - you really should try and watch the whole set, if you can. The background is that although Beatlemania had already swept the UK, and they had a keen following in Hamburg, Germany, they were otherwise still virtually unknown to the rest of the world. That meant they were still hungry for success and putting in 100% to each performance (later that success became overwhelming and an obstacle to further growth as a live act, since they couldn't be heard above the screams, prompting a retreat to the studio and a whole new phase of creative development). So, here, you can not only hear them well, but you can observe the engagement of the audience build throughout the set, with two successive extensions to their set, ending in a peak of excitement with Paul's cover of Little Richard's Long Tall Sally/ Have Some Fun Tonight. And how nice it is to see them able to be so up close with the audience, something that would become impossible within a few short months, anywhere in the world. You're so right about the energy and joy they radiated; that 'magic in a bottle' as you put it...no other band came close. I can assure you boys loved them as well as girls. It was said every girl wanted to date a Beatle, while every boy wanted to *be* one. They opened the door to all the new bands and musical styles that followed. I do believe they were a special gift from heaven, whatever some disapproving Christians might say about them! This planet, while far from being fully healed/ perfected, IMO really is a better place for their presence and enduring influence - kinder, more tolerant, more alive and open to new possibilities, more honest. You might have had to be there to witness the shift, but it was tangible, and a thing of joy to be a part of.

Hi Michael! You were right about the disrespect of the second band, but this was live TV back in 63 when tape was really expensive and changeovers happened live in front of your eyes. But play the tape on, the crowd didn't want The Beatles to leave so they played an impromptu encore of Long Tall Sally which has even more energy. The drummer is known as Ringo or Ringo Starr. His real name is Richard Starke, but very early in his career, he adopted Ringo Starr as a stage name. I think it was because a former band he was in would feature him periodically in a presentation called "Starr Time" or something like that. All of the Beatles grew up in Liverpool, England, but Ringo grew up in the poorest section. He was the last member of the Beatles to join in 1962, replacing original drummer Pete Best.

Yes, I agree. Look for another video of this song where there mikes aren't off like they were on this performance. John's Mike was too hot, so his harmony vocal ended up sounding like the lead vocal instead of the great harmony they always have. This was a terrible mix. Made the instruments sound off, too. If you listen to the record you will find that they sounded equally as great live! Just couldn't tell on this one because the film mix was so off. It's great, thiugh, that they grabbed you in spite of all that! Yep, pure joy! Also, as you check out their records from the beginning right up to the end you will see the natural and gradual progression and change of not only their appearance but also their music and song writing. They were growing up and maturing right before the eyes of the world so it makes sense. The suits were a genuine thing. It was a fresh and deliberate change from the Elvis-inspired leather jackets that were all the rage with all the guys at that time. Their brilliant manager, Brian Epstein, was responsible for that. All of us girls, back in the day, LOVED seeing their great looking guys, dressed so prim and proper, letting loose and getting crazy! Moptops! Anyway, their growth and progression as musicians and people is what kept the world enthralled and ended up affecting an entire generation and culture. Glad you caught it!!! Girls liked 'em because they were cute and sang love songs, boys liked 'em because they were cool and played their own instruments. At least that's the impression that I got about Beatlemania. I wish I'd been there! I think the best thing about them was that they grew up with and evolved alongside their fanbase. SO MUCH changed from 1963 to 1970, I don't think people today realize that. And with the Beatles, you see and hear those changes every step of the way. In any case, it's really a shame that film footage of the early Beatles is so bad and you really have to get the more "experienced" fans to point you in the right direction. The Ed Sullivan show clips are generally the best of the bunch. Try Please Please Me!

They made it okay for men to grow hair past their ears, which became the norm all the way until the early 80s. Note the hair length of the band behind them, which was normal for the entire preceding 6 decades.

Obviously this is live & the audio isn't that good & Johns backing vocal is a bit over-powering but you get the gist of their popularity. The studio version was remastered in 2023 & is worth a listen.

The audio on this does not do it justice, they were playing much better than what you could hear.

Your enthusiasm is terrific, but you still don’t understand the difference between The Beatles (with James Paul McCartney, June 18, 1942 - September 11th, 1966) and The Cheatles (with William Wallace Shepherd, starting with “Sgt. Pepper’s…” in 1967. The first band featured 4 Beatles, while the second band featured 3 Beatles + 1 Cheatle. 🔭🔬🍸
