Another wonderful song by them is "Hair." Absolute classic that came out when men started wearing their hair longer in the wake of The Beatles. It's a must-listen!

Besides the harp, the lyrics could be considered psychedelic too. His encounter with the flower girl could have been a supernatural entity.

It is my understanding that this group was the inspiration for The Partridge Family sitcom series and musical group. 🎶🎧🎶 Nice song request & enjoyable reaction.✨💛✨ I remember this from my childhood. In 67 I was 9.

It's not just an understanding John, it's a fact! The Cowsill family was actually ask to do the show but the producers said that their mom would not "play" the mother so they said NO!

Vicky Peterson of The Bangles married John Cowsill. The Bangles started out as part of the paisley scene in Los Angeles, so that was part of the psychedelic pop scene as well. I think The Rain, The Park, and Other Things by The Cowsills is a bit of a masterpiece.

Psychedelic pop, yeah I didn’t think that at first, but when Ihear it again, yeah, I can see it branded that way too.

Remember, this was in the Hippie days, and the "Flower Children" of San Francisco and Height/Ashbury. This song is a microcosm of that late 60s era.

Super fantastic, Just: You're hitting some good ones. Hearing this again reminds me of the easy, innocent days we baby boomers lived although it may not have been that for our parents. This song is beautiful and such a contrast to their other big hit, Hair. Although I wasn't crazy about Hair when it first came out, it tugs at my heart strings now because of the nostalgia associated with it. The Rain, The Park & Other Things is one of my favourite songs of the 60s.

I didn't realize it at the time but the Cowsills also sang the theme for the early 70s TV show "Love American Style".

This wasn't one of their psychedelic songs, it was "bubblegum pop"; their song Hair would be closer to psychedelic. The Cowsills popularity was from their abilities in Harmonizing and a lot of vocalizations that they did. Psychedelic music was formed in the 60's and came in many forms (similar to the formation of Punk music). No one considered The Monkees psychedelic either, but they did have a few good psychedelic songs on the "B" side of their albums, but their contract holders didn't want them doing it.

"Bubblegum pop" to me was more groups like the 1910 Fruitgum Company ("Simon Says"), The Ohio Express ("Yummy Yummy Yummy") and the Archies ("Sugar Sugar"), where the songs were really aimed at pre-teens. I would say the psychedelic aspect here has more to do with the lyrics (the flower girl references the whole "flower power" hippie thing, and the singer doesn't know if she's real or not), but the arrangement does create a slightly surreal effect with the organ and the harp. The lush vocal harmonies are similar to the type of thing groups like the Association, the Turtles and Strawberry Alarm Clock (remember them?!) were doing around the same time. The Beach Boys were apparently big fans of the Cowsills' singing. This came out in fall of '67 and was sort of a musical last gasp for the Summer Of Love. In terms of subject matter it's actually not that far off from the milieu of the show "Hair", but much less provocative and challenging in nature.

The Cowsills were great back in the day & are STILL great! They put out a new CD in late 2022. It's certainly different from their early music, but that's to be expected! We're all more than 50 years older! I saw them in 1969 & I will never forget it! Sadly, they are now missing some voices, but their harmonies are still wonderful. Unfortunately their stardom didn't last as long as it should have, but that's a story you should check out on your own. I hope you take time to hear more of their music.

Nice! The harp and the harmonies supposedly make it psychedelic. The Cowsills "family band" story was reconfigured for television as a show called The Partridge Family in the early seventies. It starred Oscar winning actress Shirley Jones as the mother of a band of singing teenagers. She would cart them to shows in a school bus painted in the style of Piet Mondrian.

thanks for sharing your reaction...I was just about 8 when this came out - same age as Susan - the little sister. This song has stuck with me since then. It has all the elements I appreciate in a song - harmony, catching phrasing and poppy beat! Check out the documentary about the band - kind of a tough go for the family. It's called Family Band - it's on Amazon I believe. Cheers!

I remember the Cowsills being in the teenybopper magazines. Also John Cowsill went to my school. He only came to our history class. He never talked to anyone. Just sat down in the back and fell asleep. We assumed he was strung out. They did a version of "Hair" from the '60s musical of the same name.
