The Cure defies being categorized as one style. They were first called post-punk in '78, goth in the early 80s, new wave mid-80s, alternative 89 to present. Robert Smith's voice is so unique that whether the song is dark and gloomy or poppy like this one, you instantly know it's a Cure song.
This was my favorite band when I was a teen, I can teach a class about the Cure. The Mixed Up CD was the soundtrack of my moody teen years 😊. You chose their happiest song.
This song was a departure from their regular gloom/emo/goth vibe. Robert Smith has said previously he wanted to try and write a "pop" song and this is what he came up with. It turned out to be a big hit, the guy is really talented. Never a huge fan of the Cure but they have some good songs- check out Close to Me
Glad you reacted to The Cure. Other songs from them you should check up are: *Boys Don't Cry* _(1979),_ *The Caterpillar* _(1984),_ *Inbetween Days* _(1985),_ *Close to Me* _(1985),_ *Just Like Heaven* _(1987)._
Yes, you are correct. The lyrics are repetitive, but that’s not the point. This is a feel-good-drive-with-the-car-top-down kind of song. There’s no great message here, just a good Catch Phrase that doesn’t want you to worry about what it’s saying. Just how much fun are you having and you get to shout “Friday I’m in Love”!
Dude just listen to their whole Disintergration Album…that album pretty much describes them sonically on a nutshell. They’re from the post punk new wave genre.
