That and and their hot version of "Shabby Little Hut" were great songs... but they killed their career by releasing "Romeo" sound-alikes on the same subject "Just Like Columbus Did" and "Like Adam & Eve".

Ed Wingate, owner of the newly formed Detroit-based Golden World Records, had signed the Reflections on the basis of the group's regional success with the single "You Said Goodbye" on the local Kay-Ko label. Songwriter Freddie Gorman, who had been recruited by Golden World from Motown, would recall that he considered his recent composition "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" as "tailor made" for the doo-wop-styled Reflections "because it had a pop feel, as opposed to the R&B thing they were doing." However Reflections' lead singer Tony Micale recalls that none of the group responded positively to the song when Gorman first sang it for them: "It just didn't sound like much with [Gorman] just playing a little piano backup". The Reflections recorded the vocal for the track several weeks later at the RCA recording studio in Chicago. According to Micale, the group's members still regarded the song as somewhat of a joke. While running through the song prior to the recording session they ad-libbed a falsetto "doo-doo-doot" hook line as irreverent mimicry of Gorman's vocal style when he had pitched them the song. The group was surprised when Gorman added that line to the song's vocal arrangement. The instrumental track for "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" had been recorded at United Sound Systems in Detroit. Micale would recall that when the group's members first heard that instrumental track through the [RCA] studio monitors "we were just blown away... Some of the Motown [session musicians] were playing on it, and the sound was just amazing. Besides our vocals, the only thing added at that point were [the] 'doo-doo-doot's that we had come up with, and hand claps". (Wikipedia)

The ultimate feel good oldie!! This sounded great coming out of a radio station jingle and blasting out of an AM car radio! Mid 60's Doo-Wop. Things were changing in 1964. The Beatles and British acts were taking the world by storm. In the middle of all that, this song was a bit of a throw back. BTW, the backing musicians are the Funk Brothers, who were the Motown house band. They were moonlighting, which they often did because, according to them, Berry Gordy wasn't paying them very well. The Reflections are also a Detroit group.

Yep, this is indeed doo-wop, and what a great song ! .. The first version I heard of it was the hit cover by Australian pop / rock band Mental As Anything in 1980 .. Loved it, but then found the original and it's definitely the best .. A classic for sure ! .. BTW - Cool dancing there, BJ 😄

@@jazzysam9590 Disagree .. There's definitely doo-wop styling in those backing vocals / harmonies.

The Relections were a “blue eyed “ doo wop group but this song written and produced by a man who was heavily into doo wop. This song has always been classified as pop. I was a teen when this song came out and I never heard the radio DJ’s or anyone classify it as anything but pop. But we can agree to disagree. No one but the people who were instrumental in producing it would know how to rightly classify it.

Just Like Romeo & Juliet About Artist: The Reflections Released: 1964 Album: Presenting The Reflections Genre: Doo-Wop love this kind of music, back when I was a kid the Shell gas station was selling this box set of 50 and 60s rock. Each week if you filled up at Shell you could buy a cassette tape of 10 or so songs from the 50s and 60s and it came with a free plastic case to hold all the cassettes in, as you filled it up each week. We had all of the tapes and I listened to them all the time. I think you can even find it online to buy now, I wonder if I could just find a list of all the songs on it. Most of them would probably be good to do.

This is Doo Wop, I grew up watching these guys around Metro Detroit as “The Laredo’s” at local fairs and car shows during the 80’s and early 90’s. And my father worked with one of the guys Bernie, and that’s how I learned of the group that started before I was born. Damn they put on a fantastic show.

Hey, guys: It's so nice watching you get into the early music of the 60s. I think anyone being honest with themselves would have to admit that the 60s decade was musically awesome. Here is a song that was not a hit for this group; it was a cover of The Rascals song, I've Been Lonely Too Long. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LIT8inPP8nk.html I love both versions but in my opinion, The Brooklyn Bridge one is far superior. Only a very small fraction of the 60s music was bubblegum and closer to the end of the decade, I think.
