We who grew up in the 60/70s were blessed! We had Monkees, Partridge Family, Jackson 5; all these bands linked to children's TV shows. Shoot, I think Scooby-doo even had a band. But yeah, the Monkees, every day after school. "Only Shades of Grey" is one of their underrated songs imo.

No, they weren't real musicians. Most of what they did was faked. There albums were primarily studio musicians. Look at Peter Tork on the guitar. As a guitar player myself it's clear he's not actually playing it.

They were real musicians, and they toured as real musicians, not sure why you feel the need to invent things about them because they used studio musicians. OK let's get this straight. Mickey Dolenz and David Jones had acting backgrounds but could both sing. David was a capable drummer but producers kept him out front because of his (lack of) height. Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith were both talented musicians. At the beginning, most of the music was written by hired songwriters and the recording sessions mostly used professionals, but Nesmith was vocal from the beginning about this, saying the band should participate in recording their own music. That began with their 3rd album (which reached #1 on Billboard), but it should be noted that both Nesmith and Tork had songwriting credits on the first two albums. Nesmith wrote "Different Drum" in 1964. A cut of it was included in the TV show but the music supervisor wouldn't record it. Nesmith presented it to Linda Ronstadt and it was the song that first made her famous. You spotted that Peter was not playing the guitar in this video? Like most every music video produced in history, this is not a candid tape of an actual studio recording session. The reason he was a Monkee is because Stephen Stills had auditioned and was rejected, and recommended his friend Peter Tork to the producers.

The Monkees have a lot of catchy pop tunes. I don't recall hearing this one. I was a preteen when the Monkees were popular. Their TV show was silly, but it fit the times. I believe only one of the members is still alive. Despite all of the political turmoil occurring in America in the 60's, kids still were surrounded by loving parents and experienced a very innocent upbringing. Us kids lived to "go outside". As soon as we got home from school, it was -- grab a sandwich or some cookies and milk, gobble it down, then take off out the door to meet your friends. In the summer, our parents didn't see us again after breakfast [ and maybe a few cartoons ] until lunch [ maybe ], and then not again until supper time. And then not again until curfew. And down south in N'awlins where I was born and raised, when we entered the house after playing OUTSIDE for a few hours, we were soaked with sweat. The humidity was consistently high. TV wasn't as big a deal to kids in the 60's and 70's. Sure -- there were some shows we liked growing up, but in our preteen days, it was all about playing football or basketball, jailbreak, kick the can, etc. The Monkees TV show came on early Saturday. I would watch it occasionally, as well as Scooby-Doo and other cartoons. But usually my friends and I were gathered together OUTSIDE by 10 or 11am, deciding how we were going to spend our day.

"Last Train to Clarksville", "I'm a Believer", "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You", "Valleri", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer" etc. Davy Jones was considered a teenage heart throb. Sadly he died in 2012 & later Peter Tork in 2019. Michael Nesmith also passed away recently. Only 1 member is remaining now Micky Dolenz.

My first time watching Asia & BJ - because it was a Monkees tune, but enjoyed so much I subscribed. I hear two messages in this song and had never sensed it was his words he was talking about but “hers” - that she played him and lied to him and now she’s walking out the door, but he’s still so stuck on her that he somehow wants it all to work out - even though it obviously can’t and she couldn’t care less. I could be wrong but thought I’d offer this perspective.

He’s saying that she’s a liar. She said all these wonderful “Words” to him just to get what she wanted, just so she could use him and he meant nothing to her. So he keeps hearing her sweet “words” in his head and now knows they were all lies. I think what you’re saying Asia is that their music sounds so alive compared to today’s music. Great reaction. However, in the song, SHE is the one saying "those words with lies inside." He (the narrator) is the one who's been hurt ("fallin' love, girl, with you is just like dyin'"). It is easy, though, to miss that the words came from her. That detail only comes up in a line at the beginning of the song, right before her chorus. It is "I can still you sayin' those words that never were true / spoken to help nobody but you." In defense of men, this song is a reminder that problems in a romantic relationship aren't always caused by men. That said, listening to the lyric, I have no idea why this guy wants to stay in a relationship with this woman. He should just let her walk. So, maybe he has issues of his own! 😀

I watched them back when they were a prime time show. Peter, Mike and Micky were musicians when hired. Davy did sing and act. Not until their third album did they sing and play their own instruments. Mike was the only one who wrote songs, most other songs were penned by others like Carole King, Neil Diamond, etc. The Monkees were musicians, not fake, Mike did contribute to songwriting along with many of the talented musicians and songwriters of their day. Jimmy Hendrix actually toured with them as the leading band in their concerts. He threw down his guitar stormed off the stage and quit because the whole time he was on the crowd drowned him out screaming,"WE WANT THE MONKEES! WE LOVE DAVYY! " Most fans were 12 to 16 and had no idea who he was. Micky had heard him and was astounded at his music. He was the one who recommended Hendrix for the tour.

According to Wikipedia, this version of Words was produced by the songwriters Boyce & Hart, recorded in August of 1966, and featured on the TV episode on 4/10/67, Monkees, Manhattan Style, but not released on an album. The song was subsequently re-recorded for the B side of Pleasant Valley Sunday single in the summer of 1967 by new producer Chip Douglas. I believe this may have been the only tv segment in which the band plays their preferred instruments: Davy Jones miming the studio musicians on drums (and liking those chimes) switching places with Mickey Dolenz who is singing lead up front. The TV producers generally didn’t want Jones, who was short, hidden in the rear of the set on the drums. Dolenz volunteered to be the drummer even though he had no experience. Peter Tork is miming lead guitar rather than bass switching places with Michael Nesmith. The Monkees were not allowed to perform on instruments in the studio until their third album, Headquarters was released in May 1967.

I'm not sure about that - this version (a remix of the first, 1966, attempt at the song) benefits from the bits of psychedelic-style guitar and flute low in the mix. Also, to my ears, Peter's vocal parts are more in-tune on this one.

@Grithron2 Personally, it seems really obvious to me why they re-recorded this song. But yes, Peter's vocal is so much more in tune on this version, I bet he hated not getting a good vocal take on the official version. An old friend of mine co-wrote and played on one of the great songs on this album, The Door Into Summer, and he talked about the rushed nature of their sessions in those days. So sometimes you just went with what you had. Cheers!
