I loved The Monkees!! Watched their TV show and went to a concert of theirs. Have all of the Albums and this song was on "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.". Great reaction, love it. The drummer, Mickey Dolenz, is the only one still with us. Sadly the other three have passed on, RIP - Mike, Davy and Peter.

When this was picked up by The Monkees Harry Nilsson was working at a bank to earn a living. He was only making $50 a week from his publishers in those days. When Harry was told the Monkees had chosen the song his manager said to Harry, “You can quit your bank job!” The first of many fabulous songs from Harry. ❤

Singer Davy Jones did London and Broadway stage musicals before becoming a Monkee, and has a chance to show it here.

Yep. And, i read somewhere, between the pilot for "The Monkees" and filming the first episode, he went back to England and {in his other career as an amateur jockey} rode two winners... He was the original "Artful Dodger" in the stage version of "Oliver!"

Away we go. A trip back to the Monkees. I never realized at the time that Harry Nilsson wrote this tune but I now hear the heavy influence of his style. I remember this was on the Monkees show during a vaudeville performance they were doing. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Daniel for great memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

The lyrics are pretty interesting. He is comforting a gal who is feeling guilty for a one night stand. Or worse, if she was choo choo train. The sale of this song really boosted Harry's career, and he became lifelong friends with Micky Dolenz.

Davy Jones was on Broadway and nominated for the part of The Artful Dodger for the musical Oliver before he was picked for The Monkees. He actually performed the part on The Ed Sullivan Show the first night The Beatles appeared on it. He sang and danced in the musical Oliver as well.

In the Harry Nilsson documentary, someone said that Harry went and presented the song to the Monkees, who immediately said they wanted to do it. When he left, his agent said, "You can quit your job now." Harry does a version of this on an album as well. It's a VERY Harry song to me. He and Micky Dolenz became good friends.

This is from the TV show. They usually did two songs on the show, one where they were running around acting silly and then one that was more produced.

Yes, very Beatlesque, as was the original intention behind the Monkees. This is obviously an extended mix that some fan put together, looping the verse and chorus to play again. But, great song and great piano by Peter Tork.

Mickey wrote "Randy Scouse Git" after a trip to England, where he hung with the Beatles. The BBC refused to use that title on the air - it translates to USAian as " A horny bastard from Liverpool", more or less - so they gavit one - on the album track list it's listed as "Randy Scouse Git [Alternative Title]"...

The companion piece to this is "Daddy's Song," composed by Harry Nilsson and performed by the Monkees in their 1968 movie Head, with a scene of Davy Jones dancing with Toni Basil.

It's actually a cover of a Harry Nilsson song. My mom loved this when they performed it on their TV show. The woman dancing with Davy Jones is Anita Mann, who is a very famous choreographer and producer. She had nothing but glowing things to say about Davy.

Actually, i THINK the Monkees version was slightly BEFORE the Nilsson version, which would, technically, make Nilsson's version of his own song a cover...

The was originally about a woman being bang ganged. A story from the paper. The Monkees definitely cuted it up.
@maryshaffer776
@maryshaffer776 Год назад
I don't think so. There is just one girl and.one guy in the song lyrics. All I hear is the story of a cad who is only looking for a brief fling and doesn't want emotional attachment since he is going to go on with other girls. This girl in the song is someone the guy already knows because he tells her that he never said he would know no others and that she must have dreamed that in her sleep.

"Almost like one of their TV shows" - i think this version was one of the ones they would run sometimes after the main episode. I am amazed this got past the network - they must not have listened to the lyrics very closely... ...and they apparently didn't pay attention to Mickey simulating masturbation on his cane... The girl dancing with Davy {and flashing her panties at least twice in the full version - another thing i wonder if the suits noticed} is actually the choreographer - and i can't remember her name, dammit. {Speaking of choreographers and the Monkees - in their Very Odd 1968 movie, "HEAD", again Davy dances with the choreographer - to a Nillson song, actually - and she's Toni Basil ... who played a cheerleader in her video for "Hey Mickey" - fourteen years later.}

When you said Harry Nilsson, I screamed. At the time that this song came out, "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" was a big hit, and I thought, at the time, that this song sounded a lot like the theme song for that. Now I know why. Thanks for posting this, but please; if you're going to interrupt the song, give some warning. For a listener, it's jarring to have the flow interrupted that way.

End of the song has an echo effect on the last note that was cut off. The song was a hit in England but was not released as a single in the States. FYI, the video setting was a Vaudeville type act with Davey trying to do a soft shoe dance failing miserably. Note Davey does the same upper body "shuffle" in Daydream Believer to better effect.
