There is a reason why we old peeps miss the 70's an 80's so much...

They called it Frankenstein because it was originally a lot longer and they had to cut some pieces out and piece it back together so Frankenstein fit the title very well

Edgar invented that thing.. He was the first to ever use a strapped keyboard.. He said he was tired of just standing in one place while on the keyboard so he thought it would be cool to be able to hang it around your neck and have the ability to walk around and play, so that's what he did.. BTW, that's Rick Derringer on the guitar and Dan Hartman thumpin' a mean bassline.. 🙂

Edgar also plays guitar AND his voice is an instrument too. Edgar and Johnny Winter, the brothers with albinism, weren’t able to spend time out in the sun. They spent a lot of their time composing music and playing instruments. As many have suggested, the live version of Tobacco Road featuring Johnny and Edgar will blow you away. There’s not a song on the “They Only Come Out at Night” album that isn’t good. It’s the first rock album I bought as a teenager.

This song "Frankenstein" came out in "73" "IT'S ALIVE, AND WILL LIVE FOREVER!!! Edgar Winter is the Pioneer of the Keyboard/Synthesizer around the neck, and became affectionally known as the "Keytar! Edgar and his brother Johnny (Who unfortunately has passed) were musical geniuses! And yes, Edgar does play more instruments.

Yes, absolutely follow this up with "Free Ride". I would recommend the studio version off of "They Only Come Out At Night" so you can experience the true production quality of Edgar's music in addition to his superior playing ability.

Edgar and his brother, Johnny were albinos growing up in West Texas. The sun hurt their eyes too bad to play outside so they stayed inside and mastered music. Johnny mastered the guitar and Edgar mastered everything else. You need to hear Edgar sing so Tobacco Road is the next logical choice for you. It also features Johnny on guitar. Johnny is no longer with us but Edgar is still going strong. Fantastic reaction. I love the shock when people watch this done live!

I am always amazed at the younger generations reaction to how musically talented my generation was.

WOW - What an introduction to Edgar. Most find Frankenstein after hearing their more conventional tracks. You took the bull by the horns on this one. Back then, everyone was experimenting with sound. They were trying to find how to generate a sound, tweak it, alter it, creating anything new. I know of artists who slashed speaker cones and blew up amplifiers just to get a unique sound. Today we can digitally alter anything in any way and the creativity needed to get rolling thunder out of a keyboard and amp is no longer a mystery. THIS is true artistry and it is something that we've lost over the years.

Mind blown, Circuits fried and Face melted, what more could you ask for in a song? I have listened to this on the radio for 30 years, before I finally got to see it being played. Watching you experience the sensory overload is priceless. Now you have to see Hocus Pocus by Focus and NOT the "Midnight Special" version.

That's also Dan Hartman on bass (RIP). He had a couple of hit singles in the '80s with the main one being I Can Dream About You that reached #6 on the billboard chart in '84.

This song doesn't need vocals. The instruments communicate quite well on their own. :)

If someone already mentioned this then my apologies. The name of the song came about on how it was recorded. The band spent the day in the studio just jamming and seeing what might happen. After the session, I believe Edgar took the studio tapes and cut out the parts he liked. He then put them together in a cohesive song. Btw, the band had to go back into the studio to learn how to play the song. It was stich together like Frankenstein's monster, hence the name.

The first time I heard this on the radio, the shorter single version, on the radio about 50 years ago. I went out and bought the album "They Only Come Out at Night" and heard the full version which this is. 13 year old me loved this! "Free Ride" and "Hanging Around" are also great ones. Edgar was the first to put a strap on a keyboard to play it. Edgar has toured with Ringo Starr's All Star Band too. Oh the guy in white playing guitar is Rick Derringer. I saw him open for Heart back in 1977. His big hit was "Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo" and in the sixties he was in a band called the McCoy's and had a hit with "Hang on Sloopy".

I ‘m excited that after 2+ years of rescheduling (Covid) we’re finally getting to see Ringo Starr and his All Star Band tomorrow night. Edgar Winter will be there.

Highly recommend Tobacco Road with his brother Johnny. Also, being an albino is why he "Only Comes Out at Night". Edgar is a true genius. Johnny (RIP) was a true guitar, blues virtuoso.

Edgar Winter is a multi talented man. He had the great Rick Derringer on lead guitar.

Back in the 80's, was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to light an Edgar Winter show. At the theatre I was lighting director at had a music series. This show was Edgar Winter with Leon Russell. One amazing show. Got to see Edgar perform "Frankenstein" live along with all his other great music. At the end, both Edgar and Leon performed together. What a fun night!!!

Rick Derringer on guitar had a solo career and a hit song, "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo". Bassist Dan Hartman also had a solo career and a big hit, "I Can Dream About You". Masses of talent in this band, wich they'd been together longer, but the group was more of a project than a group. Edgar is in his seventies and still playing gigs.

This live version of this song is a total experience. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Edgar Winter is very talented & plays many instruments including keyboards, saxophone & timbales. The title "Frankenstein" refers he fact that the original recording of the song was much longer than the final version & it required numerous edits to shorten it. So they spliced together many different parts.

When I saw the title, my first thought was "please be the Old Grey Whistle Test version" and noticed the star field and went yasss! Probably in my top 5 OGWT performances. For the uninitiated The Old Grey Whistle Test was the antithesis to the BBC's flagship music prog Top of the Pops which had all the chart stuff. OGWT would showcase the more album based or obscure bands that didn't reach the UK charts and give them the time to play longer tracks and experiment. It was always a mixed bag so one week It'd be Dutch prog madmen Focus, the next Bob Marley and the Wailers, the next Captain Beefheart and the following week Joan Armatrading

We introduced this song to a campground one night in 1975. Back before boomboxes I built a modestly powered system with an 8track and large highly efficient home speakers. Powered by lots of D cell batteries. Just occurred to me 50 years, it was an audio Frankenstein!

Saw Edgar Winter in Dallas in '78. It was an incredible night of music I have never forgotten. The list of guests was amazing.steve Lukather, Eric Burdon, Timothy Schmitt, Hughie Thomasson and The Steve Miller band was the opening act. At the end of the night everyone came onstage for an encore of The House of the Rising Sun. I think my jaw sat against my chest the entire show.

Yep, the keyboard guitar strap was a thing back in the 70's. Another artist who also used to use it, was the "Dream Weaver" himself, Gary Wright. I think keyboardist Billy Preston even used it a time or two. I heard, in an interview that Winter gave (BTW, his name is "Edgar Winter" not "Winters" as some people say it), where he said they decided to call the tune "Frankenstein" because it was pieced together with parts from all sorts of different instruments, like the monster! This came out when I was in high school. More than 50 years ago. Still just as much of a rocker today as back then. I just smiled when your jaw dropped in the first minute of the song. I knew you were about to be blown away.

Mind blown! I saw them in concert in 1973. I was 17. I love watching young kids finding our music and digging it! At least it rendered you speechless!

The instrumentation in Frankenstein is infused together like Frankenstein's monster. I think it was Edgar Winter who was the first to strap a keyboard like a guitar into a keytar. If I recall due to Edgar and his brother Johnny both being albinos, the condition caused several vision defects and very high sensitivity to light and sun exposure. While their young school age friends were playing outdoors the brother's albinism forced them to stay indoors. So their focus became playing and experimenting with an assortment of musical instruments

"They Only Come Out At Night" was the first album I ever bought, and it was for this song specifically. That was 50 years ago, and I _STILL_ have the album (vinyl). It remains one my all time favorite (if not _THE_ all time favorite) songs. I've seen several reactions to this video, and _NONE_ of them mention how insanely good that bass player is. He _KILLS_ it. I guess everyone is so impressed by Edgar's multi-tasking, that it gets lost in the shuffle, but he plays like I wish I could play....not that I forgot about the drummer, who is also insane. The guitarist isn't really doing anything special, but he keeps the rhythm going when Edgar's playing the sax & drums. The whole thing is just masterful. Rumor has it Edgar was operating the camera and working the concession stand, too.😉

This is Edgar Winter, brother of famous Blues guitarist Johnny Winter. They are (were) from Texas. They were both born "Albino" and as most know, they can't be in the sun for more than a few minutes, because of their condition. These extraordinarily talented brothers, each do not just play, but excel at multiple instruments. Brother Johnny was known worldwide to Rockers and Blues fans, as one of the top 3 or 4 guitarists of any genre, not just Blues or Rock. He and the great Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton were most often mentioned in the same breath, as the greatest ever. Yes, Edgar played all those instruments, and played them amazingly. That's not a piano, but a keyboard. Edgar pioneered the playing of a keyboard hanging with a strap. But not shown in this video, Edgar is also a master at the organ, the piano, the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar, and the bass guitar, AND he's an amazing singer and he can scat (watch him in "Tobacco Road"). One of the most talented musicians, ever!

The 1960s and 1970s had some terrific instrumentals - many that were hits! This song stole my heart with just the 4-minute version that was released on AM radio stations back when it first came out. To watch this live version though, makes me love it more!

Edgar wanted to dance around with the guitarist and bass player so he "invented" the keyboard strap. One of the more talented musicians ( Prince also comes to mind ) playing multiple instruments exceptionally well.

Back in the day Frankenstein was played on FM and sometimes AM radio and the whole point of the song is imagining Frankenstein. And it worked. You could imagine Frankenstein with all his electrodes and all. It was very cool

Rick Derringer (a classic rock guitarist) on guitar, the late Dan Hartman on bass guitar (who had his own pop single hit with "I Can Dream About You" and a disco hit with "Instant Replay"), and the late Chuck Ruff on drums. Edgar and Dan H. shared lead vocals duties on their breakthrough album "They Only Come Out at Night" (Dan is the angelic tenor voice on "Free Ride" and "Autumn", two of my favorites on the album.

When Edgar was in High School, if anyone in band class was having trouble with their part, the teacher told him to go help them learn it. So, he can literally play any instrument. Edgar was the first person to put a guitar strap on a keyboard. This used to be an about 27 minute song they would do in the middle of their concerts. When they were recording their "They Only Come Out At Night" album, they needed one more song to fill it out, and recorded the full version of this on the 2" magnetic tape. At that time, the song was called, "Dual Drum Duel." or something similar. That wasn't going to work timewise, so, Edgar and Rick Derringer (producer and guitarist) started through the master tape, splicing out chunks of the song, which got it down to about 18 minutes. That was still too long, so they spliced out more chunks of the song, then more until it finally got down to the song that is on the album. As a result, there is no copy anywhere of the original song anywhere. I, for one, wish they had made a backup before chopping up the master. Then, the story goes that someone in the studio looked down at the tape, and saw all the white splicing tape and said, "You really Frankensteined that one." So, the song didn't have anything to do with the monster, became the song that everyone played every Halloween. Enjoy your journey into Edgar and his brother Johnny, and Rick Derringer. This 67 year old rocker just sub'd. Was privileged to see Edger and his brother Johnny in concert in late 70s. The guitarist is Rick Derringer, just a kid at the time, who had already placed a number one hit with his band The McCoy's called Hang on Sloopy prior to joining Edgers group. Rick was also affiliated with Steely Dan and playd guitar in a few of their earlier tracks. Currently, Rick still tours and also involved with Ringo Starrs, All Star Band. Thanks for your reaction. What Edgar was playing was the ARP 2600 synth. They had a bunch of jams that fit nowhere so they decided to piece it all together and the drummer said it's like Frankenstein, piecing body parts together and the name stuck.

Edgar does play piano, but here he is playing an early analog synthesizer. It's monophonic, meaning it is only capable of passing off/sounding out one note at a time (no chords or triads). The keyboard unit (around is neck) is the controller. The massive unit behind him with all the knobs and sliders houses the actual sound generating components, and from there the sound output gets sent to an amplifier.

Edgar Winter had a band called White Trash before he recorded this with The Edgar Winter Group. The White Trash album is a must must hear. They were a funky blues rock brass band, with guitar-god Rick Derringer, that made incredible music. Check out Give It Everything You've Got, Keep Playing That Rock n Roll, I've Got News for You, Let's Get It On, Good Morning Music.... I could go on and on. The whole album is EPIC. Great reaction!

I heard the studio version of this in 1973 at 5 years old, bought it as my first album I ever purchased in 1979, and finally went to see my musical hero, Edgar, in the mid-1990's. I've been accused at being the world's biggest Edgar Winter fan. lol

He’s in some pretty good company … Dan Hartman on bass who also wrote most the material on the albums, chuck ruff on drums and on the original radio version was Ronnie montrose on guitar

You are absolutely right. The Edgar Winters group is the DaVinci of rock! I'm a child of the 60's and this was definitely one of my favorite rock groups.

The main riff is based on the opening vocal motif of the song “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard.

In the 70's we had the Zeppelin, heart who and so many bands out in front. But right behind them were Tull and both Johnny and Edgar winter and a multitude of other bands (too many to list here), that had tremendous talent. Playing so many different instruments and experimenting pushing the boundaries of rock. Just a great era.

One of the first albums I ever owned was They Only Come Out at Night. Sorta. I was 12 and stole my brother's copy. Literally wore the grooves out. Edgar Winter is simply, a genius. What amazes me on this version is how utterly freaking TIGHT that band was. RIP Dan and Chuck.

His voice is his greatest instrument. He is one of the of greatest rock singers of all time. Listen to Edgar Winter and the White Trash live version of Tobacco Road from the album Road Work. What he can do with his voice is truly amazing. You will witness the longest sustained scream, with vibrato, ever recorded. That song will blow you away even more than Frankenstein.

Edger was the first to strap a synth keyboard, a heavy one at that, those were built like a tank In those days. The song was originally called two drum battle or something close to that. When it was recorded at a studio, the editing was to literally cut and splice it together, tape was everywhere, one of the band member said it looks like Frankenstein, Edgar said that’s it.

Best instrumental I have ever heard. My first time hearing that cut was 1982 in my friends basement on his record player. It was one of those all in one kind that where so big they were built into a huge cabinet some of those old things also had a black&white television screen in them. Anyone here Remember those? My friend put that album on and we started shooting pool. Yes his parent had a pool table in the basement as well. They referred to it as a rec room. Also had a bar. ( we were way to young to drink and his parents kept that stuff locked up. We drank kool-aid 🤪.
